Ford finds a new home to develop affordable electric vehicles
  • They chose Long Beach, CA in case anyone is just skimming Lemmy. According to another article, one of the main reasons was to attract engineering talent.

Rivian is based just 25 miles south in Irvine and there's Fisker in LA. Tesla and Lucid have a presence in the Bay area, so could be a play to lure those who want to relocate south as well.

  • Electric lawn equipment, solar could be home-electrification ‘gateways’ | People with firsthand home electrification experience are much more interested in cutting fossil fuels from other areas
  • We have solar but found another option, push reel mowers was perfect for our small yard. It's a bit more of effort if the grass is tall (we have UC Verde drought tolerant grass so I let it grow out to cut down on watering) but I don't ever have to worry about batteries or gas/fumes/noise. Plus I get a workout and it was basically the only type of mower that's still made domestically.

Can attest the Amish-made ones are built like tanks and run smooth (provided the grass is on the shorter side)

  • Accidental cutaway of hole drilled with spade bit. Also is 2x3/4" plywood a good vise jaw idea?
  • Depends on the type of work, but you may want something denser down the road if you find you're cranking down on a narrow piece and it's flexing. Even something with more plies like Baltic birch might give you more mass, but I've only ever used hardwoods for my vises so can't say for sure.

Also recommend those cork/rubber jaw liners for added grip.

  • This is what I try to tell people who just want the cheapest things possible. We're voting with our dollars what kind of world we want.

Also, shipping things across the sea burns some of the worst fuel for the environment so I'd rather buy things made here and support the local economy whenever possible.

  • MSFT has a $3T market cap and $60B of free cash flow each year, so I doubt they're hurting for money. This is how "growth at all costs" incentivizes myopic decision-making and doesn't really help foster an environment where studios are willing to take creative risks. Even when they succeed (a la Hi-Fi Rush) they're on the perpetual chopping block.
