There's no need to pretend. A war crime doesn't justify the other side to commit one in return. The international law certainly doesn't support a kind of tally system to check if one side still has committed to many crimes and a few more against them are OK.

I have three kids and feel wrong saying this - harming and killing kids is acceptable in war.
It is illegal to deliberately target kids/civilians, respond in a non-proportinal way, and not take actions to minimize civilian casualties in the conduct of warfare.
The other option is that any state that uses human shields has impunity to do what the want... which is also a war crime. I can tell you right now, if Hamas is using non-legal sites as bases civilians will die.
