Its been one day without Reddit
& I’m doing pretty good! The wefwef app has done a great job of recreating the Apollo experience and has made it a lot easier to not want to go and download the Reddit app. The more active it gets here, the easier it’ll be. How are you guys doing so far? Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?
Yeah Lemmy seems the way forward. It just sucks for all the subs that won't be making it here anytime soon. Niche subs I'm following for example, I'll still have to rely on Reddit.
There's definitely a period of transition. I didn't expect to completely jump ship since I replied so heavily on reddit for community information and general news. However Lemmy does look really promising.
It does actually. I'm creating a community for one of the subreddits I was a part of, hopefully more people will join and fully migrate from Reddit.
Still trying to find my footings. The thing I miss most is active engagement. The comment sections sometimes feel so empty. But I will give it time. All in all, I find the experience better than I anticipated. Using wefwef on my phone and the instance-site on my desktop and laptop. I am sure a decent app will be developed in time.
I felt that at first but I've found the engagement to be more meaningful here when it does happen, even though it's sometimes sparse or not at all. I came in the previous influx after spez started forcing subs open. I don't really miss it that much now.
I honestly feel like there is more engagement here. Most Reddit threads were like telling into the wind. By the time you got there it was almost always too late to contribute
I've found myself actually reading articles since I can't go in and just read someone else's synopsis of the content, which frankly is a good thing. I can get my own information and form my own opinions, Reddit just let me be lazy but it's a nice change.
As for engagement, just be the change your wish to see, and engagement will follow. I think there is still some fine tuning to be done in terms of the sorting algorithms as well, which would ideally get day old content out and active but fresh content in. A lot of dust left to settle with the great migration underway.
Been holding off on wefwef until now. I did not realize it looked so closely similar to Apollo. I’ll be using wefwef forever now.
It is quite sad and yet at the same time also an exciting time. I was on Reddit for 9 years and it has kind of become the internet for me.
I myself was 99% only a passive user, so I have contributed nothing to the value of the site. But the site itself had a lot to offer for me.
But I also realized that Reddit, the platform itself, hardly provides anything relevant.
I probably would never have used Reddit much without a 3rd party app, I also use it exclusively on mobile.
For me, the value of the site comes exclusively from the content, i.e. the community. And fortunately, that's something Reddit has no direct control over.
I realize, of course, that not everyone will be here now in 6 months instead of on Reddit, but it doesnt matter.
I think the majority of users are like me rather passive, but more important are the active users of the community.
It is much more important to have these pillars of the community on board, as they will sooner or later ensure that something new is created that will then attract the larger number of passive users.
And I think it's this usergroup that has angered Reddit for the most part. These are power users who probably all use 3rd party apps.
Nevertheless, many will of course stay, if you have put a lot of work and heart and soul into building up your community/subreddit for years, letting go is of course much harder than for someone like me.
Honestly, I'm pretty excited about being a "pioneer" (sorry to those who have been here for longer). I never commented much on Reddit, but plan to contribute more here.
I'm making an active effort to comment here more. I feel like that's the case with a ton of people who are here now and that's why the community seems so awesome.

Same here, if anything this whole thing has done me a favour. Many times the past year i've considered giving up reddit. I tend to scroll reddit when I play with the dog after walkies, and the amount of time my brain says 'why you do this shit?' as I scroll past nothing, looking at comment chains of constant bickering. Why am I scrolling pasts hundreds of pointless comments, meandering bad takes, puns, the time wasted...for what gain? It was kinda an addiction I guess.
The first day has been great tbh, Memmy feels good despite the instance' slowness. The Hot filter is pretty good for catching newISH posts, or light comment posts which i've been tagging onto.
It really feels like old school forum days, and it's been really awesome to have my inbox popping off with replies. What's the point of lots of comments like a big reddit thread when no one replies or even sees your comment? Really looking back, it was just pissing in the wind.
Or if you did get a reply over on pigboycity, it would be some massive drangus trying to start a fight. Just ugh. I deleted my posts and account yesterday, now reddits just gonna be my suffix for google searches when I need something (until the fed starts getting indexed over the coming months/years).
I also really like the look here. old.reddit to me always looked shit from a UI standpoint (Despite being massively better than New, of course). lemmy.world just looks concise without being overwhelming. I'm excited to see growth and engage with real people again just like the old days.
I have been using Wefwef and Memmy, and I’m not sure what I prefer, as they’re quite similar, but I think Wefwef is edging it out for me. It feels a little better.
I’m still on Reddit at the moment because some of the niche communities I’m into just don’t have a lot going on here. For instance, I love wrestling, I’m part of three wrestling communities on here, and Reddit still has more going on.
That said, I’m looking to get off Reddit completely sooner than later. Still finding all my communities. I don’t expect this place to get as big as Reddit, but I do want to see a little more activity.
I'm happy that boost for Reddit is still working, but I know that once boost for lemmy is released I'll never look back at reddit. Fuck u/spez for how he treated his users
Seems like Boost can go down any minute. It says it was shutting down on July 1 but it's still up.
Yeah, it seems that reddit hasn't yet made the rate limit changes to the API. They talk about it here how it will go into effect the upcoming week(s)
So far Jerboa has been the best one for me, I tried wefwef but wasn't a big fan (and couldn't work out how to uncensor NSFW content across the board, very annoying haha).
But Boost is coming out at some point! I'm really looking forward to it!! <3
So far I'm doing okay, just tough with how slow everything runs and all the network errors and stuff, but it's early days so I'm patient :-)
I'm here on the fediverse via Jerboa. I agree it's definitely deterring me from using the official Reddit app!
I'd been using Baconreader for about 10 years, and I'm blown away at how easy the transition has been. Still don't fully understand the fediverse (made my account yesterday lol), but this post was really helpful for getting started!
Hello fell Reddit Refugees! Yeah I've been a near daily reddit user on Sync for Reddit (Sync Pro) since 2014 or so. Now leading up to the API shutdown I was using reddit about once a week and you already know I had to use Sync one last time on the final day, but
I've mostly been using Lemmy for about two weeks now. I've tried a lot of apps (Jeroba, Thunder, Liftoff), but ultimately I also ended up on wefwef. It's seems to be the one of snappier ones so far. It's super strange because since it is themed after Apollo, it looks like I have an iPhone app on my Android! I know that when Sync for Lemmy comes out (about six weeks I think) I'll jump ship immediately, but for now I'm really liking wefwef.
I've made it my mission to lurk less on Lemmy then I did on Reddit so I can try and help the platform succeed with some small amounts of content that I can contribute. Recently I've been very interested in AI image generation, so I made a community centered around that. I also made a community centered around video game giveaways to hopefully share more wholesome content on the platform. Overall, I'm hoping that since Lemmy is so new that all of us can take some control in steering it in an overall better direction than Reddit. I'm personally on team No Karma, since I think it makes Lemmy a lot less toxic and a lot less about having something to brag about and more about being something to be proud of.

The only thing I really miss from Reddit is the cryptocurrency mainreddit and the subreddits. Lemmy is definitely going to be amazing once other like-minded individuals migrate to lemmy.
I never quite understood the appeal of the crypto subreddits. They all felt like dark pits filled entirely with grifters, and the analyses often reflected that. Finding a diamond in the rough insight was all I used it for. I’d love to learn whether I missed something.
Wefwef made all the difference. While I know it’s not Reddit the similarities in experience have made the move much easier.

I'm still struggling with the muscle memory of opening baconreader pretty much all the time. I spent some time on Reddit too, on my PC, and it's kinda bland.... Since everyone seems to be here. But this place is still ramping up, so I'm interested to see what happens in the coming weeks.

I used Boost Android app for Reddit and now moved to WefWef. It's already really good and looking very promising for the future considering the speed at which it is evolving
I have been trying Jerboa. No real complaints about the app, I just want to see the more niche spaces get more activity
I'm having the hardest time using Lemmy. I got Jerboa and subscribed to 3 communities. However I see other communities online and Jerboa can't seem to find them. How can I force Jerboa to locate a community?
People keep saying Lemmy is easy to use but it doesn't seem to be so far even though I'm really trying to stay away from Reddit. That's one thing that Reddit has an advantage in, it's very easy to use.
Lemmy is still in a very early stage and development is accelerating super fast in the last weeks. I read somebody say Reddit was also very hard to use 15 years ago. However I can absolutely understand the frustration that can come with Lemmy and all the young apps.
I'm no expert but I see two possible solutions for your problem.
One could be that your instance does not know the community yet. All communities that are local on your instance should be found by Jerboa. The most other big ones too, because other users of your instance have already joined one of them (only after 1 person subscribed, the community is known for everyone). If you are looking for niche communities, you may have to search with the whole link, so search for https://feddit.de/c/ich_iel instead of ich_iel and wait for 10 seconds.
The other one could be to to set standard links for jerboa. You can do this on Android in the app settings of Jerboa, I don't know how the option is called in English but it should be easy to find. Same place where you delete storage and cache, handle permissions etc. If you press on "add links" you can select all the different instances (feddit.de, Lemmy.world etc.). Maybe you can open the community you want to locate by opening the link to it with Jerboa.
That's only some ideas. You can also consider trying out other apps such as Connect for Lemmy or Liftoff. It seems Slide and Boost will also be developed if I'm correct. It needs some time until everything is round, but so far most of us are amazed what has already been done!

What's odd is that the instance I joined does seem to know about the other instance as I can see one community on the other instance. Could the community on the other instance be "hiding" themselves somehow?

Edit: I finally got it to work! I went to the web interface for my instance and kept searching for it and then it finally found it. Once the web interface found it, then Jerboa found it.
Unfortunately, the reddit app doesn't have the features I want - Sync was a perfect fit, I didn't want to see automod pinned comments on every thread (and a while ago reddit removed the ability to block automod natively), bacon reader did have this feature within the app but after a while stopped perusing it.
I can't use a client where I'm ass-blasted with ads and garbage that I cannot filter out, so here I am... We'll see how it goes.
I’ve been enjoying Memmy and Thunder. Tried it out for the first time yesterday and Wefwef is pretty damn close to Apollo. Personally, I’m excited for Artemis, which like Apollo was, is aiming to be a similarly smooth and robust standalone iOS app.
Honestly, I really want to use Lemmy, but the performance of Lemmy.world is almost a deal-breaker. Comments and posts don't load half the time, sometimes typing can even be slow wefwef. I feel like I've made my bed with lemmy.world and don't really want to make accounts on different instances in the hope of getting usable performance.

Can you move an existing account and the community subscriptions between instances?
I’ve been using wefwef too (and I’m also an Apollo refugee). Liking it so far, even if I am very confused about how a lot of this works. I hope the Lemmy community continues to grow!
This isn't the best example, but helped me a lot in understanding it (mostly) It works kind of like E-mail. Each instance is like an email provider. Lemmy.world, beehaw, lemmy.ml, ect are kind of like gmail, yahoo mail, and outlook. So the instance you signed up for is your "lemmy provider" as if Google is your email provider. Now when you email people, you can email to any other provider (yahoo, outlook, etc) and vice versa. They are all similar services but different providers, but they all work together so any person can email any other person. They are federated - one big services, but each provider has its own autonomy in deciding rules, features, etc. So most instances can work with other instances to share information/posts. But not all. Some have deferdeated form others and don't share posts/information. As if yahoo said they we're no longer accepting emails from google. So gmail user's emails would not get sent to Yahoo mail users, but others, like outlook, would. You would say they defederated from google. Much like beehaw did from lemmy.world.
I think that’s a pretty good analogy. One of the things I’m still struggling with is how communities work across instances. If I follow casual conversations on one instance, will I see posts on that community from other instances? Or do I have to follow each individual instance of that community? As I’m trying to find new communities to follow, I often get confused if I’m already following a specific community or which instance I should choose to follow it on.

15 year club on reddit. I've parted a few weeks ago and not coming back.

14 year club. Also not going back to mobile browsing Reddit. I was a baconreader user for more than a decade. RES and old.reddit seems unaffected so far but Connect for Lemmy is working well. Happy to see some traction here.
Wiped my 13 year account a few days ago and haven't gone back to Reddit since RIF died. I'm mostly just waiting for one of the apps (Sync or Boost for Lemmy) to come out to do a full replacement; for now I'm just mobile browsing here.
It's tough, I'll be honest. I can't completely wrap my head around lemmy, I'm confused about seeing communities I never subrscibed to (and some I wish I didn't have to see), and can't fully understand how it works. It also just.. doesn't have the same things I used to follow, or at least I can't get them to show up. I'm struggling, and honestly don't know what to do with all that empty time. I guess it really was an addiction.

Also, one of the first things I noticed when I created my account & searching for communities was that you can actually block a community. If you didn't want to see it, is all. I just thought that was pretty awesome considering how many times I wanted to on Reddit but couldn't.
I like Summit best of the three apps I've tried (Lemmy and Thunder being the other two). It's a pretty bare bones layout and style of navigation, which I prefer.
As for missing reddit, well... it seems like most of the community spirit/attitude was slipping away following the API changes. I'm hoping to find it again here and I like what I see so far!

Yeah I’m using WEFWEF, I like the Apollo vibe. Somehow I don’t miss Reddit that much. There is only one subreddit I missed. It is r/Ukraine as I don’t to find that much up to date info on Fediverse. I will open a telegram account to feed the fedi-communities. Hopefully there are some Ukranian/Russian speakers in here to help with translation.
Wefwef is incredible. I've never seen a web app that's even half as technically impressive, and it gets 2-3 major updates a day. Huge hats off to the devs.

I never used any Reddit app other than the official one but I wanted to check out Lemmy as an alternative and I’ve gotta say, I’m liking it a lot so far! I’m on wefwef as well and it’s a pretty good experience. I’ll probably start contributing to some of the communities I’m interested in to help them grow and hopefully the growth continues across the platform!
I’m also looking into hosting my own instance, I might work on getting that set up in the next couple weeks.
Only issue I’ve seen is that it’s been a little slow here and there, but I understand that it’s in the growing pains stage so I’m not too worried.
It feels so weird without my easy access to niche porn. Like I can get porn anywhere, but some of that niche stuff, it's hard to find that stuff again.

Porn May do better on Lemmy than Reddit in the long run. Advertisers don’t like porn.
