Signal on Linux
  • Personally I don’t understand the large warnings on flatpaks built by others, by that logic you should get a warning sign each time you download from the Ubuntu community apt repository.

OSS is built out of love, and to me this warns guilty before proven innocent.

  • As a maintainer of another unofficial flatpak:

You can always check the source code of the flatpak (code that downloads the dev then runs it inside the flatpak sandbox) here: https://github.com/flathub/org.signal.Signal

Any of the current maintainers could add malicious code, but that would ruin their GitHub & by proxy:Twitter,LinkedIn credibility.

Flathub have final say on what is built and hosted on their flatpak repository (Flathub != Flatpak) and are able to remove versions at will.

  • Let me try to reply to your somewhat heated rebuttal, Last I used arch (that was manjaro 4years ago; endeavorOS 3 years ago) so yes quite a while back I confess, I encountered multiple issues updating some of these listed below:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/vba6nd/arch_no_updates_since_may/

    https://forum.manjaro.org/t/root-tip-mitigate-and-prevent-gpgme-error-when-syncing-your-system/84700

    NVidea

As I updated sporadically around once every 1-4 months with little time to spare for system maintenance and the prime requirement It Just Works™️ running Steam, in both cases eventually it didn’t cut it for me.

I only recently learned that updating without being subscribed to their newsletter is not recommended, none of the YouTubers or Arch enthusiasts I’ve come across warn about this.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/System_maintenance Read before upgrading the system Before upgrading, users are expected to visit the Arch Linux home page to check the latest news, or alternatively subscribe to the RSS feed or the arch-announce mailing list. When updates require out-of-the-ordinary user intervention (more than what can be handled simply by following the instructions given by pacman), an appropriate news post will be made.

  • I’m sorry but arch is a terrible choice for a first Linux OS: it breaks often, and has problems updating it if you don’t update regularly, (stuff only Linux Nerds overlook when advising an OS).

Go for something like; Linux mint, PopOS, Ubuntu

  • No, Okta, senior management, not an errant employee, caused you to get hacked
    1. Not necessarily 2fa only secures you from direct attacks to the google login, but attackers can gain access another way: session cookie stealing.
    2. 2fa only really exists because people aren’t using better & unique passwords
  • Sadly, cancelled my Apple One subscription.
    1. Looking at what you’d pay for 4tb of cloud storage and you’ll quickly find that return of investment
    2. That’s forgetting the additional advantages of faster LAN backups, hosting docker containers & includes a free tin foil hat
    3. If you look at the second hand market the prices are significantly lower (most people sell their NAS having upgraded to a larger model)
    4. Not stuck to a single company that can change prices later

  • Las Vegas police make arrest in bicyclist’s death after crash videos surface, 8 News Now investigation by: David Charns Posted: Oct 26, 2023 / 02:33 PM PDT Updated: Oct 26, 2023 / 04:14 PM PDT LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metro police made an arrest Thursday in a fatal crash, which killed a 32-year-old BMX champion, a week after the 8 News Now Investigators showed videos appearing to show the driver speeding.

Nathan “Nate” Miller died hours after a car crashed into him while he was riding a bike northbound on Nellis Boulevard near Tropicana Avenue in the southeast valley on Sept. 23, Las Vegas Metro police said.

Video appeared to show a car speeding and quickly changing lanes before crashing into Miller, killing him. The 8 News Now Investigators aired a report on Wednesday, Oct. 18, because at that point, the driver was not facing any charges.

Videos the 8 News Now Investigators obtained appeared to show the car jerking back and forth before colliding with Miller. The car then crashed into a fence and a parked vehicle, police said. Miller’s friends had contacted the 8 News Now Investigators asking why there were no apparent consequences.

Nathan Miller was killed when a driver hit him on Nellis Boulevard on Sept. 23, 2023. Miller died hours later in the hospital. (Nicole Miller) Officers arrested the driver, identified as Julius Hopkins, 32, on Thursday, they said. He faced charges of reckless driving resulting in death, child abuse or endangerment, and having no driver’s license, registration, or insurance, police said.

The crash report the 8 News Now Investigators obtained reveals an officer deemed Hopkins at fault for the crash, though “no enforcement action [was] taken.”

The officer noted on the report that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, however, there was no check box on the form for how the officer made that determination.

The crash report also listed the driver alone in the car, but a news release said the driver was with two passengers. The child endangerment charge was likely related to the child passenger.

  • Bottles Is Sick Of Downstream Linux Distro Packages

Bottles and it's developers are very much in favour of upstream packaging and flatpaks especially after the situation they dealt with because of broken outdated packaging coming from Fedora Linux

Q: Is PoE energy efficient inside your home?

Is PoE more efficient than plugging in adapters for each network device?

And at what scale does it start to matter?

From my perspective; I’m going for a 3 node mesh router, plus 2 switches, and was considering if in 5 years time the electricity difference would be less than the extra upfront cost. The absolute max length of cable would probably be around 30m
