  • Thanks - I'll have a poke around later in the week. Definitely not going for the dual air fryer one as I already have an air fryer. Looking forward to making chickpeas from scratch again πŸ˜‹

  • Yeah I definitely meal prep - fell off the wagon for a bit after I was sick, but now that I'm back from leave I'm keen to get back into it, especially as I might be cutting my work hours further.

Spending less time faffing about in the kitchen is always a win... I think I'm sold. Now to budget for one. Can I ask what size you would recommend for one person wanting to do at least 4-5 serves at a time?

  • For real, lentils and beans are a big part of my diet - being able to pressure cook without faffing around on the stove or worrying about things exploding is tempting (finally I can have a crack at making dal makhani). And as you say, SET AND FORGET - huge reason why I use a rice cooker. Being able to do pilafs and the like in the instant pot is very tempting...

  • The exhaustion is hitting me haaaard again, slept til 11am, then had a slow breakfast, followed by going to three shops for groceries... then just sat in my car and snoozed for another hour. That's bad, I normally chill in my car on my phone but have never actually slept in it.

Still haven't done my readings either... But I made food?

Tonight it's khichuri (the lentil-and-rice origin of kedgeree without fish in it) in the rice cooker, with mung dal as the lentil, and my first attempt at vegetable korma (thickened with coconut milk and cashews blended). Wish I remembered to buy frozen peas to really add to it.

    not particularly aesthetic pikturz

Not a bad dinner if I say so myself esp with some super intense lime pickle to cut through ot all. Gonna freeze some of the excess korma for a nice dinner later on.

After visiting my aunt I feel inspired to get an Instant Pot to make this dish (and many others) more quickly...

  • I won't have time to cook enough this weekend to freeze but I'm definitely looking forward to having more time soon to restock the freezer. Bless my aunt for her overflowing supply of food ready for any emergency

  • Home now and hungry as. My aunt lovingly packed some leftovers for me but I definitely need more. Maybe with the money I saved on uber (and not touching on...) I could indulge in takeaway... or maybe not, I'll have that as an option for tomorrow instead. I could throw in some air fried frozen fish to bulk out tonight's meal instead. Tonight is time to just blob out and watch TV and relax, tomorrow I have to get back on the academic horse.

  • Just landed on the tarmac but I have checked bags to wait for as well... Likelihood of avoiding footy crowds if I take the Skybus and tram seems low if the game'll be over by 5...

E: uber too pricey, gonna take my chances with PT, wish me luck πŸ™ƒ

E2: exiting the cbd... scattering of glum-looking folks around with red and white scarves...

E3: forgot the 48 stops right out the MCG, here comes a tramload of sad Swans supporters, at least it means it's unlikely there'll be inspectors coming on board!

  • $8 for a soy cappuccino, well fuck you too Perth airport. But I'm the sucker who paid it so can't complain can I.

Developed a bit of a sore throat after talking myself hoarse to a friend yesterday, I shall be drowning it in the requisite throat lozenges + meds + hot water and honey when I get back because I'll be fucked if I get the flu again...

  • Miserable Melbourne weather out west after a ripper 29C yesterday, guess it was to prepare me for coming back home. I'm still feeling anxious about uni and not being up to what's required of me - but the TLC at my aunties has been really great. I'm glad I'm not staying longer or I think I'd get to a point of indulged-in inertia that I won't be able to get out of in a hurry...

  • I know not of this cold basking in 22C and full sun out in Bestern Australia. 29C tomorrow, then a Melbourne-esque pivot to 19C and rain on Friday before I head home.

I'm not really that keen on going back to work at one of my jobs after this...

  • Sometimes, if I'm feeling low or lonely I'll have some jazz on, especially if I'm cooking or it's cold or I need to motivate myself to clean. About 40% of the time I'll have some atmospheric/ambient music on when I'm trying to fall asleep. I'd be less likely to if someone was around I guess

  • Started off my holiday with an evisceratingly bad case of the runs on Sat am and I'm just coming a bit better. Not cool, body - not at my aunties where there's a billion and one delicious goodies 😭 and I want to go on walks and everything and have energy... have been sleeping for long long hours. I need to just let myself thoroughly rest. Taken a while for my mind to uncoil itself

My aunt has really slowed down a lot in the last 18 months though, physically and even mentally a bit. It's a looming reminder that she won't be around forever. I'll feel rather lost when that happens.

  • Ugh, I hate that feeling when your ears don't pop after a flight... but I'm glad I got some shut eye even though the person next to me had no concept of personal space. I generally avoid night flights for this reason even though flying during the day "wastes time". Good night 😴

  • A glass of wine would've been a great idea! Didn't think of that.

If the weather had been better I would've definitely taken Skybus but I figured I would rather buy myself some peace of mind after a very overwhelming week.

Seems busy enough but not disgustingly so. I think a lot of the families with younger kids would've gone by now. Weather has caused some delays here and there. I'm ready to fall straight asleep once I board - hopefully soon.. It'll be 1:30am Melbourne time when we land so I'm taking all the sleep I can get

  • Daily Discussion Thread: πŸˆπŸ“¦ Friday, September 20, 2024
  • Yep, got here about 50 minutes before boarding, plenty of time for a burrito and unwinding before I board. I'm glad I wasn't dying of anxiety trying to will the Skybus to go faster. I actually missed my flight back to Qld because of Skybus delays way back in 2011 or so and have never trusted it since...

Australia abandons effort to eradicate varroa mite after 14,000 bee hives destroyed

I remember how big this was for a while - only for this bit of news to be buried with a short article. Surely the scale of infestation (resulting in the change in approach) is going to have significant impacts to pollinator-dependent agriculture?
