They're both incredibly stubborn and while they won't vote D, they'll stay home or protest vote if it's not their favorite candidate. If Trump is the candidate a significant amount of non trump Republicans won't vote for him. If it's anyone besides trump, the magas will still vote trump or just stay home.
On the democratic side a lot of voters really dont want Biden as their president, but will vote for him just to not get a Republican.

Also, it's too expensive. The US can afford it because they don't really pay for it: as the USD is the reserve currency of everyone else, and as oil is traded in USD, everyone pays for their military through inflation. The Euro isn't in the same position.
