The Dynasty Cube - Magic Cube Draft Meets Fantasy Sports Dynasty League

It’s that time of year again.

The weather is getting warmer, and your friends are all planning vacations. Sure, you could just go to FNM - or \shudder\ spin up Arena - to get your Magic fix, but it's just not the same.

You love the social aspect of Magic. Thrills are hard to come by these days and winning a close matchup against a friend or talking about the latest spoilers with them is still one of them.

But half the people you used to play with have sold their collections off. The ones still playing are often just too busy to come around for a few games anymore.

You think back on simpler times.

Happier days.

Days when Magic: The Gathering was the only thing you and your friends could think about because it was so damn fun. It was social. It was creative. but above all, it was fun.

.

..

We have what you need.

What you crave.

THE DYNASTY CUBE

What is The Dynasty Cube?

The Dynasty Cube is a self-correcting, draft league in which Teams draft through the history of Magic, beginning with ABUR (the original four Magic sets from 1993-1994), and cumulatively adding newer sets in subsequent seasons.

Drafts are done “rotisserie”-style, then matches are scheduled throughout the following weeks to determine THE CHAMPION.

After The Championship match, cards that were drafted become harder to retain in the next draft, the next Magic set is added to the draft pool, and players draft again from the new pool of cards.

As the pool of cards evolves over time, the rules of the game may evolve as well. In The Off Season between The Championship match and the following draft, players will vote to enact new rules to The Draft or to the game itself.

Why is it called a “cube”?

“Cube” is a limited format that is typically curated by a single person choosing what cards are in the environment. In The Dynasty Cube, curation will occur as a product of how The Teams interact with the cards, combined with new sets being introduced each Season.

Teams? Isn’t Magic usually a 1v1 game?

In The Dynasty Cube participants are separated into one of 8 Teams of their choice. Teams can contain any number of members, however only one Pilot is designated to play a given match for that team. Teams will also designate a Captain who is the sole arbiter of any decisions made by that Team between matches, such as draft picks, trades, and league votes. It is expected - but not necessary - that a Team’s Captain consults their members to determine what decisions will be made.

The Dynasty Cube as a concept was heavily influenced by Fantasy Football and Blaseball, which sadly ended last year. Anyone familiar with Blaseball will notice some similarities as The League progresses.

Drafting through the history of magic in the format of a fantasy sports dynasty league!

Introducing The Dynasty Cube

The Dynasty Cube is a long-form draft league that allows you to draft through the history of Magic in the format of a fantasy sports dynasty league.

At the moment, I've just finished spinning up a Discord server to host and manage the league through - if anyone is interested in being sent an invite link, please DM me!

Here are some of the finer details of how the league works:

Drafts are done in a "season" - a draft plus all matches for a given draft.

Teams are allotted a certain number of "points" to spend on the cards they draft to build their deck for the season.

Each card starts with a point value that goes up each time it is drafted or kept into another season, or loses points if it's never drafted.

After the draft, players may also make trades with other players. Card values do not change with trades, and both cards and future draft picks may be traded.

After completing a draft season, each player may designate any number of cards from their pool as "keepers". In the next draft, keepers will be automatically drafted for that team rather than being available to the other teams.

The current list includes most draft-worthy cards from Alpha through Legends.

Each season, the next chronological set/product will be added to the pool for the next draft, excluding cards that are deemed problematic to the format. If adding this set does not add a sufficient number of cards that 8 players can draft 45 cards (360 cards available worth no more than 1 point), the next set/product will also be added to the pool.

If you had to give one piece of advice that is pretty much universally applicable, what would it be?
  • Never take time for granted - expect you'll have less of it than you want or need.

It can really help with getting priorities straight - whether that's with work or with your personal life. Where is it exactly you want to spend the most valuable and limited resource you have? Your time?

  • Do I need a new phone for 2FA? (Tad Long)
  • Any company taking 2FA seriously will either compensate you for the requirements to fulfill that security, or provide you with the devices necessary. I used to work at Duo. I currently work for another company that does more or less the same thing. Your company's security team will do whatever it takes to get you compliant because not doing that is on them and not you.

It's honestly wild for a company to allow an employee to be on the verge of locked out of critical services and not be resolving that on their own. They have the metrics in duo to be able to see that you have no viable device to 2FA with.

Is there much difference between Stellar and Star san? How's the StellarSan stuff so cheap?
  • EDIT: I've just done some quick research and it seems like stellarsan is a locally made equivalent to starsan in Australia. It's probably so much cheaper just because it's not an import.

Starsan is a recognizable trusted brand. I know exactly what I'm getting when I buy starsan. I have never before heard of stellarsan and cannot vouch for how well it works. I will say that the fact they've specifically chosen a name that could feasibly be confused with the established brand does not bode well for their own legitimacy.

That's the reason for the price difference I would guess. Name recognition vs taking a gamble on some unknown brand

If you must buy online because you don't have a local homebrew store, I recommend only doing so through a reputable seller that specializes in brewing supplies. Amazon is not ideal, and I'm not sure if kegland can be trusted as I've never heard of them. Try to make connections with other brewers in your area and see where they are ordering things from. Sadly, from what I've heard Australia is not the easiest place to source...well, anything from lol

  • Lay them on me
  • Honestly, homebrewing becoming a mainstream hobby would be pretty great, I'm always interested in trying a beer someone else brewed and it would probably make sourcing ingredients a lot easier if there was enough of a demand to necessitate a local shop in my area.

  • ‘X-Men ’97’ Creator Beau DeMayo Fired Weeks Before Premiere
  • No trace of any reason for the firing to be found in the article, both sides at the time of publishing have been silent about it.

Strange. Hoping it's something shitty Marvel/Disney did, would be disappointing to hear DeMayo did something worthy of being dropped suddenly like this...

  • Unsure of the make/model, received for Christmas 2022 and was bought from a Camden Market stall in London. Absolutely love the wood/leather look.

It's my first automatic watch. Had been working great until a few months ago, now it seems to struggle to keep a charge and occasionally sticks even when it should still have a charge. Need to find a place to take it in, sadly I've now moved from London to Chicago or I'd have just brought it back to the seller.

Now I hear you, you want a real alternate win condition, not just relying on Etrata to do all the work - well I've got just the thing for you.

You hear of Treasure tokens? How about makin a whole mess o tokens? And then winning because you have SO MANY TOKENS?

What that? "I know where you're going with this, and [[Revel in Riches]] is not good enough to win against T1-2 decks in standard."

That's where you're wrong my friend! With enough planeswalkers, counterspells, and board wipes, I'm here to tell you that you can win with anything.

This deck has SIX board wipes and another THREE in the board! We've got SEVEN counterspells, including the on-brand [[Spell Swindle]] for those sweet, sweet Treasure tokens.

You know what my favorite thing is about Treasure tokens? You can play ANY color! That's right, we're running FIVE off-color planeswalkers to cast off those treasure tokens!

Fool your opponent into thinking you're just a run-of-the-mill control deck, then surprise them with your Revel in Riches out of nowhere!

When this deck gets going, you'll always have counter magic up to keep yourself protected, and you'll always have a way to reset the board when your opponent lands a spooky creature!

I can tell those decks weren't quite spicy enough for you - you, you're a mage of class! You deserve the best! You deserve to punish your opponent simply by drawing cards!

Let's start off with the centerpiece of the deck, [[Satyr Enchanter]]. With this guy, you're gonna be drawing cards like you wouldn't believe - there's a grand total of TWENTY-TWO enchantments ready to generate real value, and another NINE enchantments in the board.

Between [[Ixalan's Binding]] and [[Seal Away]] you'll have no trouble dealing with your opponent's threats while drawing more and more cards.

What are we going to do with all that card draw? Well my friend, we're going to eviscerate our opponent using [[Psychic Corrosion]] of course!

Not drawing enough cards by just casting enchantments? Well that's what [[Patient Rebuilding]] and powerhouse [[Nezahal]] are for! Draw cards forever!
