oh my god I went back to FB a few months ago just to see how bad it is.
So the algorithm is real good at picking up on what you like, and it'll do that quickly, but slowly the propaganda starts seeping in.
For example, I like Taylor Swift. Don't hide that here or there. So, she starts popping up. At first fun fan pages.
Then, all of a sudden I get a weird one, that she's actually conservative. Check a few days later, I see another, she's endorsing trump. (Definitiely did not).And now, without even interacting with the posts, half of them are conservative focused propaganda. It's all 100% BS of course, it's just AI generated images and text, but holy fuck do those morons eat it up. Not just Swift, but everything there is 100% a propaganda machine. They 100% lure you in with things you like, then they turn up the rage after a bit to keep you engaged and stuck there.
Place is a cesspool. Stay away from FB. Remember, family doesn't let family stay on FB.
Twitter is also turning into the same thing.
It tracks literally everything you do online, regardless of any precautions you take, including not even having an account. But it's not good at determining what you like, or it would have taken the hint the first 20 times I told it that I don't want to see pictures of Sylvester Stalone and his family. What I like is seeing posts from my friends and family, but it'll show me literally anything except for that. BYE!
The Taylor Swift for Trump campaign is insane. I don't get how people are falling for it. On one hand the ai images are very obvious and on the other in no world would Taylor Swift ever support trump.

My mother keeps sending stuff over Facebook, my sister keeps inviting me to supposedly important events over Facebook, my work wants me to use twitter, and my brother in law keeps sending tiktock videos.
I remind all of them that I don't use social media, and my Facebook account is only up for the 2 times a year I need it to get ahold of otherwise-unreachable people. If you want something, send me a text or email and be direct.
Lemmy is good, because there's less AI drivel. But that's currently changing. =.=

On the one hand I don't like the amount of toxicity and political views. On the other hand it makes Lemmy unviable for AI training
True, once I filtered out all posts that mention political topics and blocked people that posted political posts, my feed became a ghost feed. Some days I might get multiple new posts but other times there might be nothing new for weeks.
And that's a bad thing? It seems healthy not to have content continually served to you.
I like it here. People are quite nice for the most part

I am convinced that few Lenny user experiences are the same — and that’s a good thing. I stand by the meme for the simple reason when I post to Lenny I’m not putting money into the pocket of anyone.
I guess that’s the biggest draw for me.
And that I feel users here, whether they agree with one another or whether they might be toxic, they are at least thoughtful and attempt to support their claims with reason and evidence.
And I never feel used at Lemmy the way I have on FB ETC.
That's true. There is more genuine discussion on Lemmy than on any other platform. Facebook is completely devoid of anything meaningful these days, and reddit isn't too far behind for everything except niche communities. Unfortunately Lemmy doesn't have enough people or content for me to just stick to my niche communities like I do on Reddit, so I see a whole lot more doomerism, and political outrage here, despite my extensive block list.
If this is meant to say that Lemmy is a cult-like social media, I kinda have to agree. Like Reddit and Twitter are, but only different in that people on Lemmy are more likely to be obsessed with Linux and be trans compared to the other platforms.
Lemmy still has the same "group think" or "hive mind" problem, its just different. More politically left compared to Reddit, which is still politically left but its not so far from center like Lemmy is. Like, Lemmy users have been observed telling people who are politically left that they "arent politically left enough." Who says that, why is that even a thing to argue over?
Would you like to see more right wing political takes? For me I look at the current American right wing snd I don't think any views expressed would be allowed on this platform. Not because this platform has strict rules but because their views are so unhinged and bigoted.
No, I would like to ideally see no political takes. Neutral comments that don't inject politics into topics they don't belong in. Left or right I don't care, I don't want to see either of them.
But I do agree that basically no right wing views are allowed on Lemmy. Not even some left wing views are allowed because they're "not left enough." While I was blocking communities related to politics, one was called something like "conservative" (I dont remember the instance) and it was obviously the victim of targeted vote brigading. Every single post and comment that was not making fun of the OP or calling politically right people "hateful bigots" or Nazis or whatever other buzzword names politically left people use now for politically right people, every single one was sitting at like -200 or more downvotes which was more than the number of people active in the community.
In my opinion, that's a problem, because vote brigading is a Reddit thing and Lemmy was supposed to be better than Reddit. But as it turns out, its the same. Its the same as Reddit, if not worse because of the way its users treat people that don't have exactly the same thinking as they do. I'm sick of the tribalism that Lemmy was described as not having.
