PlayStation VR2 players can access games on PC with adapter starting on August 7
  • I'm new to VR. Over the past few months I was considering a Meta Quest 3, specifically because I wanted to finally play Half-Life Alyx. However, I really didn't want to give Meta money/data (I deleted Facebook back in 2019), so that's why I've held off for so long in hopes that either Valve updates the Index or another option comes out.

Could you elaborate what I'm missing with some of these features compared to a Meta Quest 3 or Valve Index from a PC perspective? In my eyes, playing this on PS5 is a bonus to me.

HDR - I understand colors won't be as deep and brightness/blacks as high/deep which is a bummer considering the OLED screens inside the PSVR. I don't think the Meta Quest 3 had HDR? Neither does the Index?

Headset feedback - vibration on head? I'm assuming the other headsets don't have this, so I'm not missing much from PC games that don't leverage this.

Eye tracking - I don't believe Meta Quest 3 has this, neither does the Index? So it's in parity with the PC feature set?

Adaptive Triggers - I have a PS5 and when this feature turns on, it's kinda cool for a second but then it gets old fast. The only really good execution of Adaptive Triggers I've experienced so far is in Returnal. I just finished up FF7 Rebirth and the adaptive trigger sequences in there seemed dumb and unnecessary.

Haptic feedback - is this just a more detailed rumble?

I guess my main question is, doesn't this seems like the better option when compared to a Valve Index or Meta Quest 3? For my particular circumstance,I don't mind being tethered by a cable (at least I don't think I will, again I'm new to VR. Besides I'd be tethered anyway using a meta quest 3 on PC) and the headset screens on the PSVR2 seem to be really nice compared to the others.

Weekly what have you been playing discussion - week of May 13th, 2024
  • FF7 Rebirth. I'm sort of struggling to push through. I just got to chapter 10, figure if I'm this far to just mainline the story to completion. I fully completed the first two open world areas but have been ignoring most of the others after that. The open world traversal seems bolted on to the hallway simulator that Remake was. That and the quests in the open world don't feel substantial or consequential. Find this Spring, fight this legendary enemy, rinse and repeat. The campiness of the story is also getting to me.

For full disclosure, I didn't play the original on PSX but was always intrigued by the art style and aesthetic back when it released. Alas, I only had a N64 at the time and never played it in the later years through emulation. I'm not sure if the original has the same level of camp, but would like to hear if that's only in these games or in the series overall. The feeling I got from various advertisements was the game was more mature in tone than I've experienced so far.

I did finish Remake earlier this year, after initially trying it when it launched in 2020. The campiness of it turned me off a few years back but I really wanted to understand the hype.

I guess the only thing I'm getting out of it at the moment are the visuals. It's gorgeous, but I don't think I'm appreciating the story/lore like all the fans are.

  • 'Underwater bicycle' propels swimmers forward at superhuman speed
  • Seabike says the prop turns slowly enough that you can safely use it at the local pool – although you'll certainly cop some dirty looks from the Speedo brigade in the fast lane.

You're going to get dirty looks because you can't do a flip turn and block the rest of us. This is cool in the open water but not for lap swimming in a pool.

  • Telecaster build
  • Looks awesome, nice build!

Mind if I ask you how much of a pain in the ass is it to swap out pick ups? I recently started playing again and have been paying more attention to some of the gear some bands I listen to use. I was thinking about swapping out the pickups in a Squire Tele I bought, because why not tinker around - https://www.mk-guitar.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22_32&products_id=114

Might do the bridge as well.

I'm good with cracking open computers and changing out components. I could probably use some practice on soldering though.

  • All you need to know is that he labeled himself as a consultant. Which reminds me of this joke.

Once upon a time there was a shepherd tending his sheep at the edge of a country road. A brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee screeches to a halt next to him.

The driver, a young man dressed in a Brioni suit, Cerrutti shoes, Ray-Ban glasses, Jovial Swiss wrist watch and a BHS tie gets out and asks the shepherd: "If I guess how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?" The shepherd looks at the young man, then looks at the sprawling field of sheep and says: "Okay."

The young man parks the SUV, connects his notebook and wireless modem, enters a NASA site, scans the ground using his GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel tables filled with algorithms, then prints a 150 page report on his high tech mini printer. He then turns to the shepherd and says:"You have exactly 1,586 sheep here. "

The shepherd answers: "That's correct, you can have your sheep."The young man takes one of the animals and puts it in the back of his vehicle. The shepherd looks at him and asks: "Now, if I guess your profession, will you pay me back in kind?" The young man answers: "Sure." The shepherd says: "You are a consultant." "Exactly! How did you know," asks the young man? Very simple, answers the shepherd. "First, you came here without being called. Second, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already knew. Third, you do not understand anything about my business and I'd really like to have my dog back."

  • The Disney Plus password-sharing crackdown starts in June
  • You can, as long as you check in that device at the "home base" with your other devices every 30 days. At least that's what I remember from the fuzzy details.

We unsubscribed when it happened, only recently subbed again to watch some stuff, but I think we'll pause again since we're all caught up.

  • The Disney Plus password-sharing crackdown starts in June
  • Netflix absolutely enforced this in the US last year. I was sharing an account with my sister and we started getting notices about choosing a "home base" for our devices so Netflix could register it on their side to enforce if anyone outside of that initial IP began leveraging it.

  • Remote wake PC from Steam Deck?

Has anyone figured out a good solution to remote wake a PC from the Steam Deck? Seems silly this wasn't baked into the UI, considering this could be done from the Steam Link hardware back in the day.

Any Miku owners out there? It might be a client side update.

For those unaware, Miku baby cameras are now charging a monthly subscription for features that owners previously had access to such as remote access, live breathing monitor, nightly statistics, DVR of movement through the sleep. We originally paid $400 because it was advertised as a product that would not require a monthly subscription, and we've been using it that way for the past 14 months. As of this month, the only functionality that exists without a subscription is video monitoring, but only on your local network. Everything else requires you to pay.

Likely what led to this was due to the fact that they released a buggy firmware earlier this year that bricked everyone's cameras and they were on the hook to replace cameras. A few months after this they declared bankruptcy, only to be purchased by someone who has instituted the monthly subscription (rumors it's an investor of Miku trying to make their investment back).

I didn't get an email about this change, only saw some chatter on that other site about it. Anticipating this change, I blocked the app from updating on my Android phone and all apps from updating on our iPad. I know it was a long shot thinking that would work, betting that it would be a server side change as opposed to client side.

Looks like the change went live a day or so ago, people are pissed, however I still have access to features. Looks like the subscription block is a client side update based on the screen shots I've seen.

Long story short, how can I pull the .apk from my phone to distribute to others? Fuck this company.

EDIT: Figured it out, here's the update from May 2023 with features still intact - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sOOCY08j8nxvfXJd1SU7Kll-uMjiRftm/view?usp=drivesdk

EDIT 2 - I figure this company only has a few months left, we'll easily just transition to a cheap Ubiquiti camera that records on my local network. Fuck this remote recording approach.

    Android app has hardcoded DNS?

I have two pi-holes on my home network, but I'm noticing that when I open links using Connect's built in browser, I'm being served display ads when I normally wouldn't be. When I open the links with an external browser no ads are displayed. Is the app using a hardcoded DNS server when making requests to the links? Is there a way to stop that so it instead uses the DNS server configured on my home network?

Yes I realize I could set up a DNS Masq rule. I just didn't like how the reporting ended up being I pi-holes dashboard.
