Need some help with a VPN

So, my partner finally decided to get with on the trolley and start getting shit for free

Problem is, I've been out of the sailing game for a while, so I don't know what's good anymore and I figure y'all probably know what's gonna work best for us anyway

I'm sort of tech savvy, but anything on the less finicky side would probably be best

Thanks in advance, -Love, Flakes

  • Don't use the free ones, you're looking at downloading malware at worst or just ineffective at best.

I use Mullvad, privacy focused which is cool. No emails, no nothing. Your account is a string of like 24 digits and you add time on their website. They even do envelopes of cash and crypto or bank transfers if you're into that. 5 euro/month.

    • I feel like Mullvad is a map of all countries that have 14+ eyes servers but yeah

      • Mullvad's willingness (and encouragement) to not even have a credit card payment on file earns them a lot of trust from me.

It means that, unlike basically every other VPN out there, they're willing to have literally 0 information about you, and even being surveilled from the VPN server itself wouldn't be enough to determine your identity.

  • Another vote for mullvad. 35 cad for half a year, 5 devices. Bought a voucher on Amazon. Mobile and desktop applications. I have my home router as a wireguard client.

I'm pretty dumb with this stuff so I also have the desktop app on my PC with the Killswitch enabled, since it's usually seeding and serving jellyfin to my home.

Haven't had any issues gaming on it so it seems to work lmao

  • Highly recommend ProtonVPN.

I pay for it but it easily pays for itself with how much shit I torrent. And it can keep you safe from other things as well. Always use a VPN with the killswitch!

If you need help setting it up or figuring out how to torrent with, just let me know. Also recommend QBit Torrent as a client.

  • Qbittorrent for your client. Make sure to go into settings, advanced, and then set the network interface to the one created by your VPN client.

This is better than a simple killswitch setup because there's no opportunity for connection failover to your real ip if the vpn connection breaks for whatever reason. If the VPN client isnt running in this setup no data in and no data out (no leaks).

    Public trackers of note:

    rutracker torrentgalaxy audiobookbay 1337x

Easiest private tracker to get into that covers most of what you'll probably ever look for: TorrentLeech

  • I use private internet access, it has a kill switch and no letters so far (knock on every wooden surface).

  • Been using PIA for a few years. Server connection speed has been wildly variable lately though... I like to route through Venezuela.
