The people you meet while travelling are not the average people. The average American never travels to another state, let alone to other continents... Same is true for many people in many countries: Asians visiting Europe are top % of population in wealth and brains. German homes are relatively okay insulated. Very remote: burn wood or some sort of wood pellet stuff. Not clean, but it is local and renewable. Less remote: heat pumps, runs on electricity. Cities: many are planning/extending heat nets, those can be partially powered by left over heat from industry. And import nuclear electricity from France in winter I guess!

- don't "recycle" an old microSD with osmc or some other system still on it. Start from scratch.
In fact, I bought a new SD card. 32 GB costs a ridiculous 7 €. It's worth not taking the risk with some old one that's possibly been flashed many times before. I'm quite sure some blocks on the one i was using previous were corrupted.

don't use raspbian, osmc, debian, ... Use DIETPI. Possibly raspbian lite. It's the absolute minimal system you can get, with a focus on home-servering whatever you want on a rpi. This is the way. It's disabling sending power to whatever is on there that you'll never be using anyhow. Including the option to fully disable local hdmi output, absolutely no local audio-out support, etc. Squeezing all these little ones for sure pays off on a rpi 3 or older.

video streaming works fine! Better than local video playing used to be with the osmc/kodi install years ago on the exact same pi. Mkv HVEC H264 at 4.4 Mbps with AC3 sound 384 Kbps: plays smooth in browser. Sure, it's not what you want if you're doing the ultrahd 4K i don't know what, but is good enough for me.

invest in the silly cooling accessories. It is worth it. Putting a tiny deskfan on the pi within a minute drops temperature 15-20 °C, while libraryscanning + videostreaming... Glue the cooling elements (1 € or even less) on the chips, buy the tiny fan or a case with fan built in. It's another 6-12 € that is more than worth it.

stay away from HDD. They eat lots of energy. SSD is worth it. Even if HDD has external power source: they are slow as fuck, takes a while for disks to start spinning. They're still usefull, as back-up. Another reason to go the DIETPI-way: the back-up disk / live disk shit is easy peasy built in there! No messing around searching how to set that up. Same with (auto-)mounting drives in general by the way.

The only downside so far: the Nordvpn-meshnet approach for remote access was a bit more annoying. It's not integrated in the dietpi-vpn (or not yet). So you gotta install nordvpn seperately and make that work.
TL;DR: DIETPI !!!

I'm assuming it will be okay-ish, as long as its 720p or lower and not super compressed and only 1 client connected. Ordered a tiny 3.3V rpi fan, it might help. Or make things worse as it drains some power, who knows.
Used to have kodi on this rpi for a few years, until about 4 years ago. Only local tho, not as server. It struggled hard with playing HVEC. Visibly (annoyingly) lagging. Older filetypes worked very fine.
If it sucks, I can still use it as server remote through vpn, download something, play locally.
Only music jellyfin has somewhat stabilised now. Got 48h without crashing! Think internet connection somehow gets stuck sometimes. Quite certain it's not a RAM, not a temp and not a SSD issue. Gonna put a cron script to regularly check connection, if down to long, reboot. That might "fix" it well enough to be usable longterm, local+remote.
Got it going remote too, can listen to my jellyfin on any network now, with the Nordvpn meshnet it's really easy to set up and presumably that's secure too.
Server is Raspberry pi 3 B with 1TB SSD.
Rpi temp idle is ~49°C, gets to about ~65° when being queried, etc. ~75° during initial library scan
Was a osmc install (which as I understand is a minimalist debian ?), installed jellyfin, disabled mediacenter (kodi) on boot. It's all on home wifi still... Only about 1700 albums of music and audiobooks, no movies no series. Perhaps the wifi chip in rpi isn't good enough?
Is there a way to turn off incremental search? Either Web UI or apps: search seems to send a search instruction to server for every new letter added to the search box. I'ld much rather type a few letters (I usually sort of know what I'm looking for) and then click send or whatever to fetch results only for that. Would improve performance a lot for me
Don’t ever give out your templates or show your process. If they can hire someone less experienced at a much cheaper rate, they eventually will.
I think you're usually legally obligated to. I mean, crappy boss never ask is one thing, but if they inquire how you do your job, which templates you use etc, the employer owns the templates you created during your paid work time on probably the computer which is also the employers property. You don't have to throw every detail about how you do your job on the table yourself if no-one asks, but if they do you should or they'ld win any legal dispute and you could be fired on bad (financial) terms. Likely whatever you show and explain is still to "complicated" anyhow.

I got a gaming laptop for work a few years ago, because appearantly the CPU AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX was about the best thing to be found for updating some ridiculously complicated excel power query circusses at work, according to the internet back then (i think I found that info on pc master race on reddit before the reddit-api-fall), and finding those CPU's in business laptops was rather difficult at the time. They were right, this CPU handled the queries like a walk in the park.
Is the AMD Ryzen 9 6900H* still a very good CPU for this kind of thing, or should I put in a lot more time investigating again, is there better cost-efficiency available now in other CPU?

Just need a CPU that handles this Excel shit as fast as possible, preferably without locking up the entire machine and without being as noisy as an F16 getting ready for lift off. Albums are sometimes uploaded as 1 long video. Those are fun. Often they're uploaded as all songs seperately and then there's a playlist which makes it 'the album'. They used to be okay too.

Hi, First, is it possible to set the steamdeck to "default" to always keep picking the steamdeck speaker as default audio out also when an HDMI is connected through the USB-C? I have an old monitor (VGA to HDMI to USB-C haha) and would be easiest to still just output audio in the steamdeck speaker by default. It is easy to switch audio outputs in desktopmode, not in gaming mode unfortunately can't switch to steamdeck speaker there, doesn't work.
Second, how do y'all combine music and games? I prefer to play games while listening to youtube full albums (freetube or similar) in background. Doesn't really seem to integrate well in gaming mode either? Tried adding Monophony and Freetube as non-steam games, but not very succesful. What's your suggestion for optimizing the setup?

How are urban places (i'm in Belgium) with almost permanent super heavy road traffic congestion, bad climate statistics, high polution values, very limited available space left, no self-sustaining energy production and high traffic accident statistics still pooring in billions and billions in subsidies year after year into "regular" big heavy SUV-like vehicles instead of these? It's beyond my comprehension. The only real valid reason i somewhat get is the collective scare of being in a crash and not wanting to be in the smaller vehicle. We could save the climate, we choose not to.

I've honestly long been waiting for such devices... And wonder why android phones still don't really do that.
Now, regarding the docking station: the official one is quite pricey.
It does not matter at all that the charging of the dock is rated at 60W, which is more than the steam deck needs, right?
Would this thing do the trick? I'l need to connect 1 usb dongle for mouse and keyboard in the usb 2 port, 1 hdmi to screen, 1 usb 3 to external harddisk and then the charging. SD is nice to have, don't really need it. I don't care that the deck will be laying flat on a desk instead of being able to use it standing up as a tiny second screen.

Like, I get comments from people telling me it's weird I always try to peel potatoes like I am trying to make the worlds longest 1-piece potato peel. To me it feels way for efficient and fun to continu down a potato in 1 peel, while circling around it, instead of randomly scraping a hundred different pieces of peel off and having to reintroduce the cutter knife to the potato for every piece.
