  • I think they will simply get burned as they are not designed for radiation levels 2x or even 10x of normal sunlight. (10x would be a huuuge lens) The cells in the paper are actually fucking tiny, the lenses apparently create an area with 1000x the energy density as normal sunlight, so these cells are just completely different from normal PV cells. If you focused that much energy on a normal PV panel it would just melt or evaporate.

    The single cell–lens unit uses a solar cell with a chip area of 885 × 685 μm2 and an active area of 585 × 585 μm2

So the actual cell is roughly 0.6mm by 0.6mm

  • Not at all no. This used to be a sort of self regulating system. Peoples ability to go fast with muscles alone usually goes away around the same point where their cognitive abilities become a hazard to the rest of traffic. The difference is that most young people could easily go 18mph or more while old people wouldnt even get past 10 without e-bikes. Basically e-bikes allow people to go beyond their limits. While that sounds cool, in this case it isnt.

  • Yeah this proposal is reasonable. I wouldnt want to share my bikepath with old people driving more than 25kmh. They just dont have the reaction time to safely drive at speeds like that and even that is actually waaay to fast for the oldest. If you wanna go faster, use your muscles and/or drive on the road.

  • I dont want to relativize violence too much, but with these kinds of incidents in a political context, its always best to think about it in a "statistics" sort of way. Just in the short time of these unrests there have probably been 10 incidents like this with Spanish born perpetrators that got zero press coverage. People give individual events like this waaay too much sway over their thinking. Its bad that it happened, but its also not out of the ordinary whatsoever.

  • Well no, those things wouldnt happen, but yes the response is much too muted. Realistically the Trump admins response will be "Well what were they doing there in the terrorist country in the first place" in typical victim blaming fashion.
