> ! > > ! > > ! > > ! > > After developing wrist issues and plateauing at 65 WPM on traditional keyboards, I decided it was time to improve my typing form. My technique had always been a hybrid of touch typing and hunt-and-peck, heavily favoring my left hand while only using 2-3 fingers on my right. > > Twenty plus years of ingrained typing habits needed a complete reset, and what better way than switching to an entirely new format? The ergonomic mechanical keyboard scene had caught my eye since college, which led me to the 42-key split Corne. > > I opted for a pre-built model, and despite the current learning curve (hovering around 15 WPM), I couldn't be happier with the decision. The only minor issue is with the tenting stands I added - they tend to slide during pinky key presses. While I have a few spare double-sided adhesive pads to experiment with, I'm still working on finding the optimal tenting solution through trial and error. > > Choc brown switches > Sculpted keycaps > ZMK firmware > > Unfortunately, I'm already eyeing other ergo mechs like dactyl, totem, and the KLOR polydactyl but I'm going to try to restrain myself, at least for a few months 🤣

- Looking for a 100%, ISO kit for a budget work keeb
I hope someone can point me in the right direction.
I'm looking to build a budget keyboard for work that is rather quiet.
What I have:
- Gazzew Boba U4s
- pbtfans WOB keycaps
What I need is a kit that is:
- barebones or cheap enough for it not to matter
- full-size or 96% (lots of numbers to put into the computer)
- ISO
- hot-swap
- available, no group buys or pre-orders
- on the quiet side (I got killmat and other tools to dampen if necessary)
The Keychron V series might be an option, but I was wondering, if there were better less known options.
Thanks for reading.

- QMK layer question
I do my keyboard configuration with Vial, which may or may not be relevant.
I am unable to momentarily switch layers from a particular layer, and I'm looking for tips.
I have a base Dvorak layer, with all of my layer switches as tap-dance keys under my left hand, with holds triggering a momentary layer switch and all of the other keys under my right hand: a layer for punctuation, a layer for numbers, a layer for function keys, for WM navigation, for tmux navigation... 9 layers in total. It all works well.
Recently, I started playing Factorio again, so I set up a combo switch to the 9th layer, which is bog-standard QWERTY, it being easier to just learn new muscle memory than to reconfigure all 9,000 Factorio key bindings for Dvorak. But now entering numbers was a PITA because my keyboard has no number keys, so I have to switch back to the base layer to use the MO binding to switch to my number layer.
Eventually, I decided this was too much trouble, so I created a tap-dance MO binding for the same physical key in the QWERTY layer... but it doesn't work, in that the layer is not switched to the number layer - except for "0": that combination works. The fact that one key works makes me think it is actually sorta switching layers? But all of the other keys just enter the un-switched QWERTY keys.
I've tried setting the trigger key to a different one, with identical results. All of the keys on the left hand (and under the trigger key) are KC_TRNS on the number layer, so in both cases I've tried the trigger key is KC_TRNS on the number layer. I have not yet tried duplicating the number layer and using that instead.
Does the target layer (the number layer) have to be a layer number greater than the starting layer? Number layer is layer 4, and QWERTY is 9 - do I need to move 4 to 10? Is there some other, common, issue I'm encountering?
- Are linear switches bad for typing?
I'll preface this by saying I've only used cherry mx brown switches before.
Recently I decided to try Akko Silver linear switch, and while it feels great when I'm gaming, for work I've been getting the tips of my fingertips hurting. Is it just me or are they not for this sort of thing?

- Keyboard that can handle falling to the floor?
For reasons not relevant here I have been using my computer mostly from bed for years now, with the keyboard on my stomach or, when I'm not actively using it, on my side, still on the mattress, or on the floor propped up against the bed frame.
Problem is that apparently it has fallen from that position one too many times and now a group of keys only reacts to key presses if I'm lucky (probably a broken trace somewhere that can still conduct if the stars align to make the broken ends meet).
Given this accidential abuse, it has survived remarkably well. It was a Roccat Skeltr that a former roommate didn't need anymore and gave me when my previous keyboard died, some 8 years ago or so.
Unfortunately, I can't just buy the same thing as it stopped being produced years ago (I tried years ago when the headphone jack on it died).
So my question is, does anyone know of a similarly sturdy keyboard or one that's even sturdier? ISO 105 if possible, either with de_ch labels or else with no labels. Function keys for volume and media control would be nice, but not necessary.
---
I once tried making my own (wanted to swap the positions of numblock and arrows/Ins/Home/etc.), but soldering the PCB was such a disaster that it was threatening to break just from mechanical stress between faceplate, key switches and PCB alone, and finding a 3D printer capable of printing 45-50cm wide prints for the case in any maker space in the region was a bust.

- I made my own pcb to "un-south" my Keychron v6
I was initially excited about my Keychron V6 keyboard, I was looking forward to a thockier keyboard and wanted the customizability with qmk. The V6 seemed like a good match. But after unboxing it, I realized that the south-facing LEDs weren't ideal. I had just purchased Razer PBT keycaps, which I loved, but they didn't work at all with the LEDs and the escaping light underneath just blinded me.
I tried to make the setup work with custom keycaps from fkcaps (https://fkcaps.com/custom/5ELZPQ). While they were cool, they weren't the same as double-shot PBT keys. The setup wasn't ideal but I just stuck with it.
When I saw a YouTube video about building a keyboard with KiCad, I was inspired to try it myself. I used an ATmega32U, because I thought it would be easier to integrate, but it did have it's challenges: limited I/O meant I had to sacrifice the layout switch, and my matrix is best described as "tortuous". Despite a few errors on my PCB (a group of LEDs were not connected and I completely missed the holes for a stabilizer), the final PCB works amazingly well.
I've added a few photos below showcasing my setup before PCB assembly. You can see the light issues under the keys and how the laser etching from fkcaps isn't very durable.
EDIT: I've published the files to github in case anyone wants to have a look: V6 conversion
- What's the history of the "meh" key?
Well bite my shiny metal ass - how is there no wikipedia entry for "meh key"? They have alt key, control key, and even super key, but no meh key. I'm curious if the meh key came from a specific keyboard or what the origins are.

- Barebones kit that offers a non-wireless hotswap board?
Due to some unique circumstances I am currently looking for a keyboard or barebones kit that offers a non-wireless board that is also hotswap.
It seems though, that most wired only boards tend to also be solder boards, and I don't have the equipment (or patience) to work with that.
Do you know if there's any boards out there that offer this sort of combo?

"DEEJAY"
- the best first split keyboard
I want to try split keyboard, but don't know how to choose. I can build it myself. So I'd rather want a cheap one.
- Work in Progress: Handwired keyboard with a big dumb button
Mom, can we have battleship?
We have battleship at home.
The battleship at home...
Okay, so technically this battleship is still in drydock, but I soldered 117 keys/buttons. I get to put the keycaps on early if I want!
- FC660C - full disassembly - how bad is it?
I have an FC660C which I love, and really has been my endgame board. I have literally not bought another keyboard since picking this up however many years ago. (Well, technically not true, but the only thing I bought after that was an FC980C to use at work, and that was because I wanted something as nice as the 660C to use while I was there.)
However, it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned in all the time I've owned it. I've taken most of the caps off and cleaned under them a couple times, and I've opened the bottom of the case once or twice, but I haven't done a full disassembly, haven't even considered lube, haven't pulled caps for the stabilizer keys, etc.
Some things are getting a little squeaky, and I really want to give it a deep clean. (and maybe a lube)
My fears are: Screwing up the stabilizers (I have fully disassembled a couple cherry MX boards before, but I'm not clear how different or more delicate this is likely to be, and it's been awhile), and screwing up/losing all (or any of) those little springs and the domes.
I've checked out a few videos over the years, but am still just a little nervous about doing it.
Can anyone who has done it convince me it's not that bad, or warn me away from trying? 😁
Bonus question: If I end up in there anyway, any recommended extra steps to take?
- Qazimodo design revisions
I mentioned in a previous post that I made a few design changes to the Qazimodo case and wanted to highlight those changes.
New vs old design photos here.
- Removed the visible seam between the top and bottom of the case. Now the bottom is inserted into the top. This helps a ton with alignment which was a bit of an issue with the first iteration and it helps smooth out the curve.
- USB port improvements. The first USB port was pretty small and didn’t work with some cables. It also didn’t flow smoothly with the curve.
- Doubled the number of bottom screws to help prevent pinging and make things more sturdy.
