So over the past couple of days I've asked about adding a Rocket Lab community. It seems there are those against adding a community for a corporate entity, those keen to get such a community, and those that don't care either way.
What's our decision making process? Do we do a poll? Do we add communities if there is enough interest, or side on not adding them unless there is widespread support?
Do we want to keep communities here focused on locals, or are general interest communities suited to lemmy.nz if they have a tie to NZ?
A more generic aerospace and technology community would be better, in my view. I'd like to discuss the benefits companies like SpaceX can bring to NZ as well, for example.
I feel this is a quite different audience, which is something we sorta need to work out.
Currently, every local community we have is specifically for NZ people. Whether they have their account on this instance or not, the content is not really that targeted (or interesting) to someone with no ties to NZ.
Adding a community about NZ space companies would again mean that the community is focused for NZers.
On the other hand, a Rocket Lab community would be a more general interest community. People with no ties to NZ at all would join and participate, and the fact it's hosted on lemmy.nz would be incidental.
So the question is whether we want these sorts of general interest communities on Lemmy.nz, or if we want all our communities targeted at NZers and NZ adjacent users only.
I don't really have a preference either way myself. Ultimately whether it's here or on another instance we can still access it.
It’s nice to have NZ based communities on here, but I don’t see why we can’t have more generic ones either. Unless of course it’s putting to much load on the server or something?
What you want are neodymium magnets - even a tiny button sized one would be a lot more powerful than your average fridge magnet. I ordered mine from https://dangerousmagnets.co.nz/
So, one thing I want is a magnet strong enough to hold up art. But the other thing I want is to not have a kid having their intestines ripped apart (nothing gruesome in that link) if they swallow them. So I've specifically tried to avoid the rare-earth magnets, and instead want a magnet that is strong because it is big and unswallowable. Or at the very least, well attached to some larger structure.
Hmm, a quick browse of their site shows they do have magnets, but I was thinking platic things with a magnet on thback rather than just the magnet. In particular, something big enough to not be swallowed would be good.
