It's a cue to leave me alone

At the gym, in the middle of a set. Some dude just walks over and starts talking to me. I can't understand shit because I've got earbuds in and I can't pause the podcast because I'm too busy holding the weight of a small person above my head. I cut my set short, put down the weights, pause the podcast and apologize, ask him to repeat as I couldn't hear him. Turns out it was just some small talk I never asked for. I politely entertain it for a while then he goes away.
4 minutes later he does the same shit all over again. Seriously some people are fucking clueless.
- The other side: "I kept trying to flirt with this guy at the gym, and he was NOT taking the hint. I wish men would just say what they want, instead of leading me on."
  
  Nonverbal communication is better in this situation, like a light touch on the arm and a smile, or taking your dick out your pants and helicoptering it at them.

- This happened to me literally every single session at this one particular gym.
  The worst offender was the dude who suddenly plopped down next to me (which was startling) while I was on the floor doing ab work and just started jabbering away. I just pointed to my ear bud and motioned him away.
  Mother fucker, I’m here to work on my fitness, not talk to every rando that decides to chat me up.
  I cancelled my membership that morning.

I wear my headphones doing household chores because I find them really boring and want to entertain myself during it.
DO NOT come to interrupt me. I don't want to stop listening and I sure as heck don't want to go back to the annoying chores after the pointless interruption.
- My addendum to that rule is they’re free to come interrupt me, but then they take over the chores.

Some of my students act like that. You are in school, put them away!

I get about 2 hours of charge on these, and you're eating into that right now.
- Ive never had any wireless ones in ear or over the ear that lasted less than twelve hours.

I have both earbuds in: don't talk to me.
I have one earbud in: don't talk to me.
I have no earbuds in: don't talk to me.

It's an interesting trend these days, people wearing headphones and earbuds everywhere they go.
It's not my preference, and I get that it's a personal choice.
I agree there are definitely times where it makes sense, alone at the gym for example.
But I see groups of kids walking around, most of them with at least one or both headphones/earbuds on/in, and I'm like, what are you listening to? I can't imagine doing that.
But obviously some people like it, it's just not me 🤷‍♂️
- Noise canceling headphones at the super market are a huge game changer for me. Turned a stressful thing into a vibe.

That's just a lack of commitment. You're wearing the headphones so you can ignore them. Just ignore them until they are in your face. They'll get tired of doing that.

I used to work with someone who had a postit in the end of a cardboard tube that said "Leave me alone". They would stand it up on their desk when they needed to focus.

These are the people who will start the revolution
People who can't even talk to each other without going ballistic and screeching internally over any perceived slight

Transparency mode was a game changer for me

I got a lot of this kind of thing today, except it wasn't headphones it was an earpiece for a two way radio, and it was designed to not stand out.... So I kinda asked for it.
But then people would rudely relay important information on the radio with no regard for the conversation I'm having; and since the other person has no idea I just got earblasted with someone's voice, they keep yapping on about their insignificant drivel and I miss half the conversation because of the priority messages rudely coming through the radio.
I was volunteering, doing communications at a local fairground.... This weekend it was a renaissance faire. Fun.

  I said the things in such a way as to exaggerate for comedic effect and also to contradict myself, again, for comedic effect.
  The underlying circumstances of being spoken to by someone in person while also having someone's voice nearly blowing my eardrum out over the radio, was entirely accurate.

"Oh, sry, I am listening to something right now and would appreciate not to be interrupted while I do so. If it's nothing important that you need to talk about right now I am more than happy to chat with you later on."

I got a pair of bone-conduction headphones for that reason... joke is on me because I still have to pause it.

The only person asking you to remove your headphones is your Mom.
Everyone is happy to leave you alone.
- I've had people I supervise act super annoyed when I talk to them twice in a day for like a minute because of this. You're not at home. I'm not your mom. I'm just doing my job by efficiently checking in on yours.

  For fun, watch an old war movie "The Dirty Dozen." Besides killing lots of Nazis it's a great study of how middle management actually works. The Major is given a job even his boss thinks is crazy, and all his troops are criminals and/or psychopaths.

  He doesn't want to talk to me, and I don't want to talk to him. Let him hide away from everyone, it's probably for the best.
