Newly obtained video shows driver after deadly Goodyear cycling crash
  • 90% of these I see involve a pickup.

Maybe the driver should be forced to drive compact vehicles for several years.

That said it does seem like it could be a texting and driving situation which would warrant more punishment.

I'm usually against technology lock outs but I do long for cars to be able to limit phone functionality while driving.

  • American Christianity
  • Oh, that's a nice tidbit to remember whenever someone asks for more faith in the govt.

"Yes sounds great, let's start by making Jubilee a national holiday where we forgive student debts and delinquent loans. Just like in the scriptures"

  • Don't make a mistake in choosing a distro
  • If you want reliable updates Arch isn't the best fit IMO.

It can be perfectly reliable for sure, but it's permitted not to be.

If you really want to update and not worry about it, I would consider Fedora, they test updates and upgrades while also being very close to bleeding edge.

  • Coreboot Progress - Update on the AMD board
  • Something that frustrates me is the the bios manufacturers tend to do the minimum required.

This means that your notebook could grow older and stop getting bugfix updates.

The bios are usually tailored for Windows and thus break UEFI standards like windows.

This requires "quirks" in Linux to try to make ACPI for correctly.

Coreboot is appealing to me because it gives hope that well have properly designed firmware, and prompt bugfixes, on Laptops one day.

  • This week in KDE: Final Plasma 6.1 polishing and new features for 6.2
  • I'd argue there are two ideologies.

Gnome focuses on design and user interaction, then features.

Plasma focuses on configuration and modularity, then design.

It does seem like they are starting to converge though. With gnome focusing on more features, and Plasma focusing more on design and consistency.

  • This week in KDE: Final Plasma 6.1 polishing and new features for 6.2
  • Gnome is way more put together than Plasma 6 at this point in time. Its rock solid reliable.

I keep gnome as my stable laptop setup, and Plasma as my tinkering with games setup. This outlines both of their strengths individually.

  • Right? I wish that had more focus than HDR.

I think a big problem is TPM enforcing initramfs. Hoping ukis get wrapped up and as a result more focus is on trusted compute in general

I don't know if it's instance wide or if each instance I've interacted with has this set. However I seem unable to downvote posts and comments.

    Compat report Starfield

I don't know if this is desired, however I personally would appreciate compatibility reports for newly released games.

Since I preordered with early access I can contribute.

    System:

CPU: 7800x3d GPU: 7900xtx Nitro+ Memory: 32gb ddr5 6000mhz OS: Fedora 38 KDE (Wayland session) Runtime: Proton Experimental

Game launches flawlessly and remains stable when alt+tab'ing out of the window.

Steam overlay flickers if you open it in game but does function.

    Settings:

4k medium, VSync off, no FSR gets me mid 60's fps.

4k medium, VSync off, FSR2 Quality gets me 80fps (with dips into low 70's).

(Default) 4k medium, VSync off, FSR2 with 50% resolution scale. In this configuration I get 100-120fps.

Unfortunately, the game does not have VRR so it locks to the monitors refresh rate (manually set to 120hz in my case).

As such the game does stutter when it dips in frames so you may want to target your 1% lows or avg fps to guarantee a smooth experience.

    8/10

At medium the game does look good, although the sprites for fire could be better and have more bloom.

If they add VRR, and steadily work to optimize performance this could easily reach a 10/10.
