I have no idea why so many people are upset about Sync. There are so many FOSS alternatives. Just... don't use it? It literally doesn't impact you at all.
Voyager is basically as feature rich as sync and only continues to get better. That said I love sync. And its like being in a warm blanket again. I also don't mind supporting the developer with a one time payment to remove ads. The subscription doesn't bother me because he offers a fair alternative imo.
I'm not upset in any way about Sync. It seems like a quality app with a different business model.
What I'm actually upset about is people claiming open source apps are shitty and only Sync is possible to provide a good experience. That's just pure bs
This seems like a bit of a strawman argument. I haven't seen anyone say that explicitly—if they have, it certainly isn't common. I have seen people say they're willing to pay for a "higher quality app," and I can see how you could interpret the implication there being that FOSS apps are shitty in comparison. For me, though, I don't interpret it the same way, and I'd assume positive intent. Some people like Sync better than the other apps and are willing to pay for it. That's it, really.
I might prefer potatoes, but you might hate potatoes.
If we were looking at dishes in a restaurant, I might think one dish is a better value, because I like potatoes. You might think that that dish isn't worth it if you hate potatoes. It doesn't mean that the dish is better or worse, just that we have different preferences.
I don't use sync myself, so I can't speak on what specific aspects other people prefer over the FOSS apps. They might trust the developer more because they've interacted with them for a while, they might like how the UI works with their specific device, or they might even just like the logo. At the end of the day, it doesn't effect me, as I can just keep using jerboa.
That's a good analogy. The difference is that I've seen some comments saying that they really like potatoes because X sauce combo feel more polished for them (lol), and that's cool, but I've seen several claiming that potatoes are the superior dish, potatoes have way more combinations, potatoes are way better at everything, nothing can compare to potatoes... Omg you can link settings from the app another reason why it's the best app! (a custom html link that the app parses followed by an id code to redirect the app to that settings page, cool but kinda unnecessary to me).
And, it reaches a point where I just get pissed. 0 consideration, it's just hostile. Mind you, I also read people saying that it's the enemy of Foss yada yada, way less people and with tons of downvote at the bottom of the barrel, fuckem.
I'm just seeing quite the high victim complex from the sync users while belittling others, it feels a tiny bit like (and I'm so sorry for making this comparison) chistianity.
I'm just waiting for the wave to pass but it's still everywhere.
I bought sync for reddit over 10 years ago and used it daily. I had no issue what so ever paying. The app itself is nothing short of top notch quality and you can tell LJ is passionate about his work. He's continously updating the app and making improvements. Hell, you can spend more at a fast food joint vs the single one time payment option.
Oh I'm definitely going to give it a try once it hits fdroid so it's easy to update. I'm not somehow thinking that Sync is inherently better than Foss apps. But it was always going to feel more mature. It's a conversion of an app that's been in development for 11 years, rather than a brand new app.
Sync for Reddit was a popular-ish third-party Reddit app. The dev has been working on building a version of it for Lemmy, and the surrounding community has been pretty excited for it. Recently, Sync for Lemmy was released, and there's been a lot of fanfare, conversation, etc. In my opinion, it's the most polished Lemmy client by far. Some people are annoyed that the premium features cost significantly more than they did in Sync for Reddit. The dev said it's to offset the smaller user base, which seems reasonable to me, but it's spurred a lot of arguments about the paid model.
The big one is that it introduces ads while Lemmy is an ad-free platform, and the option to pay to remove ads isn’t regionalized, so for some people it’s wildly expensive to buy. There’s also some question about some of the permissions.
Yeah that's my take. If you like what you have, just keep using it lol.
I switched to Sync is because it seems to play nicer with my foldable phone than Voyager or Jerboa, but otherwise they're all pretty much just as solid as each other imo
