apologies, i took as fact due to it originating from the covid conscious folk - there is low confidence in reputability of these claims due to source of reported symptoms being from an anti china faction.

They're citing the epoch times as a source, not exactly the gold standard.

Obviously no covid outbreak/wave is without risks, but I have had that particular "razor blade throat" symptom from strep throat more than once. And the hospitalization rates are in line with previous covid strains.

Omicron? The nomad soul?

There are two new variants that have shown up and have the potential to start new covid waves. This one in China, and another one in NY, both are growing at about the same rate. Europe has both variants growing at about the same rate.
Expect a new wave to start showing up in the US in the next few weeks.
There's been relatively low rates of covid since the beginning of the year, but it looks like that's over.

It doesn't matter if this strain is really going around China or not. And if it's really from China or not
Even if it isn't, all that means is that it's about to be here soon and they're confessing this preemptively
- It's already in Europe, along with a different variant that's starting to spread in NY. "razor blade-throat" is just covid doing what covid has done several years. The reporting isn't technically untrue, just sensationalized and bad.
  
  I don't think past covid infectees reported that much throat pain though, it sounds like it's worse than previous strains
