At just 16, Gout Gout removes Peter Norman's national mark that had stood since 1968, producing a faster time than what Usain Bolt ran at the same age.
With a kid in Little Athletics, I've taken an interest in junior track and field this year. I've been following Gout's antics for about six months, now.
At 16 (almost 17), He just ran the fastest 200m time by an Australian sprinter, ever.
Gout's time is faster than what Usain Bolt ran as a 16-year-old — 20.13 — and second on the men's all-time world under-18 list behind American Erriyon Knighton (19.84).
And the thing that strikes me is that Gout Gout is a terrible starter. I mean he'd still beat me over 10 m, but he wouldn't even make the podium of this race over 10 m, despite how completely dominant he is by the end. He could shave off half a second at least with a better start.
Here's the 100 m final so you can watch him. Keep watching for the U18 women's final immediately after (starting about 6:01:00) for another dominant Queenslander performance, or pull back to 5:44:00 for the U17 women's where Queenslander Thewbelle Philp did better than the U18 winner and got the 3rd best Aussie time under 18.
Damn, you're right. I'm not a runner but now that you pointed it out, even I can see his start needs work! He's gotta be losing a lot of energy wobbling like that...but once he gets moving, holy shit is he fast
Yeah I am a runner, though more of a distance fan than sprinting. Still, it was noticeable that his style seemed awkward at the start. But even without that, what is very clear is how far behind the others he is at the start, especially considering how far ahead he is even by the finish line of the 100 m (let alone 200 m).
