How bad is it that I still don't use reusable cups at work?
Don't be nice, be honest. I can take some critique.
I actually used to do the no plastic thing until COVID, since then I've been paranoid about sharing the same public water thing as people who aren't careful. I'm not saying that's a good reason, the risks are certainly much lower than breathing in infected air, and probably pretty low in general.
I'm also aware that the whole personal responsibility thing is pretty neoliberal. I think there are limits to that argument, like I'm a vegan, mask wearing, public transit taking human.
Edit: I have a cup of coffee in the morning and another bottle of water at lunch.
Unless you have a compromised immune system (in which case you are gonna die if you go to work anyway) then you can afford to touch the tap. No one is sticking their butt in it so the water itself is clean. Literally just wash your hands with soap and shut it off with your elbow or whatever. You are more likely to get e coli when touching the door handle to exit the bathroom.
As for keeping the cup clean, if they use a dishwasher it will be clean, if they don't you are right to worry, so take your cup home or something.

It's intention is to tell you that we need to make systemic changes to have a real impact.
You should use a reusable water bottle / cup. Don't know what else to tell you.
Honestly, I understand this behavior, I really do. I’m fortunate that my office has one of those water bottle refill stations, so the nozzle for that is designed to only work with water bottles. Also, it’s hand free which is great. That said, I haven’t used a drinking fountain since well before Covid.

Surely it's better to just bring your metal water bottle to work than drinking from disposable cups everyone has been coughing around

How much water do you drink in a day? I have a pretty normal size reusable water bottle and it holds more than enough for a workday. You could just fill it at home in the morning instead of needing to use the water fountain that other people are using.
I have one cup of coffee in the morning and one bottle of water for lunch. I'm perfectly capable of carrying water with me, but Jesus water is the heaviest thing people have on them. I'm just whinging, though. I'm able to manage.
From what you have told, I'm not able to gather what you would have hypothetically used the reusable cup for. Either way if I had to make a guess I would say it's a big deal.

Good for you, comrade. I hate to be defensive, but I'm still not convinced that it's valuable. Not that I can't be convinced, but it just feels really liberal.
Edit because the original post was mean: trying to stop using single use plastic is a good thing and you should try to do it if you can
my workers offers unlimited free bottles of water and bananas. it's the only "free" shit we get from them and i've gotten seriously hurt from being dehydrated
sometimes you just have to take whats offered. i try to refill any plastic water bottles i have a few times until they get too soft.
maybe you could take them home and do that? do the "reuse" part of the three Rs
I always reuse plastic bottles a few times, ngl. The fine balance between "getting more use out of this wasteful crap" and "not eating kilograms of microplastics"
