Note this pic I'm posting stops before the 2023 event and all that has come since, so you can just mentally tack that on. Absolutely tragic. I can't imagine why they and their parents might be inclined not to trust Israel or Israeli colonizers.
Edit: Updated, higher resolution graphic, and link to source if you'd like to see it with less jpg.
Didn't you hear? Israel sent a "credible certification" it wasn't committing war crimes to the state department. Who is now breathlessly pushing news updates saying there's no evidence Israel is committing war crimes with US weapons. That "credible certification"? A letter written by a high ranking government official.
Right? Israel straight up announced it would keep Palestinians out of the port. To secure aid that was already vetted in Cyprus. There is no reason for that unless they're planning to block delivery.
While we can say with confidence that famine is a significant risk in the south and centre but not present, in the north, it is both a risk and quite possibly is present in at least some areas
I'm not a doctor or anything but based on the picture in the article alone isn't "quite possibly" really underselling it?
"Famine" is a technical term with quite a high threshold:
At least 20 per cent of the population in that particular area are facing extreme levels of hunger;
30 per cent of the children in the same place are wasted, or too thin for their height; and
The death – or mortality – rate has doubled, from the average, surpassing two deaths per 10,000 daily for adults and four deaths per 10,000 daily for children.
You should check out the actual part of the UN responsible for declaring famines, the IPC. They use phases 1 through 5 to describe the severity of the situation. Northern Gaza is Stage 5 and Southern Gaza is Stage 4.
The definition of their phases -
Differentiation between different levels of severity of acute food insecurity, classifying units of analysis in five distinct phases: (1) Minimal/None, (2) Stressed, (3) Crisis, (4) Emergency, (5) Catastrophe/Famine.
We are at Catastrophe. Famine is not a warning designation, it is when a lot of people start dying. The warnings have been coming for months. You do not wait until the IPC says, yup it's a famine, to treat it seriously.
ICJ order from yesterday sure showing off what their amazing power stands for. The "world order" everyone.
At least we now know that the Genocide verdict israel will receive in the future is worthless as well since everyone just ignores the ICJ. International Court of Jokes.
The number of trucks distributing aid in south and central Gaza had nearly reached 200 a day, an increase on a month ago, but more were needed, the state department official said.
On Friday the head of Unrwa, Philippe Lazzarini, tweeted that the ICJ’s ruling was “a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man made and worsening”.
Israel has faced accusations, including from the UN’s top rights official, Volker Türk, that it is potentially committing “a war crime” by continuing to obstruct food aid to Gaza’s population of 2.3 million.
The latest comments come amid mounting frustration in the Biden administration with Israel, which is a recipient of substantial military, financial and diplomatic support from Washington.
In a statement marking Arab-American Heritage Month, Biden said: “We must pause to reflect on the pain being felt by so many in the Arab American community with the war in Gaza.
The latest famine warnings came as the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, approved new talks on a Gaza ceasefire, and heavy fighting continued in the strip including at several hospitals.
The original article contains 845 words, the summary contains 184 words. Saved 78%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
They should start shipping large jars of peanut butter and loaves of bread to hospitals, instead of dropping food on the coast. The hospitals could give the food directly to starving children and their families. Peanut butter lasts forever, and will put weight on a person.
Dude. "Ship it to the hospital" like it's the US Post Office or something. Sure. Do you think that shipment will ever get across the Gaza border? Hell no. It will sit at the border like all the rest of the aid.
I hate to be "that guy", but have you not been keeping up with what they've been doing to Gazan hospitals? I'm sure they'd be happy to try chucking some of those jars with their artillery.
Where can a person mail food, and have it reach these children? I don’t trust many charities to handle a monetary donation. Could someone ship food via Amazon to a place where they could receive it? People are fighting each other on the beaches for the air dropped food in Gaza.
