- Takahē : "prehistoric-looking" birds released into wild in New Zealand - BBC Newsroundwww.bbc.co.uk Takahē : "prehistoric-looking" birds released into wild in New Zealand
A "prehistoric-looking" bird that was thought to be extinct, has now been released into the wild in its native home of New Zealand.
Older article (2023), but sharing for those unawares.
>The birds - which have been around since the prehistoric Pleistocene era - were officially declared extinct in 1898.
>After their rediscovery in 1948, conservationists began collecting and incubating eggs from wild takahē, to prevent them from being eaten by predators
- Know Nut November Day #10
Hello all,
based on this meme, I decided to initiate a little November nut identification challenge on Lemmy. After two days (#8, #9) on !treehuggers@slrpnk.net, today !birding@lemmy.world is requested to proof their nut knowledge.
Happy guessing!

- New guest at my feeder, a great spotted woodpecker
It actually manages to get some food from it with the long beak. I also suspect it to be the bird who picks up the peanut that I lay out in one of the flower pots every day.
- Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura)
These guys usually soar quite a bit higher and are hard to photograph, but a combination of the clouds and the closer proximity gave a halfway decent shot.

- Kite Seeking Kompany
Sitting up in a tree in Prospect Park, Reading, UK, calling away. Overcast day, so not as sharp as I'd like.
- Meet the Kid Who Wowed the Internet With His Incredibly Accurate Bird Calls | Audubonwww.audubon.org Meet the Kid Who Wowed the Internet With His Incredibly Accurate Bird Calls
The talented 10-year-old’s performance at a school talent show recently went viral on TikTok after folks couldn't believe their ears.
This kid really is incredible! I heard him and his mother interviewed today on All Things Considered. Managed to find this Audubon article to show my family. It links TikTok videos that show off what he can do. I don't really know how to share those directly and they often don't work for me because of registration requirements. I think they should work for at least one listen for you all though.
- Goldcrests
Reading, UK. Canon R6 + 800mm, 1/1000s, ISO12800 (AKA overcast and slightly misty as befits Halloween).
First time seeing a pair together (and not often seen at all) - though its possible both of these are females, none of my photos show the distinctive orange in the crest of the male.
Across the pond you might call them one of the Kinglet family, but to be precise, Regulus Regulus.
- Flap it off
Mandarin Duck, Reading, UK One of a group of at least a Baker's Dozen of them on a small pond., so I guess some will be off before the Spring. Canon R6 + 800mm, 1/1000s, ISO 5000, F9
- Redwinging It
Today's shots near the Yew tree got me this Redwing flying off - though I started pressing the shutter when I thought it was still.

- Song Thrush after Yew Berries
Reading, UK Canon R6 + 800mm, F9, 1/800s, ISO16000 An overcast autumn day is not the time for fast speeds and low ISOs, alas.
I'm reasonably sure this is a song thrush, but if someone wants to tell me its a mistle thrush go for it!
This is a very popular yew tree with birds and squirrels, but alas, no good places to sit with a clear view of the current feeding sites.
- Jenny Wren
Reading, UK Canon R6 + 800mm. Grey day, so only 1/800s, ISO4000
It always amuses me that once there were the Wren and Redbreast. Then there were Jenny Wren and Robin Redbreast (who famously got married). But then we ended with the commonest names being Wren and Robin. Tom Tit, and Maggie Pie are more of the same types of naming.
Oh, and a bonus
- Another Good Scratch
It's autumn, the light is not great, and so the sharpness suffers, but this still amused me.

- Jay's Off
For all its flying away from me, I was quite pleased with this. I saw what might be a jay land in uncut grass where I could barely see it. But I could also see a runner coming along the path and knowing the local Jays, it would fly off in ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... click!

- Pied Stilts (Himantopus leucocephalus) - Kedron Brook Wetlands Reserve, Brisbane, Australia - October 2024
I rode the new bike out off road, through grass tussocks and all sorts of bumps to get this viewpoint!

- Northern Flicker on my tree
I don't get too many Flickers around, so when I see one I try to get a picture.
- My little Pigeon :)
It's the older one of the two that grew up on my balcony. I haven't seen the younger one in a long time, this one i had not seen for two weeks (for which one i was on holidays).
Fed him some sunflower hearts. He is absolutely not scared of me and also not of my camera. When i tried to pet him, he picked at me and also hit me with a wing some time ago, haha. I don't think he'd do that if he was actually scared.
He then was sitting in the corner of the balcony where he used to sit with his little sister when they couldn't fly.
Mom and pops were just checking out my balcony again to find a place to nest, but i saw them do it yesterday already and upgraded the anti nestabiltity a bit. They left now, i don't think they found anything good today.

- Boomklever.
The Eurasian nuthatch, we have m on our balcony everyday and at first they got harassed by the blue tits but they all seem to get along now. They move smooth and appear glued to any surface.
This picture is not OC.
- Blackbird in the morning
Maybe my favorite birds. She ate some raisins on my balcony (i keep count) and let me get all close, i didn't even realize she was there at first when i went outside.
- Okay, I've decided that a break from Ibis photos is in order (Robin told me to post his portrait, and what Robin wants he gets)
