Ultrawide or multi-monitor setup?
  • That's promising! I was looking at 34" ultrawides when thinking about my ubuntu + i3 setup, I didn't even consider that 49" was an option. Is there anything that you think the dual monitor setup did better? Or were your concerns solved by the tiling wm?

  • Ultrawide or multi-monitor setup?
  • Yeah its 100% nicer when you can work on one monitor and have info on the other instead of flipping back and forth on the primary. But there's a certain appeal to having just a huge single monitor... Think it would free up some table space and could keep my gaze more centered. I use ubuntu + i3 for both work and play so I'm wondering if a huge monitor could provide enough visual real estate to keep the convenience of two monitors. If I was using Windows or Mac I'd probably be more inclined to stick to dual monitor

  • Ultrawide or multi-monitor setup?

I have a two monitor set up going right now hooked up to a dual display KVM switch. Sadly, a recent power outage has caused some finicky behavior in either my KVM or my secondary monitor, since it comes in and out. Will get around to debugging my setup once I have some time this holiday season, but I was also debating on switching to a single ultrawide monitor setup. I'm a software engineer by trade, and I get the most use out of the second monitor while working. However, when I'm doing literally anything else, the second monitor just tends to be Spotify, discord, or some background video or podcast.

What's your preference? Anyone switch from one to the other? How do you use your setup?

Whats the difference between cheap and expensive modern TVs?

I feel like it used to be size, color, and clarity meant more expensive. Now I look at a 500$ 4k TV and a 2000$ 4k TV and I don't know what the difference is. They can both be smart TVs, be the same size, and have a lot of same advertised features, but what are the subtle unspoken mysteries that justify a huge price gap?

Monthly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing?
  • Picked up Marvel's midnight suns when it was on sale in november and oh boy does it scratch my itch. 60 hours in and on the final mission. Definitely going to go back for a second playthrough/new game plus!

  • For a Google drive alternative I've heard of nextcloud but haven't looked into it. For staying in touch with news articles, etc you could look into RSS readers and subscribe to RSS feeds from publications online. For a Google alternative, duckduckgo can handle your search needs. I opted to sail the high seas rather than subscribe to multiple streaming services, but I haven't found a YouTube replacement

I know you mentioned you weren't super tech savvy, but check out some of the stuff on the https://awesome-selfhosted.net/ list. Not everything there actually needs to be self hosted or set up in any complex way.

  • If you're up for it, why not ask your past dates why they think you guys didn't work out, or what you could work on as a person. People you've spent time with will probably give you the most objective take if there was anything other than "we just didn't mesh".

  • Weekly what have you been playing discussion - week of September, 11, 2023
  • Baldurs gate 3, just beat the game and now I'm going for a tactician run. The wife and I have also been playing pit people co op. We hooked up her steam deck to the living room TV and have been looking for more couch co op games!

  • Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.
  • I'm sure there will be people that take this seriously lol, PSA to others don't do this. It fucks up the land and nearby water sources as it spreads out. In the US you can be forced to replace the contaminated soil

  • Are you holding off on any game in particular right now?
  • I'm a big Larian fan and D&D enjoyer, so I made an exception for BG3 since I knew I'd be sinking hundreds of hours easily into that game :P

I just picked up Moonlighter for like 3 bucks so that's my next adventure.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes to mind with the Phantom Liberty DLC being around the corner. Also waiting out on Starfield to see how it goes, Fallout 3 and New Vegas have a special place in my heart but Bethesda has had a lot of misses for me since then.

  • Would it make sense for a person in a "privileged class" to move from a red state?
  • Hey you've clearly been thinking a lot about this and where you want to take your life. It will take effort either way, whether you choose to build your life there or elsewhere, so feel the freedom to try something else. If you're undecided, maybe think about what you would regret the least. I've also thought making a quick pros and cons list for myself helps. Best of luck to you

  • [Discussion] Favorite or must-have accessories/mods?

Excited to have bought the steam deck during the sale! I was planning on grabbing a dock and micro sd card and I noticed there were a bunch of accessories and customizations people could do with this thing. Was wondering if there were anything the community loved in particular?
