Jon Stewart said the same thing, Democrats and pundits were talking about being too far left this whole campaign. So he showed a bunch of the Democrat's commercials from this campaign season, and none of them mentioned "woke, left" policies.
It was all about the border, or funding the police, or that they explicitly don't support "forced sex changes."
And Stewart responded, "... What woke, left, progressive policies?!? These all sound like Republican talking points!"

Yeah. The Republicans ran a ton of anti-trans hysteria ads at all levels, including Trump. The Democrats didn't significantly address the issue, so the belief is everyone just believed the nonsense from the anti-trans ads.
I am skeptical of this theory until there's good data to back it up (not holding my breath). I doubt it convinced anyone who wasn't already transphobic; it may have helped turning out transphobes.
