TW: Suicide. Unnamed Trans veteran draped themselves in a trans flag, and committed suicide at a VA hospital. Only the local news seems to be saying anything.

  Names are absent from the headlines today to a dehumanizing degree.
  
  That's likely because news is often being posted as soon as possible and later updated with new information. It's not like the olden days where the news has to be printed.
  I also suspect that the news are careful to post names even if they know them because they don't want to hurt or offend the victim (if alive) and relatives. It must be pretty awful to find out from the news that someone you love committed suicide. IMO journalists should seek consent from relatives before going out with names.
  I for one would hate for my name to be in the news if I did something like this and I'm positive my relatives would feel the same way.

I don't read the local news very often so I don't know anything about this specific story, but the people here lean (slightly) conservative. Despite this, I haven't heard anyone talking about trans people negatively (at least by adults, I did hear a teen being an asshole though)
though also I haven't been out a lot since the government was taken over so I'd not be too surprised if transphobia has gotten worse here

National news is likely waiting for a return call from Elon to see if it is ok if they mention this.

Pretty sure it's not a crime so the term "committed" doesn't fit.
- It is a crime in most US states. If you find yourself hospitalized after a suicide attempt, you will be guarded around the clock until you’re well enough to be moved to a state psychiatric facility. You remain property of the state until release from said facility. You may petition the court to prove that you are stable enough for release, but you’ll likely be released before you see a judge.

- Iirc the phrase is based in religious thought that suicide is a sin or crime against God. Committing suicide or having committed suicide are commonly used, in USA English anyway.
  
  Yeah as far as I know that's the way it is in most western countries. A lot of our laws are based on Christianity. Along with every national public holiday being based on special Christian days. In places where they like to complain about how discriminated against and hard done by they are (while enjoying their freedom to openly discriminate against all flavours of queer people and anyone else they consider a heretic).
- People get committed to their romantic partners all the time. You know, a wedding.
  Commit means more than doing crime.
- The term commonly accepted today is died by suicide. It takes into account that suicide is commonly tied to underlying mental health challenges and isn't necessarily a choice the victim made, but rather a lethal symptom of those mental health conditions.
  
  I've seen the term "completed" suicide.
