Problems with the clipboard in Wayland/Hyprland/Alacritty

I recently started the process of switching over to wayland and, so far, it's going reasonably well. There are still a few things to get working, but I'm happy with the progress speed.

One of the more annoying problems, however, is using the clipboard. I'm mostly seeing it in Alacritty - which I didn't really use before, so maybe that's the culprit, but the normal select/middle click doesn't seem to work consistently. Sometimes I does and occasionally it just doesn't. Same for CTRL-C/CTRL-V. Either nothing gets pasted or is pastes something I selected 20 minutes ago and had forgotten about - but I can't replace the clipboard for love nor money.

Any suggestions on this gratefully received. Ideally, I'd like it to work how it did before and consistently - which is that either of the two above mentioned methods worked.

    Thanks in advance.

Trying to get my head around sfwbar configs.

In my recent experiments with Wayland, I find my self still very much trying to decide on a decent panel.

At present, I am wrestling with the configs for sfwbar - mainly because the documentation seems fairly sparse. Lots other people seem to use it, though, so it must be possible to figure it out.

I'm currently struggling with three particular aspects:

    1. How to prevent windows maximising over or under the bar. At the moment the bottom of all my windows is hidden under the panel.

    2. Configuring some sort of network data for the widget. At the moment I have a very simple LAN icon which, as a tooltip, displays static information that I could easily obtain with a simple "ip a". What I really want is, at the very least, some way of monitoring when my interface is transferring data in one direction or the other. If it could tell me the amount of data that would be perfect. All I've been able to figure out so far from what docs there are is that it might be something to do with a NetStat function. How to use this function, however, is far from clear and I can't find examples.

    3. How to get a bar on each of my monitors that, ideally, displays icons for only the windows on that monitor.

Any help gratefully received - thanks in advance!

My Initial Experience with Wayland on Arch and Nvidia

I was, until recently, under the impression that it wasn't even worth bothering with wayland if you had an Nvidia GPU - as I do (GTX 1070).

There was a recent post somewhere, however, where someone talked about their experiences with wayland on an Nvidia system. In my shock - I thought I'd give it a go. Here are my impressions and also some questions.

Firstly, I was amazed at how easy it was. I decided to go with labwc because I use and love openbox on xorg, so I thought I'd be comfortable there. I installed it and, well, it just worked. I was a little underwhelmed at the completely blank screen I saw, but then I realised that it was actually working when I right clicked and a (tiny) menu appeared offering me the choices of reconfiguring or exiting.

I was somewhat surprised to not have any kind of mouse cursor at all. This was fixed by adding WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1 to ~/.config/labwc/environment. I'd like a better fix for this, but it seems to work for the moment.

Most of the apps I've tried run directly on wayland instead of XWayland - steam being the only exception so far. Steam seems to run well enough, though and the one game I've actually tried (Hollow Knight) ran, as far as I could tell in 5 minutes, perfectly.

I've since been messing around with various things like waybar and setting up the menu on my desktop and it seems to all be working well at the moment.

I used albert as my launcher on openbox, but that doesn't seem to work on wayland. I found a post about a guy who managed to get it to work, but it sounds like the performance simply wasn't worth the effort. So my first question: is there a launcher similar to albert that runs on Wayland? All my efforts to find something have so far come up blank. I mean, there are several options for launchers, but none as nice as albert that I've found yet… Fuzzel has potential, but it still doesn't look as good.

One of the main things I miss from openbox is the slit. As far as I can tell - it simply isn't supported on labwc or any other compositor I've been able to find - is that true? I can probably work around it using waybar modules or similar, but still…

I think that covers everything so far - I would certainly appreciate any tips/suggestions that any of you might have though!

Edit: After playing around in Wayland for more than a day now, I have to report that, unfortunately, Steam has unacceptable flickering/rendering issues. It only seems to affect some games, but it also affects the client. As far as I can tell, it's a known issue that doesn't have a fix or a usable workaround. sigh

This is something of a deal breaker for me - but, when it's fixed, at least I'll be ready for Wayland.

Also - for those suggesting I try Plasma. I appreciate the suggestion and screenshots do seem to show that it's beautiful, but I'm really a fan of the Openbox type aesthetic - which is why I've gone with labwc.

Edit #2: Also VCVRack flickers a lot as well - which, now that I think of it, is the only other app I've tried (I think) that runs on XWayland...

Good place for downloading digital comic books?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this.

I have a reasonably sized digital comic book collection - mostly bought through Comixology before they were taken over by Amazon. It was easy then to remove the DRM and have a free version of the books in my collection. Since you now have to go through Amazon it's not so easy.

I figured the easiest way to get the remaining books that I never got round to downloading would be to pirate them - I assume via torrenting or Usenet. It's been a long time since I've used either and, for all I know, there's a better way.

The fact is, though, I can't find very much content out there, but surely I'm not the only one who wants to download this kind of content?

So my question is - What's the best method for downloading comic books and where is the best online location for finding them?

What dotfiles manager do you use?

I'm looking for recommendations for a dotfile manager - there are so many out there I've got a bit of options paralysis!

I'd like a system that can backup all my dotfiles - with version management - and, if I nuked my home directory, could restore them all for me with a simple command.

Thanks in advance for you suggestions!

Bellman Stovetop - pressure gauge or no?

After my consideration about milk foaming here, I'm now considering getting a Bellman Stovetop steamer.

First of all - does anyone have any experience with it, bad or good, they'd like to share?

Secondly, I'm unsure whether to get the one with the gauge or not. I've read in a few places that it's actually not quite as good with the gauge - that it doesn't actually generate as much pressure. It's also more expensive and money is definitely an issue.

I've also read that, with the one without a gauge, you can tell when it's up to pressure with the pressure safety valve. However, I've also seen some retailers very firmly saying to not do this. It occurs to me that this might jsut be to cover themselves legally or whether it's actually a bad idea.

If there is a clear way to tell when it's up to pressure without a gauge, then it's obviously better to get that if only because it's cheaper. It would need to be possible to reliably tell in advance if it's there or not though.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Need some help figuring out the best milk solution.

TL:DR Need a simple but not too crappy solution for heating/frothing milk - ideally one that my kids could use safely.

    Apologies for the length!

OK - first a little background. I make coffee everyday with an aeropress and I'm happy with the coffee I'm getting from that. I also, however, enjoy milky drinks and want to add hot milk - ideally steamed/frothed to my coffee. Another key factor is that I live with chronic illness which causes pain and fatigue. Even just making my coffee can be tiring and/or aggravate pain so I want to keep things as simple as possible.

Until a couple of months ago, my milk routine was to simply microwave some milk in the mug and then press the aeropress into that. Then my wife dug out my old espresso machine (Ascaso - I can't remember the exact model.) It's not a great machine and, anyway, the gaskets have gone on the group head and it leaks terribly. I did, however, use it to steam milk. Again, it's not really good enough to get great results, but it was still the best milk I could make myself and I was having fun doing it - although it was pushing me right to the edge of what my health would allow me to do.

My kids also loved watching me do it and started asking me to make them mugs of "fluffy milk". I didn't mind doing this, but, again, it was exhausting and I certainly couldn't do it just after I'd made myself a coffee - which is when I got most requests.

I then began to wonder about an electric frother such as the Nespresso Aerocino. I hoped this could produce milk that, while not as good as steamed, was still good enough and was also simple enough to use that my kids could safely make their own "fluffy" milk.

I borrowed an aerocino from a friend and, I have to say, I'm very disappointed. As I said, I knew it wouldn't be as good as steamed milk, but even my worst steaming attempts were better. The capacity is too small and the froth is way to dense - it's a pain having to scoop it all out into the cup and it sits in a mountain of foam on the top and not integrated into the rest of the milk at all. About the only thing it seems to get right is the temperature of the milk. I may have opened a pandora's box, though. My kids love it and love being able to make their own milk drinks.

So - what all this is leading to is to ask for suggestions on a milk frothing/heating solution. An electric one at about the same price as the aerocino would make the process easier for me and would suit my kids, although I'd have to compromise somewhat on quality. I'm fine doing that, but not really to the extent I'm having to with the aerocino!

Ideally, for myself, I'd get a stand alone milk steamer, but these all seem to be either too expensive or are stove top - which makes me nervous in a kitchen that has children, my wife and myself wandering about in.

As I say, I don't mind compromising a little on quality, but I'd need a bigger capacity than the aero, better foam - much less dense so it can actually be poured out of the unit without needing scooping out!
