Lemmy and my Switch to PieFed
  • Not annoying at all.

I‘m running a public instance on two threads and I think 2 gb of ram. A private instance shared with other services on 6 threads and 8 gb of ram. Make of that what you want. :)

I would probably rent a vps which you could extend if needed but start small. With 2 threads and 4 gb of ram at least.

  • Lemmy and my Switch to PieFed
  • Anecdotal evidence: I run two instances, a private and a public one. Neither uses a lot of resources.

But I get the database thing. Its spiking every couple minutes and a lot every hour. It’s not a big deal if you have 2 threads at least but I can see how it doesnt work for everyone in every scenario.

I‘m glad alternatives exist and I‘m much more positive on AP alternatives than protocol exiles.

  • First of all, people sometimes use analogies that dont make sense to you. No need to be a dick about it. You could just make a better example.

Staying with cars, I see my mistake. Valve is not producing the cars in this example, valve is doing the car sales for the (small) manufacturer. They dont provide any part of the car, only the exposure and surrounding community. Its not nothing but has zero to do with the product.

What they are asking is „you can sell cars from our showroom, just dont sell them for cheaper than we do“. Which does make sense.

Why I Can't Use Linux - My Top 3 Reasons
  • What most people forget: you can spend small amounts to actually improve foss software if you need it to „just work“. There are hundreds if not thousands of hobby devs that will help you for a tip! :) if he spent thousands of dollars on plugins, I bet he could sponsor a small dev so that he and others can become independent of windows. Which by the way might deprecate his software anyway at some time.

Why I Can't Use Linux - My Top 3 Reasons
  • The important part here is that if someone is willing they can add these features to foss software. Either by learning/doing the work or by helping fund someone to do it for them.

Libre office (no idea about open office, sadly) works in the same way excel does. A lot of the „advanced“ features of excel can also be achieved in other ways or by other software. Of course I‘m willing to get schooled by someone who has advanced knowledge of both and says its insanely different. But from my perspective the differences are marginal.

  • $843 million lawsuit against Valve already has its own website: "The Steam Claim" accuses the biggest store in PC gaming of "overcharging" players
  • Let me try and understand this by altering the product.

Valve now produces cars and the devs are people who make these cars inside factories. Same as is currently the case, these employees get cars cheaper and are asked to not undercut the seller by holding onto the cars for a certain amount of time before selling them used.

It does make sense for me to view it that way. One could argue that the couple cars that get sold by employees doesnt do anything to hurt the brand and that pressuring them to keep the price high manipulates the market.

Also, doesnt the work of steam accumulate to hosting mirrors of a game and hosting a large website they get billions in revenue for?

  • $843 million lawsuit against Valve already has its own website: "The Steam Claim" accuses the biggest store in PC gaming of "overcharging" players
  • Just for clarity: how would it do a disservice to players if a dev can sell their steam keys for any price, no matter which platform?

  • Why don’t you like Apple?
  • From recent experience: They read your screen which means the government reads your screen as well. Its okay. if you’re doing nothing illegal, you have nothing to hide! All history books that could tell you otherwise are paywalled anyway!

I‘ll have to get rid of plex now because this kind of BS is not for me. I completely get the problem with devs being forced to do this unpaid but its no fun. I invest heavily in open source, both money and time. Having this kind of paywall really sucks.

I just found this community through the old one on world. good idea to move away to avoid further centralization.

Minetest/Voxelibre appreciation I'm running a whitelisted minetest server for a couple friends. it is publicly listed and peeps can ask to join if they're so inclined. I really enjoy this game although or because I own minecraft and feel like hobby devs like me should spend their time on foss projects, not microsoft.

Weird behavior Currently, I'm experiencing some interesting behavior: I'm in a jungle and due to thunderstorms, the trees caught fire. the simulation distance I suppose, the fire does not get put out by rain and slowly burns down all the things around me. Although it is raining every day.

I tested this by going near the fire while it was raining and it gets put out.

I think fire should either have finite lifespan if not placed on netherrack or at least lightning should only hit in the same distance as the simulation distance is at.

Currently trying to judge if anyone else has this problem and considering if I should look for an issue/create one.

    Have a good one! :)

There are a couple of very cool resources out there but some are outdated and I dont want to search forever until I find one that is well maintained.

Does anyone know if the prices of the items are stored somewhere in a readable format? If so, feel free to let me know where. I went through the files on my linux steam install but aside from some texts I havent found anything useful so far.

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

    What wrong with libretranslate?

Hi there! I‘m actively degooogling and switching from proprietary apps to foss.

Recently put away with google translator and put a libretranslate link on my desktop because I need to translate a word or two per day.

Sadly, it regularly gets real easy things wrong. Am I using it wrong? Is it not ready for daily use?

Thanks for reading and any answers.

Wireguard connecting 1:n docker containers for object storage

Hi folks, I'm trying to put my newly acquired HDDs to good use and at the same time manage the minuscule amount of storage my vps has. Since it is hosting several fedi services, I need some external storage and I figured I'd just tunnel some object storage from home.

So I set up a working wireguard connection from my homenetwork to the vps, connected the object storage (GarageHQ) to one end and probably will connect the fedi services (lemmy, mastodon, matrix, peertube) to the other.

Here comes the issue: do I have to make the respective wireguard instances a proxy for the services to be able to speak with each other or do I even have to make a site to site connection to connect the two docker networks?

The connection would look something like this: GarageHQ---WireguardHS---WireguardVPS---Mastodon|Mastodon---NginxPM---OpenWeb

Anyone got something like this to work so far? Am I overlooking something major?

Thanks for reading, have a good one.

Self hosted remote storage for VPS?

I'm currently running both a home server and a VPS. The former is not reachable through the internet, only through vpn. The latter hosts public services.

The VPS is regularly cutting it very close with storage and today I messed up and crashed the whole stack trying to make an impromptu backup. Lesson learned: we need more storage! I could just rent more storage but just today I updated my home server with 16 TB of raid 1 enterprise HDDs.

So I thought I could maybe do a (wireguard) VPN tunnel directly to some storage service that I host on my homeserver. The upload is not great but realistically I dont need much. The important stuff stays on the VPS. Mainly videos, pictures and other stuff that doesnt get accessed a lot should go there. The rest should be "cached" at the VPS.

I would have to host wireguard on a server port, only have it access one folder which doesnt contain anything important, forward the port on the router and have the vps have the keys. Even if someone gets into the VPS and steals the keys, they only get that one file storage folder.

Has anyone done this? Are there services that do this or do I just host wireguard and thats it?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one! :)

Will an iOS like interface for FOSS phones help with adoption?

Long time iOS user with perception issues here. I went to iOS because it was very simple and intuitive to use. My daily life was too busy for me to tinker with my phone a lot.

Now I'm using pmos with phosh and I'm mostly loving it. But some of the linux specific decisions and directions it takes dont really work with me.

Thats why I started asking myself if a DE exists which is basically a clone of the proprietary apple phone OS. It should obviously still be FOSS and prioritize FOSS apps and so on. But I think it would help adoption by mainstream if iOS users (especially with need for accessibility features). Its basically the reason I was able to switch from minecraft to mineclone. It's basically the same (although I respect their decision to rename to Voxelibre, iirc and go their own way).

I know this is probably going to get a lot of hate because iOS bad and tinkering good and so on. But accessibility is important for many people, especially in their busy lives.

Feel free to point me in the right direction if something like this exists or lets try and make something.

Thanks for reading and have a good one.

Is there a way to manage your presence over many forges?

I'm still learning. I have a github account, many gitlab accounts, a gitlab.com account and my own forgejo.

I managed to clone most stuff to my own forge but managing issues is still a pain on so many platforms, for me at least.

Easiest would be one frontend where I can just combine issues over all my accounts.

Is there a straightforward way I just havent found yet?

Having some issues and not getting anywhere.

Hi folks! Yesterday, I joined the club and installed PostmarketOS+phosh on my "new" OnePlus6. Besides a usb-c (power only) cable that cost me an hour to troubleshoot, everything went smoothly.

Well, nearly everything. What I cant figure out at this point is how to install and get software. I'm on the latest stable release which might have been a mistake but I'm usually quite cautious at first.

So my problem is pmos came with 16 apps preinstalled and the software app only shows these when I open it. Can someone confirm or deny if this is normal? I asked around in 5 different places for stuff in the last 16 hrs (yes, I did sleep in between) and I know a lot of stuff now but this I could not figure out. :D

I know I can install flatpak, which I did but it never shows any results at all which I find unrealistic. I put in the repo like it is shown in the wiki and I have internet. Something else must be wrong.

I'm an admin by trade and I do some software development as a hobby so feel free to assume I know how to use the command line. I'm only a full time linux user for maybe half a year.

Anybody got ideas what might be wrong?

    Google Pixel alternatives?

I'm thinking of getting a second phone to ease off iOS. It has been good for productivity stuff but the closed off nature of the device keeps disrupting my plans. Everything is either expensive or ad ridden. (Except floccus, floccus is awesome)

So far I have read about graphene OS and am quite interested. I really despise google though. Any chance to use another device and put some linux flavor on it? I was playing with the idea of a pinephone but it seems to be nowhere near daily drivable, fairphone is starting at 580 €, volla phone (german) 450 €...

Some people said xiaomi should be rootable. But the amount of different phones is huge. The price range is awesome though. I was thinking sub 300 €/$ would be awesome so tinkering doesnt hurt me financially.

Disclaimer: I dont want to go full hermit mode with no sim and a faraday bag. I respect the opinion but thats not what I'm trying to do. I want to write some small apps for my phone and use it as a computer if needed. Calling, matrix and browser should work flawlessly.

    Any ideas or suggestions? :)

I'm thinking of printing flyers for autism acceptance month. Any good sources?

I would like to help educate people about autism in a healthy way. Reason being I met someone in a critical position who didnt know a thing about autism but had some misconceptions which I find to be very dangerous.

Does anyone have sources of well made and non patronizing/infantilizing texts or something?

Is there a License that requires the user to donate if they make revenue?

I tried a couple license finders and I even looked into the OSI database but I could not find a license that works pretty much like agpl but requiring payment (combined 1% of revenue per month, spread evenly over all FOSS software, if applicable) if one of these is true:

    • the downstream user makes revenue (as in "is a company" or gets donations)
    • the downstream distributor is connected to a commercial user (e.g. to exclude google from making a non profit to circumvent this license)

I ask this because of the backdoor in xz and the obviously rotten situation in billion dollar companies not kicking their fair share back to the people providing this stuff.

So, if something similar exists, feel free to let me know.
