Employees are being offered the ‘party drug’ through company health schemes as psychedelic-assisted therapy grows in popularity. Just some good old capitalist innovation in action.
  • I really don't, I hate arguing and it stresses me out, but with comrades I take pains to try and explain why I'm arguing rather than start a shit-flinging fight. Usually I can actually get somewhere with that, not just getting back "nope I see no inconsistency between my repeated shitty, harmful framing and my later professed position on psychedelic therapy, I did absolutely nothing wrong or that could even reasonably be misinterpreted"

  • psychological problems people have that are not a result of exploitation should absolutely be treated using therapy

This sentence specifically excludes people whose conditions are a result of exploitation. A condition can be caused by exploitation and still be a health issue (and worth noting, it won't often just go away if the bad working conditions go away).

The issue [...] is using drugs to paper over problems that are a direct result of shitty working conditions.

Again, framing genuine medical treatment as "papering over" is harmful.

When you say in response to this article that "drugging people up shouldn't be used to paper over brutally exploitative working conditions that cause psychological damage." you're implying that what is being done here isn't legitimate treatment and is merely "drugging people up". Which from the article doesn't seem to be the case.

Of course I wouldn't put it past capitalists to push that sort of scheme, but you're framing it as "this is happening" not "this could be happening/would be bad if it did". What is described in the article is just bog standard, physician supervised ketamine therapy, nothing day to day, and nothing during the work day.

FWIW I don't think you necessarily intended for your comments to be taken this way, but several people have now pointed out that they took it that way to you so continuing to argue you didn't say it isn't especially helpful.

  • I get what you're saying, but you keep wording it in a way that like, implies you think health issues caused by exploitation don't still need to be treated, regardless of their origin. This stuff should be covered for anyone that needs it full stop. AND working conditions need to improve. Unless there's evidence that the medical treatment is actually improper (using much higher than therapeutic doses for example), there's no issue here really (with the covering of novel therapies, specifically)

You can say the increased need for treatment is a sign of damaging exploitative conditions and I'd agree but that isn't what the article is about

  • did they tell you what the code was exactly? I'm struggling to figure out what code would be thrown for a minor head gasket leak on a 2003 vehicle... Misfire code would have to be a pretty bad leak, and low coolant idk, seems like a 2003 wouldn't even have a sensor for that, I know cars I've owned didn't. It's possible they're bullshitting you, or that they're telling the truth but the code is unrelated.

Whatever it is, I would bet you could get the code to go away long enough to pass smog, though I'm not very familiar with CA rules. It would eventually get worse though. I would get them to give you the exact trouble codes it threw, or take it someplace else that will read them for free/cheap. Not knowing what those are really changes my answer

As far as doing it yourself: it's a big job but with enough time and tools and patience and shit you probably could. The thing that will drive up the cost/PITA factor even more though, is that if you're doing the head gasket you really should take the head to a machine shop to get milled perfectly flat again, to give it the best possible chance of lasting as long as possible. The last time I did this, I ended up having shot valves in the head that had to be replaced as well (also a suzuki coincidentally), but yours probably aren't that bad.

If you were in the rust belt I'd be telling you to consider throwing in the towel on the car, but in CA its more likely to be worth fixing, as it won't rust out from under you in the next 2-5 years lol.

But I would HEAVILY encourage you to check for yourself what the codes are, get some second opinions, and look for signs of head gasket leaks (coolant in the cylinder will cause it the exhaust to have white smoke, coolant in the oil will make it lighter and more opaque like a milkshake, and probably leave a residue on the oil cap).

Either way I don't think there's much sense in throwing it away until/unless you have to.

Oh, and in addition to the retirement program another commenter mentioned, there is also a program where the state will pay up to $1200 towards an emissions related repair. Its a bureaucratic process and unclear if your repair would qualify but it seems like it would if it caused you to fail smog. I think you'd have to take it for the smog test and have it fail before you could apply for that. link: https://www.bar.ca.gov/consumer/consumer-assistance-program/index#otheroptions

  • This post was banned from dbzer0 for being "Tankie" lmfao what a joke of a so-called piracy instance
  • emojis are actually built into base lemmy for the past year or two (contributed by a dev affiliated with hexbear, but still), but they don't federate seamlessly and most instances don't use them much, or at all, so app support also seems to be lacking last I saw.

If you're using lemmy.ml on the web not thru an app, you can still try out the emoji picker/autocomplete, it just only has standard unicode emojis. Try typing :a into the comment box or clicking on the little smiley face in the bar above the box!

  • getting progressively pissed at the android phone market
  • I can't and I won't lol

Its still a smartphone with all the baggage of that, so I'm not personally interested, but that actually seems like a pretty compelling featureset...

    • headphone jack
    • not enormous
    • rear fingerprint reader (the natural place to have it)
    • IR blaster
    • dual sim or sd card

battery is the weak point really. If they used a weaker SoC and made it just a liiiiitle bit bigger (but still thicc) the battery could probably be a lot better.

  • I mean...
  • apolitical people I guess don't think that way. They aren't in the news therefore they don't exist. I should have said as much (or brought up PSL) but I was just holding my tongue trying not to hurt feelings in the process of conveying "yikes, I would not vote for rfk". It was a family gathering of sorts so I didn't want to get too spicy and I genuinely do like this person, didn't realize they were quite that into woo about chemicals (also said aluminum is bad for you and some other stuff that I was like "is it though?")

  • I mean...
  • someone told me last night that they are tempted to vote for RFK because they can't stomach voting for biden and feel RFK is good on things like being against pesticides in food, etc. They were like "I don't like that he's anti-vax buuuut"

I was like can-excuse-2 you can excuse being anti-vax? We already have one lingering deadly pandemic and it won't be the last. And that one went/continues to go real badly, even with institutions that were not, at least on paper, anti-vax, and were, at the start at least, trying to prevent harm with their limited powers and resources.

Its not like it's going to matter regardless, why vote for someone so deeply flawed?

  • Cleared my youtube out today of channels I don't watch and videos I had liked for no reason, ended up purging like 100 plus channels and 300 liked videos.
  • I turn off watch history entirely gigachad-hd

It nags you to turn it back on and completely disables the homepage recommended/popular feed but I've grown to like it a lot. I still go through my subscriptions tab to find stuff to watch, and I still get related videos on individual videos that I watch that I can hop to if I want to explore outside that bubble of existing subscriptions. It's like going back to 2014 youtube or whenever they started making the homepage purely algorithmic
