Accomodations?
  • Two small accommodations that have worked for me as a biochemist working in a lab.

One is that she needs to give deadlines for requests. She cant just say “get that to me ASAP” because does ASAP mean drop everything and do it now, stay late to finish what she needs tonight, or end of day tomorrow, etc. Or “hey I need ____” with no specified timeline, doesn't work. She knows that my time blindness means I don’t remember how long ago she told me to do something, and I’m so busy with other shit that I easily lose track. I think it’s been two days, it’s actually been two weeks. She now gives me due dates. It’s less stressful than never knowing when she actually needs something.

Another is if I’m running an experiment then I can’t listen in to meetings like everyone else, because I get distracted and fuck up my experiment. My boss knows that if my experiment is the higher priority then I won’t attend any meetings during that time, and she’s fine with it. If it’s an important meeting I have to plan my experiment around it, or just do it another day.

I’m not sure if these qualify exactly. I didn't have to go to HR to document my disorder and request these accommodations, I just talked to my boss as these things became problems.

  • Is it normal for white vinegar to sizzle like peroxide when you use it as ear drops?
    1. In an acid base reaction, yes it does. An acid donates a proton, a base accepts a proton. The less acidic compound will accept the proton, making it the base. Acting as a base does not make it alkaline.

    2. Correct, the acid base reaction itself does not cause bubbling. However, baking soda and vinegar are not the only compounds that react to form CO2 (or another gas) in an acid base reaction.

    3. Looking at the components of ear wax reveal it’s composed of a wide variety of different compounds. It’s been a while since I took o chem, so I’m not up to the task of determining which of these components are or are not capable of producing CO2 (or any other gas) in an acid base reaction with acetic acid. Do you have a source detailing these possible chemical reactions?

ETA: The people in this thread are so eager to shut down misinformation that they are actively spreading misinformation that would be rapidly disproven in any gen chem college course. I’ve learned my lesson on trying to share cool chemistry facts with internet strangers.

  • Is it normal for white vinegar to sizzle like peroxide when you use it as ear drops?
  • Yes! Earwax is slightly acidic (~6.1 pH) while acetic acid is more acidic (5% vinegar is ~2.5 pH) so the earwax acts as a base in this reaction.

ETA: there may be other things it is reacting with as well, like leftover soap, but this is how acid base reactions work. A chemical does not need to be above pH of 7 to act as a base. The more acidic compound will give its extra hydrogen to the less acidic compound.

  • Has google stopped working for finding anything?
  • While i do think people are exaggerating that google is useless, and the kagi push on lemmy is suspiciously strong, I do still hate what google has become. It lies to me almost every time I ask it what movie an actor has been in.

google claims Alan Tudyk is in Andor when he isn't. There are one or two articles of people suggesting that he might end up in Andor, but nothing official. Google pulls from the rumors and says “yep, he’s clearly in Andor”. The way i search this is by typing just an actors name then clicking the “movies and tv” option.

    google search

    imdb for andor

    imdb for alan tudyk

I refuse to pay for a search engine. DDG is alright, not great, but at least it doesnt lie to me.

Best resources to share with unsupportive family members, to correct harmful ADHD myths?

I’ve been diagnosed for a couple years, and my husband just received his official diagnosis. His brother is saying things like “ADHD is over diagnosed these days, since your doctor is a specialist he might just be handing out diagnoses” and “just make sure you rely more on the therapy than meds because the meds are harder to come back from” (???), and “everyone has ADHD these days thanks to the internet”.

He’s not intentionally an asshole, he just knows nothing about ADHD. He doesn’t understand how extensively it impacts our entire lives, not just our attention spans. My husband is planning to sit down with his brother to go over the official report, but with how resistant he is to this I’m wondering if y’all have any good additional resources for correcting these harmful ADHD myths.

App no longer tells me when updates are available

I have to visit the app store to manually update.

Bug: clicking a link from the home/all feed, then backing out causes jump to beginning of feed

If I click into a post, then the link, then try to back out, it goes back to the post and then goes back to my last position in the feed, as expected. But after clicking a link directly from the home/all feed, when I try to back out it no longer keeps its place, instead jumping back to the top of the feed. Using the voyager app on iOS.

[Suggestion] Subscribe to community without entering community, just like blocking

I browse all-new to find communities to follow or block, and I’m loving how easy it is to block without having to enter the community. Would also love to subscribe to communities with the same ease. Just a small QOL improvement.

    Blocking NSFW Question

I’ve been blocking porn communities on this account (I have another account for all that). Every time I block one I get the option to either block all NSFW or only the community. Does blocking all NSFW just block NSFW communities, or will it block all NSFW content? I don’t want to randomly have porn in my feed, but I don’t want to block posts that might be NSFW for other reasons.

Now the word block looks weird, I’ve written it to many times
