“But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow”
17 0 ReplyIsn't that one of the more obnoxious ones, saying people would only be into Mao to get laid?
18 0 ReplyThe song is Revolution and the lyrics directly preceding this are:
You say you'll change the constitution, well you know
We'd all love to change your head
You tell me it's the institution, well you know
You better free your mind instead
Institutional change? You’ve just gotta, like, free your mind, man

7 0 ReplyI think you can more charitably read this as a rejection of reformism.
1 0 ReplyHow do you square that with the Chairman Mao line?
7 0 ReplyI mean it's kind of true? Less so nowadays than it was then I'd say.
1 0 ReplyRegardless of the truth of the sexual prospects of Maoists, I don’t think it’s uncharitable to think that John was not a fan of Marxists.
4 0 ReplyThat's fair. I'm defensive about him because I've been a fan for a long time. Honestly, he was probably a part of my leftward trajectory early on. 'Imagine' is pretty radical. At any rate, I'm never going to hold artists I love to strict political or personal standards-- I probably wouldn't have anything to listen to!
