What are you playing this weekend? 2025-03-07

Mainly waiting for Xenoblade Chronicles X, so didn't want to commit to any long game, but ended up starting lots of different games. Some of these I started previous week but forgot to mention.

Still playing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations .

Have reached the very end of case 2. The case is really good, and if rest of the cases are similar, I can understand why people consider it one of the best game in the series.

Going to focus on the game now, to finish it before 20th.

Finished Alan Wake Remastered.

I shared my complaints last week, nothing more to add. Even with those issues, loved the game. Specially the narrative.

Also played both DLCs, and then watched the Control's AWE DLC let's play (I played it when I played Control) to finally understand the context of what's happening.

Don't want to spoil the ending, but it wasn't what I was expecting, but it makes sense. Looking forward to playing Alan Wake 2, and see where the story goes from here.

Still playing Paper Trail on tablet (Netflix sub).

Not much to add here, the gameplay is fun. Slowly playing it for 5-10 before sleeping. Recommended to all puzzle fans.

Playing Trine 2 on PS. Played the first one on Switch, IIRC and while I enjoyed the game, never got around to playing around any of the sequels. Trine 2 was given away as PS+ monthly game quite a while back, so playing that now.

Game is similar to the first one, you have three characters, you can change to any of them on the fly. One is a mage, that can summon boxes to help with the puzzles, one is a knight that has a shield and can do melee combat, he can also break some walls etc. third is a thief who can attack with a bow and has a grappling hook type thingy.

Using all three you have to solve a series of puzzles and fight through enemies. There are tons of checkpoints so combat is never an issue, even if you die, you can just run back 5 seconds to the checkpoint to revive all your characters.

Puzzles are also not that difficult, they are mostly just how to open the next door, or reach some ledge, but some of them still stumped me for a bit.

I am on 4th or 5th level. Generally when I start playing on PS, play one level of the game, before switching to whatever else what I want to play. Should be done with it soon-ish.

Started Devil May Cry. The first one.

Always wanted to try the series, to gave it a try, but the game is really old and the controls feel very clunky. I am stuck at the first boss, Phantom, at level 3. Not ready to give up on that. But not spending too much time on it either. Will try it a few times more but if can't beat it, may just drop the game.

I was expecting more, since I enjoyed playing Bayonetta, but this is a much older game, so it makes sense for it to be so clunky.

Playing Just Cause 3 on PS5.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the game, but I have played about 4-5 hours yet and enjoying destroying stuff and liberating areas. There is a basic story and you get missions, but eventually it end up as "liberate these many more areas" before next mission.

Surprisingly, the environment is not fully destructible. After hearing so much about how much things explode in the game I was expecting structures to be fully destructible, like Red Faction games. Still, not bad for game of it's time.

Movement is lots of fun. While you can take over any car, bike, ship or plane, you also have a grapple hook, wing suit and parachute! Which are all lots of fun.

That's all on my end. Unless I forgot some game again. What about all you? What have you been playing?

  • Also waiting for Xenoblade, I started Xenoblade 3’s DLC last week and finished it this week. It’s not short; I just happened to have Spring Break off of school. My big questions about the series weren’t answered so I spent the last few days watching YouTube explanations of the plot and I think I’m ready for Xenoblade X.

I’m still avoiding Picross S 8 so that I give other games the proper attention they need. Of those games, I pulled Citizen Sleeper out of mothballs and played for an hour today. More than anything, it made me want to break out I Was A Teenage Exocolonist again. Or finally buy Famicom Detective Club: The Smiling Man (or whatever it is called).

I’m continuing on with Octopath Traveler II, inching my way through the story mode. I need to pay closer attention to the battles; the mobile game added an auto-battle mode so I’m very tuned out when I hear the battle music now.

In non-Switch news, I got to play Cabo, a fun card game, with my son today. I’ve been watching a walk-through of the Danganronpa fan game Project: Eden’s Garden. I was yelling at the video as I watched the first execution. I’m over ten hours into the videos now.

    • Heh, I did the same thing after finishing Xenoblade 3's DLC.

Cabo looks like a fun game. Seems a bit similar to Uno.

  • Last weekend was the first time in 2 months that I actually played a game for more than just a quick test to see if graphics were working on my PC. Something in a game gave me an unexpected emotional response that didn't feel right and caused me to just not play games for a while. I uninstalled thst game and stopped playing it. I'm feeling somewhat better now but the response was just a symptom of bigger issues I'm planning on getting help for.

As for what I did play last weekend, I did a bit of level/money grinding in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. It's a big difficulty spike between Romaria and the pyramid and I got to the pyramid very under-leveled and underequipped. The grind is a slog though because monsters in the overworld don't give out much XP. That said they do give decent money so maybe you're supposed to rely more on items and equipment to get you through. Hopefully I don't have to grind TOO much more to feel comfortable venturing back in farther than the first few rooms.

    • It's completely fine to take a break from gaming (or any other hobby) now and then. Hope you feel better soon.

That's my biggest issue with these older games, too much grinding. I was hoping the remake would have reduced the need somewhat.

  • I played some more Brothership. Mario's Bomb attack is driving me crazy. As soon as I get the 30 Excellents for the medal I am never using that move again!

But most of my time has been and will still be dedicated to Monster Hunter Wilds. My main issue with the game right now is how story-driven it is. I don't know what is was like in World, but I don't like being kidnapped by the plot into areas I don't want to go yet and locked out of the quest board. I like the quest-based approach I've gotten to know, I don't need story segments before and after every single monster. It's okay for some of them to be optional! As an avid armor-collector, I like to take things at my own pace.

But that's a short-term issue, stories end eventually. The gameplay has been solid so far. My Switch Axe works beautifully, though I miss Soaring Wyvern Blade. It took some fiddling with the options and getting used to the controls to make the Seikret follow my orders properly. One wrong button and he starts automatically moving towards whatever the target is, which drove me crazy until I learned what the correct button is.

The one thing that really bothered me were the Soulflies, these little fireflies that highlight items and show you the way to your target. There's just too many of them! You can barely see what any item is because they absolutely swarm them! Luckily, if you're on PC, there's a mod to remove them. I'm sure a future update will add an option to at least turn them down a bit, though.

What shocked me recently were the drop rates of the rare items. I came across my first Plate-type drop and I was excited to get one on my first try! Those used to have 2-3% chances to drop, depending on their source. What I have seen so far were drop rates of 5, 7 and 12%! I hope that's just a Low Rank thing, because what's the point if everything is served on a silver platter? I'm here to hunt monsters, why are you giving me less reason to hunt monsters?

Last week, you asked about the performance and I haven't really had any issues. I even went from performance mode to balanced when I realized the game ran better than the benchmark led me to believe it would. I was wondering if that was ever going to bite me, but earlier today I fought Rey Dau, the thunder dragon. Lightning strikes and particles everywhere, the ground sparkling like mad and I didn't notice any significant frame drops.

I did, however, have a few moments where the game just stopped for 5-20 seconds. I don't think it's a performance issue though, since it seems to happen at complete random, even in the middle of dialogue once. It happened 3 times in my 17 hours and the game doesn't continue playing while it's frozen (i.e. the monster has to wait, too), so it's not actually causing any problems and I can live with that.

  • Playing Trails Through Daybreak II!

    Currently on Chapter 2-A.

Enjoying the game, but not as much as the previous one. It's partially because it's not as "fresh" due to it reusing the same cast and locations, but there's also issues with the main plot that so far feels too much like "filler". The usage of the main gimmick has been underwhelming too.

I really like the expanded cast, finally getting more time with Elaine is great and Swim and Nadia have a fun dynamic with the rest of the group. I'm also enjoying the approch of having "sub-chapters" with different teams, it's a good way to use such a large number of characters while giving them all some time in the spotlight.

One thing I'm definitely disappointed is the Marchen Garden. I enjoyed the Reverie Corridor a lot and was expecting something similar, but this was a big downgrade. The dungeons are boring and long with crappy rewards, it doesn't have the fun character interactions that Reverie had, very few options for minigames and no story-related content like the Daydreams.
