collaborative map software?
  • This seems like a possible contender. I'm currently giving it a test now just to see what it's like. I'm fairly new to all this, what do you mean by their geo-stack not being open?

Edit: I'm not sure this one will be able to work after all. I think it probably needs to be mobile focused, and this one seems to want to be used on desktop. I tried uploading a .pdf for a georeferenced map and it just got stuck in the loading process (this could be just because my internet is shit right now). I may give it another try, but for now I might have to keep looking.

  • collaborative map software?

Avenza seems to be the go-to app. It works pretty well and all, but I'm wanting to know if there's any software available that can allow a team of people to simultaneously access and make edits/notes to a geo-referenced map. It also need to have kind of the same base functionality of being able to show your current location and all that. Ideally it should be designed for mobile first, but being able to access it from desktop too would be a plus.

So, just for one example, I could add a placemarker on the map, and any of my team members who are also accessing that map will be able to see (in real time) the placemarker that I just made. Does this type of feature exist?

  • I've got to say, a lot of your responses seem like you are pre-convinced that there isn't any solution to your problem. I think that's why you've been getting so much snark/pushback. (Are you looking for genuine help, or just needing to vent? Either way, it's ok. Separating the two might be beneficial to you though, that's all I'm saying here)

Did you read Schmorp's full story, or just the one link I sent? I know it's not step by step instructions, but if you're serious about organizing something I feel like there are a lot of good tips you could pick up on from the way that they did/are doing things.

Do you have any libraries you could frequent? Many of the unknowns you have could be addressed at a library and I think they would have much more relevant answers pertaining to your locality.

Also, here's a link to something that I just saw here, that seemed like it could be potentially relevant/useful: https://mobilizon.fr/

  • What are your favourite lesser known websites?
  • I am really happy that you appreciate it. There is so much to explore there, be careful because it's easy to lose a lot of time browsing the files. Lol

I love reading about all the old school hacking and shit. There's some genuine 'anarchist cookbook' type of stuff in there. Probably don't try any of that shit, but it's fun to read about none the less.

Any recommendations? Are any of them usb-c rechargeable? Seems like most of the ones I'm seeing take AAA batteries.

Is there any way to disable the power button popup window? I'd like it to be just an immediate shutdown switch, not have to confirm or wait 60 seconds...

    trouble installing easytether

I tried using the default 'eddy' installer as well as 'gdebi' but both of them throw an error message.

gdebi says "error: dependency is not satisfiable: libssl1.1 (>=1.1.0)

eddy says "installation failed, child process exited with code 100"

Will a virtual machine work for this?

Newbie here. First of all, I successfully took ownership of a folder using the command line and I am proud of that. Even though it ended up being irrelevant for the problem in the end, it was still satisfying to be able to figure it out finally. Using the command line makes me feel like I'm doing cool stuff B)

So, I was doing some digging, trying to get my mouse to work properly, and I ended up finding out some things. Hopefully this saves somebody some time/frustration in the future.

-Logitech's software doesn't work in Linux (of course)

-Piper doesn't work for this model (g502x PLUS) yet.

    Bummer.

There is a workaround, however. This model actually includes on-board memory! Sweet, my money was not wasted after all!

So, I just went back to windows (gross) and set up the profile I had been using previously. (sidenote, who TF uses forward and back for the side buttons? It obviously should be ctrl and shift for the defaults, respectively...) When I got back on my new setup, it was a success!!! It works perfectly well, and no issues so far.

Now, for the main question, is there any easy way to set this up from Linux by using a windows virtual machine or something similar?

    Thanks for reading.

Hey just wanted to ask for some recommendations on tethering my phone to my laptop. Would be nice to have options to hide tether usage if possible. Thanks

    Looking for recommendations

So, I've been considering micromobility options recently to help me get out a little bit more and range better. My dog told me he'd appreciate it if I got out a little more on my off-days. I don't know why he's gotta be so judgy like that...

    Anyways,

-Bike formats are out, it needs to be easier to transport and not take up that much space.

-Balance boards are cool, but I'm not sure that's quite what I'm looking for either...

Electric skateboards, scooters, mountainboards, etc., what's good? I'm drawn to the idea of electric boards with (potentially?) off-road capabilities. I'm a mountainbiker and often have access to excellent trails, so I like the thought of being able to ride on those too sometimes but my main uses would probably just be getting around town or going out on paved greenways.

Entry level would be good, I'm hoping for somewhere in the 500-1000 dollar range if it exists but if I have to pay more for something better then so be it.

Also, DIY solutions aren't completely out of the question for me. I could see myself messing around with a build project if it strikes my fancy.

Thanks for any help, I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

Laptop opinions? (considering Asus TUF lineup)

I'm currently on an MSI GF65 Thin 9SEXR. It has a 9th gen core i5, 8GB RAM, and a geforce rtx2060 graphics card. While it's been a great daily driver for several years now, it's definitely starting to show it's age with newer games and such.

I've currently got my eyes on the ASUS TUF series of laptops, because they seem like pretty decent quality. The chassis design seems more intuitive with where the ports are located, and other small details that make ease of use a priority. I like that it has a numberpad as well, and I'd consider this one of my necessities going forward.

My main uses will be moderate gaming, 3D design, and general browsing/productivity. I'd also like to dump windows for Linux as well, but I'm not entirely sure that I'm ready to make that jump yet. I've got very minimal experience with alternative operating systems to windows.

I don't know much about AMD's hardware, so I'm not sure how the designations compare to what I currently have. If anyone could give me an easy rundown to get me up to date I'd appreciate it too.

is anyone familiar with the 'destructables' website?

~~It looks like they've got a ton of cool projects on the website, but whenever I try to go to any of them it just gives a 404 error.

Just wondering if anyone's run into to this or knows what's going on with it.~~

This was just an error on my part. I forgot that I'd installed libredirect, and the 'destructables' website is just a frontend for instructables.com

suggestions on securing a fold out shelf

I've recently built a fold out shelf, to dual purpose as a headboard, and I'd like to be able to secure it in the upright position (I think. I'd also consider the down position if it's better somehow) for stability when moving. It's in a camper trailer, so there doesn't need to be any room for movement when it is secured.

Here are some pictures so that you can see better what I'm working with:

    vertical position

    horizontal position

It is brought out from the wall, so that the window blinds and the top piece on the window blinds are accounted for. It sits against the top piece nicely, but I just wanted to mention this detail because any wall-mounted solution would also likely need to be spaced out from the wall.

I was thinking some type of latch system would probably be the best. Alternatively, I also kind of like the idea of an arm or kickstand type piece that could be mounted to the base piece on the counter and the underside of the shelf, possibly with dowels or something?

Let me know what you guys think.

How viable is torrenting on a public connection?

My options for internet connectivity are very limited. I was wondering if I could go to a library or coffee shop or wherever has a good connection and do all my downloading remotely, or if I will run into problems/restrictions.

I'm thinking they may not allow VPN's or something like that?

    auditory overstimulation (when shopping)

Hey, I'm interested in tips/recommendations for improving my shopping experience when going into stores that have loud music playing. I don't want to be unaware of my surroundings by not being able to hear at all, but the obnoxious levels to which many stores blast their (objectionably atrocious) music (as well as other loud/constant noise that is happening) is almost unbearable to me and really makes me not be able to think straight when I'm in the store. I've got my own task list and agenda, and when I can't think about things clearly it really slows down my whole process.

I'm wondering if any of those decibel reducer ear plugs would be a viable option? I feel like I've seen those recommended a few times.

I've experimented by wearing noise cancelling earbuds before, which kind of worked, but this presented some level of unawareness that I didn't like and also seems kind of rude in a way? There's got to be a better solution.

    Thanks for reading.

    Fuck Ubisoft.

I was pretty hyped for the new prince of persia game (the lost crown), but come to find out it's only available on ubisoft's proprietary launcher or epic games. Nope, and nope.

I just want to have it available on my usual storefront, Steam, but it's been decidedly omitted. As a long time fan of the old games, this kind of hurts. Especially since many of the others -are- available on Steam.

I wonder if/when it will come out for Steam. These platform exclusivity deals need to die.

Edit: It's also available on several consoles, my post was just from a pc gamer's perspective.

    speaker recommendations

Hi, I'd like to lament a little bit here and see if you all would like to make some suggestions for me too. I've have consistently encountered different issues through 3 different speakers that I've tried using with my laptop

The first one is a JBL flip 6. When I have it connected to my laptop it makes consistent audio glitches/stuttering (so much so to the point where I consider it unusable). This is really disappointing because I have been really happy with this speaker, it otherwise strikes an excellent balance of battery life, portability, sound quality/volume, and versatility. I don't know what causes this problem (which seems to be exclusive to being connected to my laptop) and otherwise have zero complaints about it.

The next speaker I tried is a Marshall Kilburn II. I really enjoyed the sound quality of this speaker, looks, portability, the controls were all pretty good, and it had a 3.5mm audio input jack as well, so this was going to (hopefully) alleviate any potential bluetooth woes. Well, Marshall did a stupid design choice and implemented an automatic standby mode. This mode was so persistent that I would have to use the button repeatedly in order to get sound to come out of it. In-between watching videos, or playing games, having to repeatedly press the function button on the speaker to get the audio source to switch back to the aux input was a real annoyance and immersion breaker...

The third, and current speaker to have become a failure for me is the razer leviathan v2x. This one is a usb-c powered speaker, with bluetooth as well. It is not being recognized as an audio device by my laptop when I plug it in. It seems to have pretty excellent bluetooth connection, which would be fine except for the RGB lighting is reactive by default to whatever audio is being played. It's setup in a visualizer kind of way, which in my opinion is way too distracting. I don't want this thing erratically flashing quickly and with many different colors when I'm trying to watch something, or listen to something. It's extremely distracting and immersion-breaking. I would be ok with it if there was a way to turn this off, or make it less erratic, but because the speaker isn't being recognized by my laptop, there's no way to control the speaker's lighting using razer's software which also doesn't recognize the speaker (bluetooth or usb-c connected). I called Razer support to troubleshoot, and was recommended to take it back to the store for a replacement. If it so happens that this was a factory defect, and the replacement operated correctly, I'd probably be happy with a new one.

Thanks for reading all of that, if you managed to get that far.
