A Linux Desktop for the family
  • Long time Mac user here because of a steam deck. I’ve enjoyed KDE so much because of how much tweaking I can do. It basically feels like my Mac now, with the dock and the placement of the window management buttons, but also more colorful and “game-y”.

A week ago, I started tinkering a bit more with some other new options and it just wigged out, forcing me to reset it to default appearance in order to see anything again, and I spent and afternoon putting things back to how I liked them, albeit a bit different.

Also, now searching for global themes only results in an error and I have no idea why, nor how to fix it.

Nothing I do really makes it perfect, and I find myself a little put off by things such as my window styles not perfectly color matching the application styles because they were created by completely different artists with different goals in mind.

That said, my steam deck is a toy, and playing around is pretty much the only thing I’m doing with KDE and Linux at the moment. I am finding fun in it, ever if frustration is involved.

  • I’m certain my YouTube feed is trying to radicalize me into some kind of culture warrior. It’s really annoying. I deleted all of my watch history to try and reset it and it just got way worse real quick. I watch one stupid video, now all I see are angry tubers upset that people don’t think exactly like they do and enjoy things they don’t. Then they convince themselves they’re more enlightened than anyone else because they make this content and ban anyone who makes fun of them, all while claiming to be “free speech advocates” of course.

YouTube got bad so fast it’s left my head spinning.

  • Between Social, Run, and Artemis, I’m beginning to think kbin might be cursed. I’m on my fourth kbin instance, but have decided to revisit my lemmy account to enjoy some native ios app experiences again.

  • Zotac Gaming Zone handheld gaming PC launches for $799 (with Ryzen 7 8840U, 120 Hz display, and dual trackpads) - Liliputing
  • Not a fan of whatever that D-pad is. I’m also curious about the battery life.

Thrilled to see twin touchpads though.

The more handheld PCs get made, the more I become aware of just how ahead of the curve Steam was with their deck design. I actually thought it looked gaudy as hell when it launched, but since using it, I can’t get over just how unexpectedly handy anything is. I just wish there were better haptics, since I’m kind of a sucker for that kind of stuff.
