Wow, who would imagine that nobody wants to do an activity that you literally have to pay people to do on a regular basis? It’s almost like they’re not paying people enough and nobody wants to work for shitty wages.
I ran a small business and found the opposite to be true (particularly with people straight out of college) if given training and support, respected and incorporated their ideas, and provided transparency into the running of and health of the business. My take away isn't that people don't want to work, it's that they want to be valued.
I agree. Unfortunately many companies "value" their employees in the same way they "value" the privacy of their customers.

Oh but the fruit baskets are for our customers. You'll be making them, not receiving them. And you'll be expected to put them all together today, including going out and buying the baskets and fruit, on top of your existing assigned tasks, in the same amount of time since we won't approve OT for this.

Why is it such a shocking revelation that nobody actually wants to work? Left to their own devices people will make work up for themselves just to not go bored, but aside from that work is entirely a food shelter and other assortments thing.
I partly agree. But I also think that, for a large part of the population, they would feel a sense of duty towards their community, so long as the work is decent and they are respected.

Historically speaking, wage labour is actually quite new. Before wage labour became dominant, the usual career path was apprenticeship followed by self employment.
That true but, tbf, the "apprenticeships were little better than slavery and would fall under the definition, by our modern understanding of it.
