Before the embers were even cold in Lāhainā, Maui, survivors of the wildfires started reporting cold calls from land speculators hoping to scoop up Hawaiian properties at bargain prices — proving once again that capitalists never let a good crisis go to waste.
Unfortunately, many people with Native ancestry here are “land rich, money poor,” which is what speculators are banking on. Fortunately a lot of them are on the more north side of the island, which didn’t burn. But it’s bad, and Maui was rapidly turning into Oahu even before the fire.
