Final Fantasy
- Signing up and posting to c/FinalFantasy
Recently lemmy.world admins have changed their policy for signups to their instance due to spam. While this is understandable and I don’t want to get into the details of it here, the policy change does mean that it may make it a little more difficult for new people to sign up and contribute to c/FinalFantasy.
So here’s a few quick pointers for any new people wanting to join in with posts and discussions.
Signing up
I’d still recommend signing up to lemmy.world if you don’t mind waiting for approval, but if you’d rather not do that, there are alternatives.
As Lemmy is built with fediverse in mind, it means you can sign up to any instance of Lemmy and have access to most other instances. Here are a few recommended alternatives where you can sign up:
A full list can be found on the Lemmy website.
Interacting with c/FinalFantasy

- On the Mechanical Richness of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Last year I wrote a post here complaining about the mechanical flatness of FFXVI. Playing FFVII Rebirth I could not help but compare it’s delightful mechanical richness to 16’s flatness, so I decided to write a post celebrating it.
First of all, there is the materia system. It’s such a powerful game mechanic, I can’t help but wonder why so few games have copied the core concept. The magic comes from three parts.
- Reifying powers into concrete items.
- Giving these items their own development paths.
- Making some of the powers meta-powers, changing the way others behave.
These three things together open a combinatorial explosion of character builds that is fun and intuitive to navigate, while feeling much more organic than a sphere grid like system. Decoupling the powers from characters lets you try out a maxed materia with entirely different characters. The meta-powers increase the size of the possibility space multiplicatively.
The materia system also interacts with other mechanics, making all of them richer. In my post about 16 I complained about how boring the weapons were. There were two stats, but they only changed in unison, making all weapons simple upgrades of the previous one. Rebirth takes full advantage of the separate Physical and Magical attack stats, but the materia makes things even more interesting. Do you want many slots, but a weaker weapon? Fewer slots, but more connections? All interesting choices, making most weapons occasionally relevant throughout the game.
And all mechanisms in the combat system benefit from the tweaks materia enables. You get the traditional fun with elements, but materia enriches blocking and character switching systems just as well.
And the combat system in itself has so much to offer. It’s still a bit slow for my taste (in the OG you get to enter ATB commands all the time, in Re* you have to wait for ages; I’m not that entertained by being able to pit pat tinsy bits of damage & dodge while I wait), but it’s definitely not mechanically flat. The way synergy abilities give you more to do while waiting for ATB and synergy skills incentivize switching between characters makes the combat even better than in Remake.
I do have a couple complaints, though. It is annoying how long limit breaks take. Way too many times I started my limit break not even half way to the stagger time of a boss and the stagger ended before the final blow. I even died to Sepiroth once, with a millimeter of his life remaining, because of this.
Also, Sepiroth is way too weak in the Nibelheim flashback. I suppose they wanted to keep the gameplay interesting for the action game nerds, but it fails to deliver the impact of the original. It was brilliant how they showed Sepiroth’s power with game mechanics by making him one-shot everything. In Rebirth, he is hardly stronger than Cloud. (Yes, his numbers are bigger, but with action combat you don’t really have time to see them. He does not feel different.) Sepiroth’s Limit Break, (Limit Break!) did not even finish off the flashback boss.
I also wish the Relationship Level affected the combat. It could eg. make synergy skills with the corresponding character cheaper. But it’s cool that the connection does go the other way.
These are minor nitpicks. As a whole FFVII Rebirth has embarrassingly rich mechanics, well tied to the story. I do hope they give us properly overpowered nonsense in part three, to keep in line with the original. Perhaps gated to be useless until you earn the second star, that was a fun OG idea they didn’t use yet.

i had to share because i was rather proud of myself. i know its probably nothing special to most people but i went through the whole rise of the fallen dlc the other day without the timely assistance ring and im super happy.
i went through the other hand with it because i struggled with the timing and coordination but with each major boss i kept getting better and better at hitting the precision dodges :)
i stíll died a couple of times but i was so happy with myself for not putting it back on! :)

- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Spoilers
With the impending release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, there could be a lot of discussion around the game. To ensure that we remain fair and open for people who either are still playing the game upon release or have yet had chance to play it, we’re going to introduce a period of embargo on new threads.
These rules for new threads will only apply to VII Rebirth and all other games will still be allowed to be discussed.
This will be how it works. Separate “Megathreads” will be created for the demo and final launch respectively. These threads will be your place to discuss the games and where spoilers will be permissible. If you do not want to see spoilers, avoid these threads, they will be labelled with
[Spoilers]
. These will be in place until 4 weeks after the release of the game, after which any new threads with spoilers should be labelled as such with[Spoiler]
or[Spoilers]
. Do not post spoilers in the titles of your posts, even if you do have the relevant labels. Please be respectful of other gamers and community members during this time. Normal rules will still apply.
What if I post anyway?
Posts will be removed and repeat offenders will be deemed as flagrantly breaking rules and banned for increasing amounts of times. This includes with comments that aim to spoil the game for others.
We already know what happens, we’ve played the OG!
This is a new game where we’re not even certain how close it sticks to the OG game. There are going to be differences and new story elements regardless. We don’t even know how that scene will unfold.
TL;DR:
Embargo is in place from today until EOD 28th March to avoid spoilers. Megathreads will be created for demo and final release. From 29th March onwards, spoiler tags are required.
We may update this thread with more clarification and information in the future

- Sephiroth's plans?
I was thinking how people are upset at Remake as they feel it deviates too much from og. The creators have said that it will remain true to the original but maybe they weren't referring to the ideas but to the core themes of og. Seeing Sephiroth introduced so early in FF7R, the whispers, different worlds etc. It got me thinking about what Sephiroth said at the Temple of the Ancients. He said "It's simple. Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury... What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet? Think how much energy would be gathered! Ha ha ha. And at the center of that injury, will be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with all the energy of the Planet, I will become a new life form, a new existence.Melding with the Planet... I will cease to exist as I am now... Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every soul." Remember he is in-between alive/dead as he has not be absorbed by the lifestream. The planet uses that to heal itself. If he casts Meteor he kills two birds with one stone. He kills people and mortally wounds the planet. When the planet goes to heal itself he will absorb the life energy. The worlds merging benefits him as maybe it takes two planets worth of life energy to become a god.

- [FFXIV] Tokyo Fan Fest 2024
Today is the day for a number of Final Fantasy fans, no doubt many of which are part of this community. So here is a thread for those watching and wanting to discuss the event and what is shown here.
What's Fan Festival?
For those not familiar or players of FFXIV, before the launch of every new Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Square Enix hosts three in-person events across the NA, EU, and JP regions. These events bring together players (Warriors of Light) from across the globe to celebrate the game and learn about what's coming next. Often hosting keynotes, cosplay events and live gigs by The Primals - a band led by Masayoshi Soken and includes translator Michael-Christopher Koji Fox.
The three events are hosted in three key places, with different countries being the host for each EU event. This time around, these are the locations where they're happening:
NA: July 28-29, 2023 at the Las Vegas Convention CenterEU: Oct 21-22, 2023 at the ExCeL London Convention Center- JP: Jan 7-8, 2024 at the Tokyo Dome
Fan Festival Schedules
You can find the schedule for each day on this page: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/0e4765e138f0823a63bec280840bab52066be87f
Unlike EU and NE events, the JP events will be presented in Japanese only! However the opening keynote will be translated to English.
