do you know a good and privacy friendly way to pay with your phone (like Google Pay)?
I am using Graphene OS on a Pixel 8 and lice in Germany so some services might not be available here π
I guess you could keep your phone in a faraday bag and take it out when you need to make a payment. But then you'd be liable to be charged any time you have your phone out, unless you go out of your way to remove the card from the case, which defeats the point.
Doesn't exist. I was also surprised that this was not NFC-related tech, but google/apple-specific.
I guess it makes sense - you need some kind of authority to validate/take blame for transactions (outside of the hot mess of block chain), I had just always presumed that the tech didn't need much to work.
Moreover, personal transaction details of offline digital euro payments would only be known to the payer and the payee, providing a cash-like level of privacy.
I kinda disagree. Not just for the technical solution that is supposed to enable a fairly good level of privacy but also because I tend to trust ECB employees and ways of working as I've done a few projects with them.
Private payments and digital Euro is something that does not go hand-in-hand imo. How big of a crypto fan I am, I don't like a state/governement/country/union coin.
Why are they so dodgy about Monero you think? Because of the illicit transactions? Nah.. this is just an extra factor
Yeah, can confirm the VR Pay App works without issues for NFC Payment on GrapheneOS on a Pixel 8 Pro. Privacy wise it is probably the same as paying with a banking card.
Like others said, banking needs licensing and licensing costs money. If you already have a bank account, you already trust one party. Ask them if they roll their own app-payment or are already partnered with a service. That way, you can avoid google/Apple and minimize spreading the trust to other parties. My bank cooperates with Fidesmo, for example. Fidesmo then sells wearables with nfc-pay.
Afaik the only German bank offering a similar product is the Sparkasse with their own payment app. I don't think a general purpose app exists since mobile payment apps rely on a lot of different services and need to integrate with the individual banks directly.
