- Success Saturday - 19th August 2023
Welcome to.Success Saturday.
A chance for us all to share all our successes this week that didn't make it into their own posts.
What did you do well this week that made you smile.
Let's all pat each other on the back
- My mum got funding for a breast cancer drug that will dramatically increase her life expectancy!
My mum’s breast cancer came back a month ago - it’s stage 4 and it’s metastasised to her bones. Her life expectancy is about 6 months without treatment. She has triple negative breast cancer which is rarer, more aggressive and significantly harder to treat than the more common hormone-responsive breast cancers.
There’s a new immunotherapy drug, pembrolizumab, which is effective on advanced triple negative breast cancer when given alongside standard chemotherapy. But it costs £3000 per treatment and she needs 18 rounds of it. Her oncologist applied for funding and got it!
After 6 months of treatment my mum should have 23 months of “progression free survival” compared to 16 months if she had chemo alone. She’s only 57 so every extra day I can have my mum in life is truly a gift. I’m so so grateful for our NHS.
- today is my first true day of british success
This afternoon I’ve got my citizenship ceremony, then we are off to the pub. Can’t ask for much more!
Hope everyone has a fab Wednesday. Xx
- French farmhouse sourdough
Fresh out of the oven. My wife is a wizard in baking. For me its all just black magic. I’m not complaining, though!
- Made it through a whole weekend being on-call without being called.
I was on-call for work this weekend. The ever present threat of called online to solve someone else's problem.
Luckily nothing happened, I got to eat my Soleros on my balcony in peace, and got a some cash in my pocket for it.
- The BBC's Glastonbury coverage
It's excellent. UHD streams, decent enough sound quality, choice of what to watch. This is what I pay my licence fee for.
- Success Saturdays

Boiler broke. Called a guy I know (immigrant chap from China, he hates China). 40mins later at the door on the dot at the time he specified and 30mins after that boiler fixed. Bloody good work. :D
- Bagged myself my best username ever!
Can't believe I managed to bag the username david!
Tip: join feddit.uk while the good usernames are still spare! Thanks @tom@feddit.uk
- Free Greggs and all we had to do to earn it was get married!
Ok fine I'll start. Got married recently, it was about as stressful and mortifying as any such form of public performance, so I'd made my new husband agree we could get a Greggs immediately after the ceremony to stop me feeling sick.
We rocked up into the queue as a party of ten, me still holding a ridiculous bouquet, most of our friends looking self-conscious in their wedding finery.
Woman at the till gave us our cheese savoury stotties for free by way of congratulations, and the guy working in the back claimed it was the "Northernest thing" he'd ever seen. I have never been more proud.
(worked a treat to settle my nervy stomach for the rest of the day, as well)
