The NYTimes is once again trashing the most promising mobility innovation of the 21st century
  • Elijah Orlandi makes deliveries for Grubhub in the evening after his 9-to-5 job.

“There are scenarios where people have the right to be upset,” said Orlandi, who lives in the Bronx and has been making e-bike deliveries for Grubhub — in addition to his 9-to-5 job — since October. He has seen e-bike riders “swerving in between cars and all that kind of stuff.” But Orlandi is also hoping for compassion. “People got to understand, we’re working,” he said. Delivery apps, he noted, keep track of how quickly workers make their drop-offs — and ding them if they take too long. “Sometimes you’ll be going somewhere and Grubhub will send you another order, and then no matter what you do, you’re going to be late,” he said. “So that’s why you’ll see a lot of people rushing.”

Surely the problem here this dude's e-bike. Not that people need to do gig job on top of 9-5 work day, unaffordable rent, inflation, and exploitative gig economy platform

Houthi leader: "Y'all cowards don't even fight the Great Satan"

    https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/gaza-exposes-some-arab-nations--ties-to-the-west--sayyed-al

"The enemies are mobilizing according to a well-laid schedule intended to target our Islamic Ummah," Yemeni Ansar Allah movement leader Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said on Saturday. In a statement on the anniversary of the "Shout Against the Oppressors" yearly event, Sayyed al-Houthi said that the Western conspiracy, disguised as "fighting terrorism", sought to occupy Muslim nations and control their people. "A few of our nations' sons are trying to present our enemies as friends to ally ourselves with. A few of our nations' sons, governments, and regimes, are asking for the United States' protection, and in turn, they offer everything to it," he explained.

He underlined that the fear of the US has become a state that is controlling some of the leaders, officials, and elites, and has spilled to affect the masses. He noted that in certain Arab countries, pro-Palestine protests have been met with oppression. Al-Houthi ascertained that "the enemy wants to shackle these nations to prevent them from taking a stand, and the governments' stances cripple the masses." He further affirmed that the active attack of regimes against their people who champion the Palestinian cause shows the reality of the kind of relation tying these regimes to the US and its nonchalance regarding the Ummah's issues.

On Yemeni solidarity, Sayyed al-Houthi noted that a plot existed to subdue the Yemeni people, lock them in a state of surrender, and keep the stage open for the Americans. On Friday, Al-Houthi stressed that the responsibility for taking additional practical steps against the occupation lies with the Arab and Islamic countries and that they should not be sidelined. He explained that these countries have political, diplomatic, and economic options regarding the aggression on Rafah. "If the Arab regimes do not dare to adopt any position, let their peoples take action."

He underlined that the Islamic and Arab worlds needed to be at such a level of deterrence that they are able to defend themselves from danger, stressing that only the undertaking of serious steps could benefit them as the Israeli occupation does not care about the calls of the international community to stop its aggression and it does not care about the magnitude of the crimes it is committing. The Islamic and Arab worlds need to move consciously and break free from the state of inertia that has affected many of their peoples, the Yemeni leader stressed.

She's been writing such shit at the NYT for 41 years. In 1999 she won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
  • Remember she won a Pulitzer for slut-shaming Monica Lewinksy, painting her as a bimbo, "predatory", and Bill was the victim all along. Dowd is the face of internalized misogyny, in her columns she only takes on female politicians and victims of sexual harassment in politics.

McDonald's will buy back all of its Israeli restaurants after sales suffered from a boycott of the brand over its perceived support for Israel.

The fast food giant was criticised after its Israeli franchise gave away thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers.

McDonald's said it had reached a deal with franchisee Alonyal to return 225 outlets.

It said in January the Israel-Hamas war had "meaningfully impacted" business.

Widespread protests affected sales in the Middle East, Indonesia and France.

Alonyal, which is led and owned by chief executive Omri Padan, has operated McDonald's restaurants in Israel for more than 30 years.

McDonald's uses a franchise system which means that individual operators are licensed to run outlets and employ staff.

The boycott of McDonald's was sparked after Muslim-majority countries such as Kuwait, Malaysia and Pakistan issued statements distancing themselves from the firm.

Days after the Hamas attacks on Israel last October, and the retaliation by Israel Defense Forces (IDF), McDonald's franchisee said on social media that it had "donated and continues to donate tens of thousands of meals to IDF units, the police, hospitals, residents around the strip and all rescue forces".

Vocal protests were staged worldwide as the grassroots boycott spread beyond the Middle East. As well as restaurants in the region, McDonald's businesses in France, Indonesia and Malaysia have also been affected.

On Thursday, the company said: "McDonald's remains committed to the Israeli market and to ensuring a positive employee and customer experience in the market going forward." It also thanked Alonyal for building the brand in Israel.

Mr Padan said: "We are encouraged by what the future holds."

The US company said the restaurants, operations and employees in Israel would be retained "on equivalent terms" though the terms of the sale were not revealed. Under Alonyal, McDonald's employs 5,000 people.

At the start of the year, McDonald's chief executive Chris Kempczinski blamed the backlash on "misinformation" but it hit the firm's financials nonetheless and it missed its first quarterly sales target in nearly four years.

The boycott was described as "disheartening and ill-founded" by McDonald's. The company relies on thousands of independent businesses to own and operate most of its more than 40,000 stores around the world. About 5% are located in the Middle East.

"In every country where we operate, including in Muslim countries, McDonald's is proudly represented by local owner operators," Mr Kempczinski said at the time.

"So long as this war is going on... we're not expecting to see any significant improvement [in these markets]," the McDonald's boss added.

The company will be hoping that by taking the Israeli business back "in house" it can restore its reputation in the Middle East and meet its key sales targets once more.

Much of the Gaza Strip has been devastated during the Israeli military operations that began after Hamas-led gunmen attacked southern Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages. About 130 of the hostages remain in captivity, at least 34 of whom are presumed dead.

More than 33,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry said.
