  • Fun fact: Grizzlies and Polar Bears are the same species according to the Biological Species Concept.

Meaning they interbreed in the wild (somewhat rare), and produce viable offspring that can have babies as well.

We’re actually noticing this happening more and more with climate change. As Grizzly populations move further and further north, they’re encountering polar bears more often and are more likely to mate. Some scientists actually think within the next couple centuries due to arctic sea ice pretty much disappearing polar bears will either go extinct, or interbreed with grizzlies so much that there isn’t a “pure” polar bear left. Most likely a mix of both.

  • Because the neoliberal political elite expends much more effort de-fanging leftist movements and co-opting them than quelling the far right.

Notice how the major “leftist party” in much of the west is basically neoliberalism while maybe adding a little to welfare.

So yeah I think when inevitable discontent comes from inequality, the left has been defanged, it’s kind of inevitable the facists win.

  • He’s like a more moderated Francis. Very much a bureaucratic centrist within the Vatican, but he still supports a lot of the Francis style reforms.

So we’re not going back to papal conservatism, but it’s not like we’re going to push further than Francis.

So basically the old vatican with some vaguely liberal messages.

(In most contexts I’d hate him, but given the overton window of the catholic church well… he’s somewhat good).

  • This big time.

As a disabled person it’s quite horrifying to live under the poverty line barely alive and the only help the government will offer me is assisted suicide.

If living a dignified life isn’t an option, it’s almost forcing many of us to go the suicide route.

When what we’d rather have is more accommodations and support. And be able to enjoy our lives.

(As a recent example, the UK slashed disability income to far below the poverty line and is legalising assisted suicide for disabled people. What kind of message does that send?)

  • Because sometimes suicide can also be about making a statement.

“[X] had me suffering so bad I had no choice but to kill myself. I want people to understand how bad and unbearable it was to take me to this point. I want it to be in the news. I don’t want it to be swept under the rug.”

Also consider the last thing something someone who’se in a position so bad they want to die, and often who feels completely abandoned by society and “the system”, is to start a grueling bureaucratic procedure. To have to face their friends and family and explain they want to die… etc.

Sometimes it’s the easier way to end the suffering quicker.

  • Yeah. I refuse to give cuts to amazon, spotify, netflix etc.

If I pirate something from a not super rich artist and I really enjoy it. I’ll send them an email and propose to transfer them some money to support them. I don’t want spotify or amazon or google taking a cut.

  • Tusk is the classic, centrist who puts off the far right for a little bit but doesn’t actually fix most of the glaring problems so the far right will win within the next couple election cycles anyways.

See: Macron, Biden, Starmer, Carney, Albanese.

Neoliberal centrists who dont dare tackle the big issues.

  • I’ve had the same problem. Like books I genuinely enjoy. Then I find the authors twitter or bluesky, the author is upper middle class, yet they demonise piracy and get super mad people would dare pirate their 25$ book.

    That just icks me.

Like their book was anticapitalist, but here they are blind to the fact some people can’t afford books and we shouldn’t be gatekeeping knowledge. Ewww.

  • Do you care more that a significant proportion of the population (0.5% of people depending on statistics) can be comfortable and fit into categories without being discriminated and thus have a community and do sports.

Or do you care more about who wins a medal at the olympics?

Essentially, do you care more about protecting medals or protecting people?

  • The point is a sort of doublethink.

Where in private you celebrate Luigi for what we think he did. But in Public we pretend he didn’t do it to help create a narrative to protect him from the police state.
