The Taliban will attend a UN climate conference for the 1st time
An Afghan official says the Taliban will attend a UN climate conference for the first time since their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
It's good to see this instead of them pulling a North Korea. Climate change is a global issue, and they affect and are affected by the climate regardless of who is in power.
And hopefully, international engagement will show the people what it's like outside Taliban rule.
They know, they remember. And, of course, they won't take any women with them.
Nobody is going to really talk about preserving climate in Baku of all places. The only areas not similar to Mordor polluted wasteland in Azerbaijan are not Azerbaijan, they are occupied Artsakh and sparsely populated mountains, villages with sheep and all, to the north of it. And the main reason they remained kinda green is that they were not controlled by Azeris.
It's only called a climate conference, in fact it's a meeting for Azeris to make deals on selling their oil or something.
I know people here are laughing but they'd probably offer something serious.
Solar power blew up in neighboring Pakistan because the government forgot to make a reliable power grid, so now even the cheapest homes have an array on the roof.
Taliban probably want some of that action and will look to see where they can buy.

Why? I've heard a lot of bad things about the Taliban, but being heavy polluters isn't one of them.
I think that's mostly because they haven't had the opportunity. My cat isn't a heavy polluter either, but he also isn't running a country.
They are probably going to come in talking about how great they are for the planet. Spreading the gospel and all that; the Stone Age doesn’t produce as many greenhouse gases as the industrial age, after all.
The conference is in Baku and compared to Azeris Taliban is almost normal.

I am sorry, I have seen you on this sub a lot of times and I usually agree with your take, but I don't understand how this is a joke. I know that their "government" is highly conservative and authoritarian, but this seems like a step in the right direction. Their total C02 emissions in metric ton as per available data is way low, so considering that they aren't even a polluter to begin with and global warming affecting them just like the rest of the world, I don't understand why this is laughable. I don't know if there's something more going on than meets the eye, so I would appreciate if you could point that out.
