I’m fairly new to the Fediverse, and I'd like to share my onboarding experience. Personally, I appreciate the concept of decentralization and the community-driven aspect of Fediverse. I’ve used Mastodon and Lemmy, based on ActivityPub, for a while:

I find it difficult to get all the updates I need on a particular instance, and except for a few very large instances, most others appear quite quiet and like the Internet ten years ago.

The content and style of each instance tend to be quite diverse. To find someone to follow, I must switch between different instances with lengthy domains.

Fediverse isn't truly decentralized; instances operate under the will of server owners, who can ban and remove content as they please.
These reasons prompted me to explore more decentralized networks, I mean truly decentralized networks, such as Nostr.
However, creating a Nostr account and saving the Recovery Phrases is challenging (I lost my first Nostr account due to the loss of Recovery Phrases). And generally speaking, the user experience on Nostr is much worse than Mastodon, full of scam and ads.
I believe people should leave Twitter due to shadowbans and robots and Facebook due to privacy concerns, but I'm struggling to choose a platform to migrate to. Each has its drawbacks, making it difficult to decide.
I'd love to hear your opinions on this.
I prefer to opt out of using this feature for a simple reason: I already hate when people call my phone, so why would I want X users to call me? Also, X doesn't have a good record of creating a safe, trustworthy space. No way would I ever trust Elon Musk enough to carry out calls over his infrastructure.
I sincerely recommend that people opt for safer alternatives, such as WireMin and Element. Calls on these platforms are end-to-end encrypted, and since they are decentralized, there are no central servers to save or analyze our calls. It’s important to ensure that our calls are not being monitored for ad targeting based on our conversations.
If decentralized platforms seem too much for you, at least use Signal, which also offers end-to-end encryption for calls.
X owner Elon Musk has long floated the idea of charging users $1 for the platform. Now, the team is moving the idea into production.
X (Twitter) to soon begin charging $1 annual subscription in order to tweet and interact.
Next move must be to charge users deleting their accounts $1. And Elon can sell your data to make more money.
As the news says, “Based on your consent”
X Corp (formerly Twitter) has updated its privacy policy to collect biometric data from premium users to prevent fraud and impersonation.
"Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes," The revised policy of X(Twitter) is expected to go into effect on September 29, 2023.
The thing is, biometric data is permanent and can't be changed. If we share that with X, it could mean lifelong privacy risks. And seriously, I can't think of a single reason why Elon needs to know where I went to high school for data security purposes.
People keep talking about leaving Twitter, but when will they actually do that? I guess they'll just keep putting up with it, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Since when did Twitter become a platform for sending death sentences? Isn't there a better alternative?
This WireMin thing has made me confused. I checked out their website, and it looks like they're calling themselves a decentralized Twitter.http://wiremin.org/#/blog/6 So I also did a quick search on Twitter, and apparently WireMin has quite a lot crazy fans promoting it actively. What surprises me is that these fans haven't been shadowbanned by Twitter. Perhaps freedom of speech actually exists on Twitter? Lmao. Just joking, not a fan of Elon Musk's twitter.

Social connection. It would be nice if I could be confident and good at making friends with strangers. I have no idea why I feel so lonely when in the crowd and even more lonely when I'm alone.

I don't want to do everything with this app or any app. An everything app means monopoly and manipulation.
I miss the old Twitter when I saw the stupid X animation.
Twitter X is Elon Musk’s world. Pretty soon he’ll have so much control over his platform that he can practically cron kings and manipulate outcomes to fit his personal political agenda. And don’t even get me started on his whole stupid “X the everything app bullshit.
The only everything app that has succeeded so far is WeChat in China. But it’s apparently a surveillance app for the masses by the government. Seriously, why the hell would I want to link my social media account with my bank account and even my government ID? What’s the benefit in that?
I’d rather keep the digital me disconnected to the real me.
http://wiremin.org/ It's a new decentralised messaging app that enables end-to-end encrypted chats. It's similar to Session but more interesting groups without annoying moderators. I personally like the fact that it doesn't require any personal information to log in and it doesn't have any cloud servers to store my data.
It all comes down to what matters most to you. Twitter will still be the best platform for finding celebrities and latest trends at least in the next few years. While if you're looking to have private discussions with close-knit groups without concerns about surveillance or privacy breaches, I recommend checking out Session and WireMin. On the other hand, if you value high-quality content and a place that respects freedom of expression, you should give Mastodon, Bluesky and Lemmy a try.
