‘The grey zone’: how IDF views some journalists in Gaza as legitimate targets
  • Targeting state media because you're at war with that country is bonkers. Imagine the outcry if Ukraine were assassinating TASS reporters on sight.

  • Steam users have spent $19 billion on games they’ve never played
  • Inquisition is pretty good, if you haven't tried it yet.

  • Ukraine destroyed columns of waiting Russian troops as soon as it was allowed to strike across the border, commander says
  • You're the only one here talking about Israel and Palestine. The rest of us are talking about Russia and Ukraine. Neither of those two (nor the US) signed the convention on cluster munitions.

  • Ukraine destroyed columns of waiting Russian troops as soon as it was allowed to strike across the border, commander says
  • And using cluster munitions is banned.

TFW you don't know how treaties work

  • Ukraine destroyed columns of waiting Russian troops as soon as it was allowed to strike across the border, commander says
  • Wuh-wuh-wuhddabout... Get a new tactic. That one is completely worn out at this point.

For our other readers, those missiles were intended for the military facilities nearby and were shot down by Russian AA and debris fell on the beach (hence the lack of explosions)

  • ‘They miscalculated’: Gaza’s floating aid pier failing to deliver in rough seas
  • I hope they learn good lessons from this. The main strength of the US military is its logistics, and being unable to deploy a simple pier is concerning.

  • Finally a useful feature (no)
  • Can't wait for an AI toaster that asks me to prompt it on toastiness levels

  • The battle for lithium: US and China fight over Argentina’s white gold
  • In some applications sure, but Lithium batteries are denser. Lipo in particular has no substitute yet.

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • A real solution for Haiti needs to come from and be supported by the people.

Of course, but it's impossible for them to do that when the country is under the thumb of warlords. Having a successful former colonial state helping stabilize things makes a lot of sense. Kenya has been there and done that.

  • The battle for lithium: US and China fight over Argentina’s white gold
  • Ah, this helps explain the Biden + Milei meeting. I can't imagine Captain Libertarian siding with China.

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • I would prefer to see a non-military solution.

Me too, but that would only really work if Haiti had a functional government to maintain order. Unfortunately that ship has sailed.

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • Kenya as far as I know has no experience in operations of this type — do you think it's reasonable to expect them to do this alone? It makes sense that the US are helping to get this up and running. I expect a fuller handoff when whatever they're doing is in place.

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • What would convince you?

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • Americans don’t seem to understand that every time they swoop in to ‘save’ Haiti, what they are really doing is enforcing the same colonial ideals that landed Haiti in the mess to start with.

You might find the article reassures you on this point if you decide to read it!

The truth is that the United States outsourced the Haiti mission to Kenya. U.S. President Joe Biden has admitted as much: “We concluded that for the United States to deploy forces in the hemisphere just raises all kinds of questions that can be easily misrepresented about what we’re trying to do,” Biden said in May during a news conference with Kenyan President William Ruto, adding, “So, we set out to find a partner or partners who would lead the effort that we would participate in.”

  • U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why.
  • a Kenyan-led security mission to Haiti

This is very odd, but also very intriguing. The President met with Biden a month ago, so this tracks. I kinda hope this happens just to see how it plays out.

Edit: this will also be a great test of who reads past the headline. There are going to be a lot of knee-jerk "Murica Bad" comments.

I don't think I've seen anyone else here with an 8:9 monitor, so I'll break the ice! The color theme is Layan Light; everything else is stock KDE.

Why do you grow mushrooms? What for?

I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?

Reddit's cofounder Steve Huffman said in its early days he filled up most of the site with content using different accounts until it got more users.

Fifth Order of Angels (1974 radio broadcast)

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.

It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.

A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:

    >A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?

USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?

This is on EndeavourOS (basically Arch)

Just picked one up. This is the best price I've seen this year. Very strange monitor but awesome for work - it even serves as a USB-C docking station with 90W power delivery.

Why does Pandoc get updated nearly every day?

Please forgive the noobish question, but what's going on with a document converter that it gets such frequent updates (and by extension forces a ton of Haskell updates)?

Trying Fedora. Never rebooted so often in my life

Even back in the Windows 3.1 or 95 days I didn't have to reboot this often - sometimes twice a day. Seems a bit excessive?

File permissions on mounted drive - can read/write but can't drag into apps?

RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!

I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?

Finally using Linux full-time thanks to PopOS

I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.

(too bad about the name, though...)

Using Linux for work - need a good email/contacts/calendar system

(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)

I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.

Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!

    Alternatives to the stock market?

I'm probably preaching against the choir here, but I've become quite disillusioned with the stock market. It seems to no longer have any correlation to reality (assuming it ever did). Other than real estate, what are other good avenues to explore?
