    • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm 2Bed Synthetic #FAUXFUR
    • Razor: Wolfman Guerilla (Gen 1) #CNC
    • Blade: Bolzano Superinox (German) (11)
    • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Almond Creme - Soap
    • Post Shave: Old Spice - Hawkridge - Aftershave
    • Fragrance: Brut - EdT

    Theme justification, from the Stirling website:

    Scent Description

    Delicious Marzipan is the second name for this soap. It really needs no other description, other than to say you might try to eat it. It tastes like soap, though. Don’t ask how I know…..For Men and Women.

    I used the "#CNC" tag earlier in the games, but thanks to the portal I was able to realize that I effed it up and put it in the wrong place. So here's my second attempt at getting that scavenger hunt item.

    For the "#FAUXFUR" tag, it will be up to the lovely judge to decide. The AP Shave Co. website doesn't have much in the way of marketing descriptions, but with the lower part of the bristles being light colored, then a band of darker color, then another band of light color -- it looks like it's imitating a badger knot. But, if it's deemed to not count, I'm ok with that.

  • (Meta) So many questions here are not open ended. Does anyone care?
  • I don't care.

    I help moderate a community that tries to mirror how things were done on Reddit, and over time we decided "this isn't Reddit, we don't have nearly as many users as Reddit, so there's no need to run this place like Reddit".

    Eventually this community and others will reach a tipping point where there's a need to cull posts and have stricter content guidelines, but for now I think it's ok to be a bit lax.

  • I just put a new prop on my 60" Extreme Flight Laser. Between the spinner and the prop there are 6 screws and 4 bolts, so it took me 2 an hour and a half to drill holes in the new prop, balance it, and install it.

    I bought a simulator recently and it's really helpful for learning new tricks. All of the old farts at the club feel like they're getting a free airshow when I fly!

  • I've never been able to go to a gym for exercise, so it has to be something outdoors. Hiking is great exercise if your knees can take it. It's gentler than a lot of other stuff, but downhill can be a knee-buster.

  • Weekend Free Talk Thread
  • I have a lot of hobbies, and I decided a while ago to trim my time down to wetshaving and RC airplanes.

    Tinkering with electronics will be reserved for an "as needed" basis, like when something in my smart-home setup stops working, and I sold most of my woodworking stuff.

    Unfortunately, RC airplanes and shaving do nothing for my physical fitness, and I've always had an interest in biking. I have a nice road bike, but I refuse to ride it on actual roads so I don't get run over, and having to put the bike in my car to drive to the nearest rail-trail isn't much fun.

    I have a mountain bike from 2004 (20 years old!) which has a steel frame, a hard tail, and 26" wheels. I've tried riding it on the trails behind my house, but it doesn't quite cut the mustard. Modern mountain bikes have changed A LOT, and I've wanted one for the past few years...

    So I got one. It has full suspension, an aluminum alloy frame, 29" wheels, a dropper post, and geometry that's "slacked out" as the kids say.

    I've been on 2 rides so far, and already feeling stronger. It's so much more fun than the old bike, and we're lucky to have numerous trails to ride around here. I have a small trail system right in my back yard, or I can throw the bike in my car (I know I said I don't like doing that, but it's worth it if it's fun) and have access to probably 30 miles of different trails within a 10 minute drive.

    I'm stoked! Gnarly!

    I can't believe these Trafalgar brushes are $45 now. I think when my wife got it for me they were closer to $30? Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

    Anyway, assuming this is the knot they use, it's $21 at AP Shave Co. https://apshaveco.com/products/28mm-independent-synthetic-fibre-knot-bulb-uhd

    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (2)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Topanga Fougere - Soap
    • Post Shave: Barbasol - Brisk - Aftershave

    If you've ever smelled Martin de Candre "Fougere", this is very similar. I prefer Topanga Fougere, as it's slightly less bright and comes in a better soap base.

    The Damaskeene is pretty much the perfect GEM razor for me. It's mild compared to most other GEM options, but the results are pretty damn good! Not as close of a shave as, say, a Micromatic Open Comb, but more more fun.

    Would we be having this much fun

    ``` Fougère Friday
    "Product scent must demonstrably be a fougère (one of the most prevalent fragrance families in men's fashion). It should be marketed as a fougère or classified as one on a reputable site. Note: The mere presence of lavender, coumarin, and oakmoss in a product does not make it a fougère (nor does their absence necessarily rule the category out)! Ask an expert ahead of time if in doubt. Caveat: WK Fern Concerto is not eligible for this theme because of reasons. Just ignore that one." ```
  • "Easy" might just be relevant to your experience. You can follow along with the Ansible instructions, or go your own way with Docker and Docker Compose.
    Both methods require a bit of work to get spun up, but it's not too bad.
  • Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?
  • I would separate the two -- Prom isn't necessarily theatrical in nature. It's usually the first time a teen gets to dress up and do something special with friends, but the type of thing you're seeing sounds like pretty typical "lets see if I can go viral" narcissistic behavior.
    I haven't seen anything like what you're talking about, but Prom isn't the only target of this type of thing.
    • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Smokey Grapefruit - Soap
    • Post Shave: Aqua Velva - Ice Blue - Aftershave
    • Fragrance: G. Bellini - Homme - EdT
    No special challenge for me, but I hope everyone who attempts it has good weather.
    Smokey Grapefruit smells just like it sounds. Grapefruit is the main scent, with a smokey background similar to what you might smell with tinned smoked herring. Probably a "liquid smoke" type of smoke scent.
    Grapefruit is a citrus, so that's my argument for being on theme.
    Relevent post-shave and frag: Aqua Velva Ice Blue is a really nice aquatic scent with a hint of menthol. Perfect for summer. G. Bellini Homme is a cheap knockoff of Dior Sauvage I got from Lidl. I'll leave it to the judges discretion, because the fragrantica page for Sauvage doesn't really make it sound citrusy, although bergamot is a top note. This knock-off is a citrus bomb to my nose.
    Some reflections on the cost of shaving soap.
    To start, it goes without saying that this shaving hobby is typically not a money-saver, even if it's pushed as such by enthusiasts trying to convert people to this style of shaving. Looking at the price of shaving soap using price per oz. is fairly common (I still do that sort of thing even when I'm in the grocery store), but die-hard hobbyists tend to scoff at it, because, well, you sometimes get what you pay for.
    With that being said, there are people all over the world with varying budgets, and like any hobby you can spend as little or as much as you want. From Col. Conk to Sebum Gold, there's a wide spectrum of cost for shaving soap.
    In this recent video from Stirling Soap Company, Rod talks about how tubs are the most cost effective form factor. Samples and even Refill Pucks are more labor intensive, making them more expensive per oz. You might assume, as I did, that a refill puck would be cheaper per oz. because it doesn't come with a plastic jar, but you would be wrong.
    But wait! Take a look at Barrister & Mann. They recently lowered the cost of their samples to $3.99USD, and their samples are a full 1 oz., just like Stirling. That makes them $0.11USD cheaper than Stirling samples.
    Now lets do some math.
    5.8 Stirling samples to make one of their shaving soap jars: $4.10*5.8 = $23.78, a lot more expensive than just buying a jar for $14.24USD.
    4 B&M samples to make one of their shaving soap jars: $3.99*4 = $15.96, a whopping $9 cheaper than buying a tub for $24.99!
    Does a tub, label, etc. cost $9 extra? Are the samples a loss leader like rotisserie chicken and hot dogs?
    Either way, it's great to have both of those companies offering generous samples. House of Mammoth also has relatively large samples, but they're 1/2oz for $6.00USD.
    Happy Anniversary!
    I see a few cakes next to usernames (my cake day is June 10th).
    It has been an interesting year, so thanks for hanging in there!
    This Lemmy instance is a nice place to hang out, so here’s to many more!
    I worked on the database stuff some more today and didn’t have any luck with getting federation of comments working again. I decided to upgrade the server to the new release, 0.19.4 even though it’s so new, with hopes that it might jump start some federation stuff – and so far it hasn’t! finally got federation back to a working state, at least so it seems, maybe?! Thanks @Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me.
    The new version has some neat new features, though.
    Under your profile you can click “Uploads” and see all of the pictures you’ve uploaded. Some of them seem to be “lost”, but that’s par for the course. You can even delete the pictures. Yay!
    Lemmy Schedule @lemmings.world walden @sub.wetshaving.social
    [v1.9.1] Even in previous versions, my instance of Lemmy Schedule stops working after some time.
    I don't really know what to look for in the logs, but with some guidance maybe we can figure this out. Here's how it typically goes:
    Set up daily recurring auto-post at sub.wetshaving.social. It works for about 1-2 weeks, then stops.
    I set the entire server to restart every 3 or 4 days, which makes Lemmy Schedule stable for longer, but still every week or two it will stop working.
    The solution is some sort of combination of restarting the Docker stack (Lemmy Schedule and Redis) and/or opening the Lemmy Schedule web interface and logging in, logging out, refreshing, logging back in, whatever it takes. The need to load the web page is odd, like it reminds Lemmy Schedule somehow that "oh yeah, there are posts to post".
    A lot of times when I log in to fix it, the scheduled post does not appear in the to-do list. We have a weekly post that stays in the to-do list, but not until I reload, log out, etc. will the daily post eventually find itself and reappear in the list.
    When it starts working again, it typically spits out the posts that it missed, sometimes in duplicate.
    Any ideas?
