Update: Downloading all archive.org metadata
  • If you store it in compressed chunks (or on a file system that supports compression, I guess), that should be a great deal smaller, being text only.

They supposedly never delete good stuff, just make it unavailable, as you said. Maybe we'll get them in a hundred or so years!

ArchiveTeam's uploads also don't have torrent files (anymore). Their wiki says that they disabled it to lighten the load on IA's servers, as creating a .torrent file for a 10+GB upload takes considerable time, especially if it has to be redone.

  • Default browser in most Linux distros (a counter to Windows is spyware)
  • Splitting, also called binary thinking, black-and-white thinking, all-or-nothing thinking, or thinking in extremes, is the failure in a person's thinking to bring together the dichotomy of both perceived positive and negative qualities of something into a cohesive, realistic whole. It is a common defense mechanism, wherein the individual tends to think in extremes

  • !technik@feddit.org is fun because most articles are in english, and if the first comment is made in english, then all the german comments get downvoted to hell. But if the first comment is german, english speakers won't dare chime in. It's a modern day battle royale of languages!

  • Spider Twigling
  • I was lying in bed, on my phone probably, when I felt this exact feeling. I'm not too terrified of this, so I just shooed the back of my neck with my hand to make the feeling go away. Just to be safe, I thought I'd check anyway. Right in the direction I had moved my hand there was a spider scurrying away. I probably showed it to the closest window, as is standard procedure. I didn't know to feel terrified that you can just be attacked in your own home like this, or excited that it was actually a spider for the first time.

    Archiveteam Veoh grab

Just looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem to me like archival will complete before the shutdown date (nov. 11). There are 2million+ elements left, likely 100TB+ of videos.

If you care to help them out, see instructions at the top of the page. Be sure you have a "clean connection", though.

edit: They're saying that the current rate seems to be plenty enough to finish by the deadline. Workers are often left idling at the moment.

youtube mishaps in the Wayback Machine

The September 17th archive of the oldest public video on ashens' channel is saved with the comments section of a completely different video.

(only loads on desktop for me)

Not sure how this happened, usually it's no comments section at all.

If I were trying to make a point here: an archive doesn't even have to be malicious to contain misleading information presented as fact.

    Newsboat - filter youtube shorts?

Is there any universal or newsboat specific way to do this? The RSS feed itself doesn't even hint at it being a short, so probably not.
