Committing suicide?
Yes that's me.
Yeah that's not really how lemmy or any anonymous platform works really.
If you espouse a position that others disagree with they will tell you.
If your position is ridiculous then you will be ridiculed.
Personally, I find Lemmy to be a lot less respectful in this way than other platforms. As I said in my earlier comment any opinion that is less than absolutely supportive of the common opinions is heavily ostracized.
A good example would be the situation with Luigi Mangioni. The vast majority of users want mangioni to walk free, and as a result there's blind support for "jury nullification". This is obviously a complex issue with legal, social, and historic ramifications, but any opinions other than breathless support for jury nullification in his case will be heavily ostracized.
No one said you used the video to estimate, I just assumed that no one would be stupid enough to think that a weather website can tell you the windspeed of that particular gust at that particular location.
The pilot was experiencing the weather because he was physically there in person, not watching a video.
I'm genuinely curious to know why do you think the pilot was filming?
Yeah I'm kinda speechless. It doesn't bear thinking about but I kinda wonder how aware she was of the consequences of what she was doing.
I genuinely don't know if you're trying to be sarcastic.
The linked article mentions the wind.
You can't estimate wind speed from this video.
None of the passengers mentioned mechanical problems.
It's reasonable to conclude that the guy was filming the landing because the weather was particularly inclement.
I have relatives living in the US who are Trump supporters.
I would struggle to talk to them about anything even unpolitical now.
Yeah so I have a son and daughter who are too young to encounter this stuff but I'm definitely concerned about it. I don't have any experience at all in navigating this type of dynamic.
I suspect that in the coming years I'm going to realise just how difficult it is to maintain a relationship with your kids where you have some level of influence while simultaneously earning some level of respect, camaraderie, kinship, and ultimately have them share things with you. It kinda sounds impossible honestly.
I know that the fitness angle is also a recruitment tool used by these organisations. You know, come to the gym, learn to work out, learn kickboxing or whatever, acquire role models, be influenced.
I guess one strategy is to encourage relationships with better role models so they have a point of reference when they encounter someone with ulterior motives and differing views.
Yeah so you'll generally find lemmy users to be quite hostile to your political position. I'm grown up enough not to be "hostile" but to be frank I think your voting choices are very poorly considered.
To your broader question. Lemmy is just like any other platform. If you say silly things people will rebut you. There is no respect for contrary opinions.
I've found that lemmy communities tend to be very homogeneous and in many threads if you offer any insights which are not breathless support you'll be heavily downvoted and get vitriolic responses, or banned.
For example, saying anything critical of China in a .ml thread will result in a ban.
I think you're probably right.
Tricky landing in shitty weather. Just filming to share in group chat as in "look at this shitty weather we have to take off in". Something like that.
I don't think it's surprising at all that you've never heard of a Dyson sphere. It's not a very popular idea even in science fiction.
Yeah actually just last year some researchers found an ancient branch of the Nile running through the giza plateau which explains the location of a lot of monuments:
It would really suck to see your kid get caught up in this.
Yeah, just like during the campaign the left can't even agree on what we're supposed to be doing.
Really cool but ... yeah.
I sold mine and don't plan on getting another for the foreseeable.
I like my roadie and I like my MTB, having a hybrid was unnecessary and frustrating because it had some of the limitations of both formats.
That said, they might be ideal for some people. Kind of an all rounder that's a bit more serious than a commuter.
I'm not sure about your math really.
My point though, is that weekly sales won't dip at all, you'll just buy things before or after.
Yeah it's no problem here in my city in West Aus, we never installed any bike lanes in the first place so no need to rip them out!
In all seriousness though, there is some cycling infrastructure but it's really very limited. No "network" per se.
For example, there's only one section of dedicated bike path in the whole city. Dedicated as in segregated from pedestrians and other traffic. It runs for about 500m. Cyclists need to cross about 5 side roads and the bike path is terminated before and after them. It's an absurdity really.
Regardless, when it was installed it was met with such vehement and vociferous outcry that the local government dare not install any additional infrastructure.
No it's not. A general rabble isn't going to achieve anything because they're not asking for anything. Morale is low and participants are easily disuaded because they can see they're not achieving anything. No one wants to risk physical harm or incarceration for a cause that just doesn't really exist.
Yeah that's a really good point.
The general consensus seems to be that doing something is better than doing nothing.
I really disagree though. After a few failed attempts people will lose heart and get in line.
There seems to be half a dozen different protests now too, all on different days with no cohesive objectives
