So, I want a t-shirt to show off love to open source. I need some org to buy it from (so my money counts). I also want it to have a clear message to regular people.
  • Yeah, that's a possibility. However, as some Mastodon folks said recently, no platform is forever. Signal's prospects seem reasonable to me, right now. If they co corporate and enshittify next week, I won't feel my time and investment with them was a waste, nor my financial support (which hasn't been much, tbh).

  • TIL March is Irish American heritage month, but we don't have a British-American, or Scottish-American heritage month.
  • The lack of a Scottish American heritage month is a serious injustice.

The tories can go cry in a corner, though. Fucking white house burners.

(OK, mostly being a dick for lols, but honestly don't feel bad that the former colonial power we rebelled against to even have a nation doesn't have a special holiday)

  • Purely informational question: to me this seems to say "she started using!" Later the title clarifies that she's using a FOSS tool of some kind. Is there a word missing? Or is "!" (just an exclamation point) a FOSS app? I get the overall gist of the message, but I'm confused about a detail.

  • Utah Legislature Votes to Uphold Subminimum Wage for Disabled Workers
  • With that argument, any employer can pay any employee less than minimum wage by arguing that they don't do "minimum wage work." The point of minimum wage is that subminimum-wage jobs should not exist at all.

  • Breaking all the Records now!
  • This isn't a fair comparison.

That said, it's been horrifying to realize that the current leadership of Israel appears to have learned only one lesson from the Holocaust: This time, we get to be the Nazis.

  • YSK the difference between lead and led (and similar-sounding/looking words)

This drives me nuts when I see it done wrong, but it's actually kind of complicated because English is orthographically deranged.

Lead (/liːd/) [verb, present tense]: to guide, etc. I asked them to lead us in a rousing revolutionary anthem.

Led (/led/) [verb, past tense]: as above, but past tense. Later, we were led to a blank concrete wall.

Lead (/led/) [noun]: A soft, poisonous metal. Bullets are most often made of lead.

    Just to make it confusing...

Lead (/liːd/) [noun]: kind of like "leader". Officer Johnson was our lead on this operation. (Note: it also means "leash"; e.g., I clipped the lead to Bowser's collar.)

Lede (/liːd/) [noun]: The first bit of a news story, often the first sentence. I didn't read the full article, but the lede suggested the protesters were decimated by police.

Leeds [proper noun]: A Town in England. Leeds is the worst place to stage peaceful protests.

    And finally...

LED (ell ee dee) [noun, abbr.]: Abbreviation for light-emitting diode. For the love of any gods you might believe in, fucking capitalize it. Electronics hobbyists I'm looking in your direction.

    More Examples

    • Wrong: I was lead into the woods by a stranger.

    • Right: I was led into the woods by a stranger.

    • Wrong: The lead in an ad about cheap bulk led lead me to lede my leed dog to Leides on her led lede.

    • Right: The lede in an ad about cheap bulk lead led me to lead my lead dog to Leeds on her LED lead.

(The last example is stupidly confusing, but it was fun to write.)
