Is anyone else into demoscene videos?
  • Is there a good aggregator for demos? Or should I just start watching some on YouTube and hope the algorithm starts including them?

  • Microsoft insiders worry the company has become just 'IT for OpenAI'
  • Wow you just shined a ton of light on a problem my company had. We wanted to implement a medical imaging system from one of their subsidiaries, and it took an average of 3 months for the salesperson to respond to EACH of our emails

  • Euro 2024 violence: Turkey and Georgia fans clash in Germany
  • Today in European news:

A BRAWL broke out between Turkey and Georgia fans. They FIERCELY shouted at each other through some railings while throwing plastic beverage cups at each other.

Then, during the game, a player was GRAVELY injured when a defender tackled him directly in the shin guard. He rolled around on the ground for 5 minutes before medics saved his life with the magic spray.

    Yall are cute :)

  • If I'm in an interview and I hear the company call business hours "core hours", I'm immediately running. That is corporate jargon straight from capitalist hell. They don't even hide that they're trying to own our lives now, so they say "non-core hours" to try to normalize working at 8pm.

  • Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?
  • Proms were around for ~50 years before we started seeing "promposals", where guys would ask girls out with 3 minute-long choreographed dances in the middle of the quad for the whole school to see & record for social media. I'm not saying it's stupid to put effort into asking someone, it can definitely be cute, but it can also be ultra cringe if you take it too far

  • We are absolutely dining during this Direct
  • Guess I was just too excited to be more descriptive lol

  • We are absolutely dining during this Direct
  • My post was slang for “we’re getting a lot of great announcements during this direct” but doesn’t look like people understood 🤷‍♂️

  • Yooka-Replaylee! | Reveal Trailer
  • Sadly, I don’t think ray tracing is going to fix how boring this game is. I also backed the kickstarter because I’m a huge Banjo Kazooie fan. I started this game 3 separate times and could never will myself to get more than halfway. Not only is the gameplay uninteresting, the writing just doesn’t have the same charm as the BK games

  • Most painless way to play Old School Runescape on Linux?

I see there are several different ways to install OSRS on Linux - flatpaks, Android emulators, Steam, etc. - but can anyone recommend the best as far as ease of setup? With lack of glitches being the second priority?

I have an AMD GPU that is quite recent (<5 years)

Do you get sick of the same songs and how do you combat it?
  • Dude I experience this PLUS my mind just has to have a song playing internally constantly, so even if I don’t actually play the song, my mind will beat it to death if it’s catchy enough

  • Linux admin with 20 years experience, looking for "beginner" distro [Solved, the real beginner distro was the Debian I've used along the way]
  • I know Gnome is in your less important list, but Wayland is in your important list, so I’ll recommend KDE Neon. It’s Ubuntu without snaps and moronic auto updates, so it really just feels like a more desktop-ready Debian

  • Can the internet ever be fun again?
  • the concentration of assholes is always going up

True, but this isn't a natural phenomenon, it's a result of engagement-based ranking algorithms. Assholes attract engagement by starting flame wars and the like, so front page algorithms push them to the top.

Before social media, forums were popular and their sorting was simply by most recently updated. I think this is part of what made the internet more fun: instead of websites trying to guess what you would like most, you were given a practically random, diverse view of everything.

  • Open source LaTeX book first release
  • Sort of, if you’re writing a research paper or presentation or something like that with a lot of math in it, you can use Latex (for the whole thing, not just the formulas). It’s 10000X better than writing the same stuff in Word, especially if you know how to code

  • Open source LaTeX book first release
  • Yeah, even in that sense… the irony

Ok I’ll stop being a prick 😂 if you haven’t used Latex before, you do write source code that gets compiled into PDF/PPT/whatever

  • [Community Challenge #16] Character Limit

It's my turn to set the Community Challenge for this week...

    Theme

This week we're doing theme via creative constraint. Make whatever you want, you just can't use characters. More specifically, no characters, named or unnamed, from any stories, songs, games, etc. That includes mash ups.

You can definitely still have people, you can still use tropes, and even create your own totally original characters. Just no reusing existing characters, or obvious derivatives

    Rules

    1. Follow the community’s rules above all else

    2. One comment and image per user

    3. Embed image directly in the post (no external link)

    4. Workflow/Prompt sharing encouraged (we're all here for fun)

    5. At the end of the week each post will be scored according to the following grid

      | Prize | Points | | --- | --- | | Most upvoted | +3 points | | Second most upvoted | +1 point | | Theme is clear | +1 point | | OP’s favorite (me, this week) | +1 point | | Most original | +1 point | | Last entry (to compensate for less time to vote) | +1 point | | Prompt and workflow included | +1 point |

    6. Posts that are ex aequo (tied) will both get the points

    7. Winner gets to pick next theme! Good luck everyone and have fun!

    Past entries

    1. Dieselpunk
    2. Goosebump Book
    3. Deep Space Wonders
