lemmy.ml meta
- Lemmy.ml will be down for ~30m today as we do some upgrades.
Just to give everyone a heads up.
- Has lemmy.ml been slower to load and make posts/comments for anyone else lately?
Over the past few days, it seems like things have suddenly gotten slower on lemmy.ml specifically. Loading other instances websites seems to be a lot faster for me. Haven't seen any one else talk about it, so wasn't sure if it's just me
EDIT: Huh, right as I posed this, things seemed to suddenly get faster. Not sure if something was restarted or something like that
- User account application rejection
Heya, I am trying to create a second account for managing a community of the same name.
Are user application rejections accompanied by an email?
- Posting takes too long?
Starting today, I noticed that posting a comment takes upwards of 2-3 minutes until it's committed (the "reply" button is turning round and round for a long time). Is there something wrong with the servers or some sort of moderation? Not sure what's going on or why.
- Expectations, Censorship, and The Instance
Hello! I'm relatively new to the Fediverse, and still getting to know how it all works as a long-time lurker from Reddit. I've noticed that some posts and comments have censorship, where the b-word, r-word, and others are replaced with "removed" regardless of context. I was wondering if that is a setting I missed, or determined by being on the *.ml instance, or otherwise. Additionally, I've noticed that I don't have access to the same communities as my friends on *.world, and was curious if there was a list of differences or communities that might be censored for some reason. Any tips on where to go to figure this out would be super appreciated!
- Worldnews .ml modding is on par with reddit's censorship
I know that lemmy's moto is if you don't like it here make your own, but for communities with big sub numbers and where current event discussions happens. banning controversial political opinions is not what I would have expected from the fediverse after having left corporate media, which could be excused for having to answer to investors and what not!
After I got a comment banned for what I think is nothing else but controversial, where it received quite the same amount of upvotes and downvotes, I took a look at that community's mod log, and there is nothing to be cheerful about. the same reddit mods have made it to the fediverse and are trying to turn it into the same hive mind other social media are, it is a shame it is turning out to this.
- Appealing the ban of yogthos@lemmy.ml from worldnews@lemmy.ml due to "spam"
According to the modlog for !worldnews@lemmy.ml, @yogthos@lemmy.ml (display name: ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆) was banned by the instance admin @davel@lemmy.ml on March 20, 2024 08:52:45PM for "spam". Upon examining the most recent 119 posts in that community (6 pages from https://lemmy.ml/c/worldnews?dataType=Post&sort=New to https://lemmy.ml/c/worldnews?dataType=Post&pageCursor=Pc99aa0&sort=New), I have found that yogthos is indeed the top poster in this past week, contributing to 19 out of 119 or almost 16% of the posts, with the second most posts coming from @naturalgasbad@lemmy.ca at 15 posts.
Just being the top poster over the past week or so doesn't make someone a spammer, if we examine yogthos' recent 19 posts, we can find that they vary in topics and sources. I hope that davel or someone can explain this ban or undo it if it was a mistake.

- I heard that images can't be deleted from Lemmy instances, due to bugs and various implementation details. Here is an image that has been deleted from the internet, to see if that fixes it.
Edit: I was searching for a "meta" community, since this is a post on Lemmy about current Lemmy limitations... But it turns out that this might very well be off topic. I apologise if it is the case... I would gladly take suggestions on what community would be best for this post, BTW.
- What copyright license is content posted on this instance (or Lemmy in general) assumed to be?
Since Reddit is now explicitly planning to sell user generated content for AI training. It got me thinking about Lemmy.
What license are posts and comments assumed to be under on this instance? Is there an overarching lemmy policy (there doesn't seem to be)?
Is it down to the user to specify, if so how?
Are there any downsides with adopting a Creative Commons or other copyleft license?
- Can we get federating ips/ip-bans?
This might spark outrage but can we note ips to accounts so if they mass register, other servers get notified through federation and deactivate those (new) accounts or block registration at all?
The idea would be:
- I register an acocunt, my ip gets noted, I assume they federate immediately?
- i register another account on the same ip since no relog/isp change happened, my ip came through federation, i dont get blocked since this could have been a mistake
- i register another account, gets blocked for mass registration
The obvious way around this would be changing your ip constantly but its at least uncomfortable for an attacker.
Now comes the kicker:
- I start spamming, get banned
- I spam with another account, same ip, same ban reason on another server, ip ban gets triggered since they’re close in time
- ip ban shuts me down for 12 hrs? i will change the ip anyway but it slows down the attack again and makes automation hard.
Feel free to poke holes in this. i‘m trying to find solutions, not be right. But please be gentle, I‘m trying to help.
- Hi. Please can you help me unsubscribe from lemmy.ml's ActivityPub trafffic?
I followed some popular communities from a Mastodon server ages ago, and then unsubscribed when I was satisfied that it was working.
However, lemmy seems to have some problem with the way Mastodon sends an 'Undo/Follow', so it's still been sending traffic ever since. Recreating it on a lemmy server I booted, journalctl shows this error:
WARN Error encountered while processing the incoming HTTP request: lemmy_server::root_span_builder: Unknown: 0: lemmy_apub::insert_received_activity with ap_id=Url { scheme: "https", cannot_be_a_base: false, username: "", password: None, host: Some(Domain("activitypub.academy")), port: None, path: "/e97071d0-54e4-4527-9865-e44cf1a55970", query: None, fragment: None } at crates/apub/src/lib.rs:191 1: lemmy_apub::activities::following::follow::verify at crates/apub/src/activities/following/follow.rs:78 2: lemmy_apub::activities::following::undo_follow::verify at crates/apub/src/activities/following/undo_follow.rs:66 3: lemmy_apub::http::community::community_inbox at crates/apub/src/http/community.rs:50 4: lemmy_server::root_span_builder::HTTP request with http.method=POST http.scheme="https" http.host=38ec-77-100-144-83.ngrok-free.app http.target=/c/test1/inbox otel.kind="server" request_id=70c556c1-9f2c-421d-90f3-826e9d12879c http.status_code=400 otel.status_code="OK" at src/root_span_builder.rs:16
I reconfigured the JSON that Mastodon sends to be more like a Lemmy one, signed the http request with a new set of keys, and sent it via a command-line script. Technically, this works, in that I can use the script to subscribe and unsubscribe from lemmy communities. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the private key for the old Mastodon user and lemmy.ml (which rejects the http requests). I don't know why, but it has stalled my attempts to unsubscribe from my side.
As you're likely aware, lemmy.ml has bouts of sending out an absolute firehose of info at times, and it's a waste of your resources sending them to me (who's resorted to 403ing everything, so they don't overwhelm the ActivityPub server I'm building).
So, if possible, can someone have look what a user from lemmon.website is still subscribed to (memes and asklemmy, certainly) and unsubscribe them please?
I can provide some credentials on lemmon.website if you require.
Thanks.
- Does anyone have any spare CI machines to help run lemmy jobs? PM me if you do.
We'd like to add some more CI runners for lemmy jobs, cause we have very few right now. If anyone has any spare builder machines, pm me. It'd be greatly appreciated.
- Management of abandoned/unmoderated communities.
During the "big move", I subscribed to a bunch of emerging communities. Now that the craze has died down, lots of these communities have been abandoned for 3 months or so.
Are these communities worth preserving, or do they take up unnecessary space and could be removed?
Just genuinely interested, I'm sure other instances have their own methods of handling that but was wondering how it's managed here.
- Why is join lemmy promoting a pedophile instance?

- Would you be interested in opting-in to lemmy-meter?
Follow up on a previous post: [DISCUSS] Recent momentary outages
---
I've been working on a simple opt-in solution, primarily for Lemmy end users like me (but also helpful for admins), to easily check the status/health of their favourite instance.
You can find the details of the implementation in ! lemmy-meter github repo.
---
❓ @admins: would you be interested in adding your instance to lemmy-meter?
You don't need to do anything except confirming - I'll handle the rest. It should only take a few minutes for your instance to show up in lemmy-meter.
Out of the box it will send only 4 HTTP GET requests per minute to your instance. However that is totally configurable if it sounds too much or too little.
---
PS: I wasn't sure how to reach out to the admins short of messaging them individually.

Tried to make on new account on lemmy... It did work in the end (obviously). Good thing there is the audio version to read it for me. (sarcasm, I know it's supposed to be for accessibility purposes. Still used it though)
- It's possible to see comments to my posts by users from defederated instances?
I can see these comment to my posts in the notifications, from apps or website, but not in any other page.
- [DISCUSS] Recent momentary outages
Lemmy, in particular lemmy.ml, is so good that I've got completely used to checking it out almost every hour to enjoy the content. Kudos to all the mods and developers ❤️
---
Recently, in the past few weeks, I couldn't help but notice that momentary outages of lemmy.ml, ranging from a couple of mins to longer than 30mins, have become more frequent.
Is my observation correct? Or I'm just addicted to Lemmy? 😂
If it is correct, have we got any idea what are the possible causes of the outages? In particular, I'd like to know if there's anything that I, as a member of this safe & welcoming community, can do to potentially help ¹.
---
On a related note, if the outages are of such a nature that may be predicted but not prevented (such as routine maintenance restart, load-testing or new feature deploy), do you folks think it makes sense to have a post here in "meta" at least a few mins prior to the action?
¹ I've got about a quarter of a century experience dealing w/ code and systems.
- Is !community_requests@lemmy.ml still the place to request unmoderated communities?
Basically, title.
I have a request for !personalfinance@lemmy.ml on !community_requests@lemmy.ml since 8 days.
Dessalines is the only mod there, but I guess he has bigger fish to fry.
- Should lemmy.ml block chatgpt scraping in robots.txt?
Some context about this here: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/openai-details-how-to-keep-chatgpt-from-gobbling-up-website-data/
the robots.txt would be updated with this entry
User-agent: GPTBot Disallow: /
Obviously this is meaningless against non-openai scrapers or anyone who just doesn't give a shit.

- Do edits show up quickly in federated instances?
I frequently notice typos, grammatical errors, poor wording, etc. in my comments shortly after posting, so I edit them. Do those edits get shared among servers as quickly as the initial post did?
- Anyone else noticed there hasn't been any Lemmy.world content federating for the past couple of days? Is it because of their constant outages?
Title. With so many communities on .world, the feed feels very sparse without them.
- Noob question about federation and communities
On my main (@Choco617@lemmy.world), I moderate !technicaldeathmetal@lemmy.world. I thought I’d kinda federate my existence on the platform by creating this alt on lemmy.ml, but when I search communities, while I can find some other lemmy.world ones (validating that .ml/.world federation is working as I understand it), technicaldeathmetal isn’t found. Am I doing something dumb as a user? As a mod? Have I misunderstood the intent of this instance, and I’d be better off trying the same thing from elsewhere? TIA
- Are there any plans for lemmy.ml to federate with hexbear.net?
It seems lemmygrad.ml is federating with them and I was just wondering if this instance will too. I used to browse r/chapotraphouse before reddit banned them and I didn't know the community was still alive in hexbear until recently. I'm sure a lot of leftists in this instance would also benefit from being able to browse hexbear contents
- Non Rhetorical question: Is lemmy.ml the lead developers instance? why did you ignore June 4, 2023 GitHub issue 2910?
Reference, June 4, 2023: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2910
Questions:
-
Lemmy.ml was crashing every 10 minutes of every single day since May 25. Do you dispute this claim I make? Server log Evidence?
-
June 4 issue 2910 was on Github and the same developers who run lemmy.ml put a tag on the issue June 4.
-
Did it say server-crashing topic?
-
Were you aware of the end-of-June Reddit API change?
-
When was the issue fixed, date and who?
-
Did you ask PostgreSQL communities on Lemmy for help? Which posts?
-
Is lemmy.ml a developer run instance? Is this your idea of "supported" example of Lemmy's rust lemmy_server code?
Please explain. Like PostgreSQL EXPLAIN?
Was this what was given as an Issue 2910 to you on June 4, 2023?

- Any chance we could get an old.lemmy.ml theme?
I love the style that was implemented for https://old.lemmy.world and https://old.lemmy.sdf.org. Are there any plans to add something similar for this instance? (Not sure if an old subdomain is the right choice for this, since there is already a theme selection in the profile settings.)
Thanks for your work!
- Issues seeing posts from other instances?
My apologies if this is a known issue or dumb question. Is there a reason that when subscribing to !superstonk@lemmit.online there are no posts showing up? I am subscribed to it as a user of lemmy.ml but nothing is there. When I browse to https://lemmit.online/c/superstonk there are many many posts.
- problems logging inlemmy.ml 2fa doesn't work - Lemmy
Hi, I enabled 2fa about 2 weeks ago, it seemed to work but now I can’t log in, it doesn’t say anything, I just see 400 http status in browser’s debugger (F12), i have only this Jerboa session logged in and no browser session to disable 2fa
Previously this post title was "2fa doesn't work"
Hi, I enabled 2fa about 2 weeks ago, it seemed to work but now I can’t log in, it doesn’t say anything, I just see 400 http status in browser’s debugger (F12), i have only this Jerboa session logged in and no browser session to disable 2fa
EDIT: weird, now it doesn't ask for my 2fa (admin godly intervened?), just straight refuses to log me in, no error message, just HTTP 400 in console, password reminder email doesn't come too Imgur link
Apps say incorrect_login
UPDATE so yeah, it was a 2fa problem, new jerboa has a corresponding toggle in the account settings, so I disabled it and can log in in other clients
- Will lemmy.ml open up for new users again?
First off, please bear with me before shoving something down. Totally aware that lemmy.ml has been experiencing a significant surge in traffic lately.
This is my (sort of) test account, and I wanted to get a new account name that actually represents me. It’s been almost 2 days since I signed up, and the process seems to be stuck in limbo. Not sure if that’s because the username and email address I attempted to register are too cryptic and come off as a dummy.
What’s worse is that I mistakenly used the wrong username during sign-up, and now I’m eager to reclaim my email address.
Yes, while I could have easily created an account on another instance and still interacted here, I have my own personal, complicated, and admittedly silly reasons for wanting to have my main under this domain.
All I wanted to know is whether lemmy.ml will open up again in the future. I don’t mind waiting if it will. And not sure how can I reclaim my email address.
- Can something be done about the clearly biased Ukraine community?
I just think it’s a bit crazy to see a pro Russia admin use this community to spew misinformation.
- Admins added a mod to our community without checking if it was actually abandoned
** Update: I still haven't heard from any mod, but the user did get back to me though they weren't very receptive to the frustration. However, I did find out that you can remove others as mods but the option is hidden in having to click into one of their posts. So, this unique situation is resolved, but the appointing of a mod without checking if the current community is actually abandoned should still be addressed.**
A user posted on !community_requests claiming that a sub I'm a moderator of had no active mods despite the fact that I have actively been posting on there and holding a moderation discussion with the community this week. At the time of request the account was only a day old. Still, an admin proceeded to make them a mod in our community.
As far as I can tell, this was a mistake on both the user and admin's part.
Within an hour of the new mod appearing I responded to both the admin and the user politely asking them for answers about what happened. I also privately DMed the user on Matrix asking them to demod themselves and put a post up in the community petitioning to become a mod instead of just sidestepping the people who are already there.
It has now been nearly 8 hours and no admin has gotten back to me, and the user hasn't responded.
Even if this is a mistake, it gives me a lot of pause. The fact a one day old account could come and claim our community was abandoned, even though clearly it was not, and be given mod powers for hours upon hours after the mistake being reported is really scary.
Again, I think this was a mistake on both the admin and user's part, but there needs to be a better process to deal with this going forward. I'm really disappointed.___
