  • All plants require different levels nutrients to grow. If the same plant is grown repeatedly in the same soil then the soil will run out of the nutrients that plant needs and growing that plant becomes difficult. By rotating through plants with different nutrient requirements, the soil can maintain a sustainable balance of nutrients.

We now use the scientific method to argue ideas, but in the past ideas could just be laughed at if people thought they sounded dumb. People laughed at ideas like the sun being the center of the solar system and doctors needing to wash their hands before surgery. Refusal to accept these ideas held humanity back from technological advancement.

  • In case some of y'all are still looking for a job
  • I heard it was a way to show how sorry you were for fucking something up or dishonouring your family. You'd present your severed pinky to your boss as an appology. Apparently it's not done much anymore. I've played all the Yakuza games so I'm basically an expert.

  • Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term?
  • American politicians mostly argue over issues as a way to earn votes. It's like the story of the young priest.

Every week he listens to the old priest talk about the church's roof and how badly it needs repairs and has been for years. He asks the congregation to give generously as the quotes to repair it have been quite high. The young priest decides to call around and eventually finds a religious contractor who agrees to repair the roof at a steep discount! The young priest walks into church one morning to see the old priest outside in shock that the roof has been fixed. The young priest proudly explains how he was finally able to fix the bad roof that had been a pain for years. The old priest says "You idiot! Now how will I get people to donate!?"

  • Is The Labor Movement Failing? with Hamilton Nolan [1:14:36)
  • Not sure if the youtube title was changed but it reads "Can Unions Make a Comeback? With Hamilton Nolan". A much less hostile title. The video is also over an hour long.

I only watched the first 15 minutes. They talk about how union support in the US is as high as it was in the 1950s but union membership is the lowest its ever been. In the 50s 1 in 3 US workers were a union member. It is now 1 in 10 despite 60% of workers having favourable views on unions. They talk about how this disparity could be with the major reason stated that companies have been making union busting a top priority causing it difficult for people to organize even if they support it.

  • Chinese Communist Party-linked network behind 'well-funded' anti-Israel campus protests, group says
  • Americans can only protest the actions of their own government. The US is sending humanitarian aid to Gaza and weapons to Isreal. Why would people protest over sending humanitarian aid? They want America to stop sending weapons to Isreal. How would you feel if Biden sent Hamas $15 billion in weapons?

  • Deactivating Facebook for just a few weeks reduces belief in fake news
  • Lemmy isn't really an echo chamber. It's like saying going over to a friends place is an echo chamber because you and your friend get along. There's nothing wrong with hanging out with people who share your values and beliefs.

The problem with social media are their algorithms. They aren't designed to connect you with like-minded people, but to keep you engaged. The content that keeps people engaged tends to be terrible content.

The recent "a man or a bear" trend is a perfect example. Algorithms love divisive content like that because it drives engagement, but it also leads to people getting really upset over nothing. Lemmy doesn't have any algorithms driving engagement so it doesn't have that problem.

  • Missing Posts and Comments - Lemmy Issue?

I've recently started using the Boost for Lemmy app on my phone and it's amazing. I was using Liftoff before but I'm switching over. However, I've noticed an issue. When I browse through communities using Liftoff I see a lot more posts and comments than when I use Boost.

I figured this was an issue with Boost at first, but when I used my computer to edit these screenshots I noticed the same thing happens in my browser!

Opening up https://lemmy.world/c/boostforlemmy I see all the posts that Liftoff shows. Of course I'm not logged in since my account is on Lemmy.ca.

When I log into Lemmy.ca and view the community though: https://lemmy.ca/c/boostforlemmy@lemmy.world I only see the posts that Boost shows! Many posts are now missing!

I figured this is an issue with Lemmy.ca blocking stuff. But wait! The most recent post (titled "Bug: Hiding all read posts also hides...") has the URL https://lemmy.world/post/6954944 which, of course, does not allow me to comment on since I'm not logged in. If I search for that post through Lemmy.ca I find the equivalent post with the URL: https://lemmy.ca/post/7377534 which now allows me to comment on it through my Lemmy.ca account.

Does any one know what's going on here? Clearly Lemmy.ca can "see" all the posts in the BoostForLemmy community on Lemmy.world. Even Liftoff manages to show all of them! So why does my browser and Boost for Lemmy not show everything unless I specifically search it out?
